    One man in custody

Ottawa police say there is one man in police custody, though police aren?t confirming whether he?s been arrested, my colleague Jessica Glenza reports. Police are looking for more suspects.

?There are numerous buildings that are on lockdown for safety reasons. There are police in all vicinities where suspects were seen running to,? said Ottawa Police Constable Chuck Benoit. He won?t confirm the man is a suspect.

?We don?t have an active shooter scene right now, but we don?t have everyone that we?re looking for,? said Ottawa Police Constable Chuck Benoit.

Jessica adds that the Royal Mounted Canadian Police, the military and Ottawa Police are on scene.

They're now say there have been three shootings, one at the Parliament building, one at the war memorial, and one at Rideau Centre. I'll link it when I find one. I'm watching it on cbc.

A third shooting took place in Ottawa, Canada on Wednesday morning at the Rideau Centre.

The first two shooting situations happened at Parliament Hill and War Memorial.

It appears that the shots exchanged in or near the Rideau Centre may have been between police officers and a shooting suspect.

At least one suspect has already been shot dead.

I personally would be surprised if it was ISIS, but who knows.

Canadian police kill 'radicalised' man who rammed soldiers in Quebec

A Canadian man killed by police on Monday after trying to run over two soldiers in Quebec “had become radicalised,” the government said after the first such incident in Canada since the country joined the fight against Islamic State.

The Canadian government did not specify what it meant by radicalised but in the past has used the term to refer to Canadians who become supporters of militant Islamist groups.

Canadian media, citing police, identified the driver as Martin Couture-Rouleau, a resident of the town of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, near Montreal. A neighbour, speaking on condition that her name not be used, told Reuters the man became radicalised about a year ago after getting involved with extremists.

Quebec police shot and killed the 25-year-old driver after a chase following the incident. One of the two soldiers who was run over had life-threatening injuries. Police did not say whether the soldiers were in uniform.

“The individual who struck the two [Canadian armed forces] members with his car is known to federal authorities, including the Integrated National Security Enforcement Team,” said a statement from the Canadian prime minister Stephen Harper’s office.

“Federal authorities have confirmed that there are clear indications that the individual had become radicalised.”

The incident took place in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, about 25 miles (40km) south-east of Montreal.

After the collision the driver sped off and was chased by police. He lost control of the car, which landed in a ditch. He was shot after confronting officers, police said.

Earlier in the day Randy Hoback, a member of parliament for the ruling Conservative party, referred in the House of Commons to unconfirmed reports of “a possible terror attack against two members of the Canadian armed forces”.

At the time Harper said the reports were “extremely troubling” but declined to give more details.

A spokesman for the Surete du Quebec, the provincial police, pressed as to whether the victims had been specifically targeted, said that was one of several hypotheses but stressed it would take the police days to work out what had happened.

Canada is sending six fighter jets to take part in the US-led campaign against Isis militants in Iraq.

Canadian security officials have been concerned for years about the potential threat of radicalised young men, especially those traveling abroad to join militant groups including Isis in Iraq and Syria. There was no immediate indication Rouleau had travelled abroad.

Ray Boisvert, former assistant director for intelligence at the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) spy agency, said he suspected Rouleau was a lone actor who would have been difficult for authorities to stop. “It reflects what’s going on in a very active threat environment. You have far too many targets and far too many active targets,” Boisvert said.

The head of CSIS said on 9 October that “we have no information indicating an imminent attack”. But Jeff Yaworski, deputy director of operations at CSIS, on on Monday said the agency was worried about the threat posed by those returning to Canada “after having engaged in threat-related activities” abroad.

“CSIS remains concerned that [Islamic State’s] message and successful social media strategy could inspire radicalised individuals to undertake attacks here in Canada,” he told the Senate’s national defence committee.

On 9 October the Canadian public safety minister, Stephen Blaney, said police wanted to arrest 80 people who returned to the country after taking part in what he called suspected terrorism-related activities. A report issued by his ministry at the same time said “global violent extremists” had identified Canada as a target.

Gunman in Ottawa attack identified as Michael Zehaf-Bibeau

    Read more: http://www.ctvnews.ca/canada/gunman-...#ixzz3GuctyLvL

The suspect in Wednesday?s attack on Parliament Hill is Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, a Canadian citizen born in 1982, CTV News has confirmed.
The suspect was gunned down Wednesday morning, following shootings at Ottawa?s National War Memorial and inside Parliament.

Cpl. Nathan Frank Cirillo, a soldier standing guard at the war memorial, was fatally shot. Kevin Vickers, the sergeant-at-arms for the House of Commons, later shot the gunman in the main entrance of the Centre Block.
Parliament Hill and Ottawa?s downtown core remain under lockdown, but police are not saying if other suspects are on the loose.
Ottawa Police Chief Charles Bordeleau said residents need to stay ?vigilant? and report any suspicious activity to police. But he did not directly answer questions from reporters about the possibility that another shooter ? or shooters ? were still at large.
Earlier Wednesday, Ottawa police Const. Marc Soucy said officers believe there may be more than one assailant. He said that police will be assuming that any other assailants are armed.
Boderleau said police received multiple 911 calls around 9:52 a.m. Wednesday about a shooting at the National War Memorial.
A gunman then entered Parliament, where dozens of shots rang out. The gunman was killed, but Bordeleau and the RCMP would not confirm that the same person was responsible for both the war memorial and Parliament shootings.
As the chaos unfolded, Prime Minister Stephen Harper?s director of communications tweeted that Harper was safe.
Several MPs also took to Twitter to say that they were safe. Several described what they had heard, and many said they were in hiding.
Witnesses reported seeing a masked man with long hair and a rifle running towards Parliament Hill.
Tony Zobl, 35, told The Canadian Press that he witnessed Cirillo being gunned down from his fourth-floor office window directly above the war memorial.
"I looked out the window and saw a shooter, a man dressed all in black with a kerchief over his nose and mouth and something over his head as well, holding a rifle and shooting an honour guard in front of the Cenotaph point-blank, twice," Zobl told CP.
"It looked like the honour guard was trying to reach for the barrel of the gun. The honour guard dropped to the ground and the shooter kind of raised his arms in triumph holding the rifle."
Zobl said he then saw the shooter run up the street toward Parliament Hill.
Video captured inside Parliament showed officers filing down the empty corridor of the Hall of Honour as at least a dozen shots could be heard ringing out in the background. A security guard was reported to be injured in the shooting.
?This is a dynamic and unfolding situation,? RCMP Assistant Commissioner Gilles Michaud told a news conference Wednesday afternoon.
He said the attack caught the RCMP by surprise, but would not elaborate.
?If we had known that this was coming, we would have been able to disrupt it,? he said.
The RCMP also said it?s too early to say if the gunman was among the 90 or so suspected extremists being tracked by the Canadian government.
Reports of a third shooting inside the Rideau Centre, a shopping mall near Parliament Hill, turned out to be false, Bordeleau said.
The Ottawa Hospital confirmed in a statement that it received three patients. Two of them are in stable condition.
?Today is a sad and tragic day for our city and our country,? Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson said, adding that everyone is ?looking for answers.?
The RCMP is advising people to stay away from the area, and people in downtown Ottawa are being told to stay away from windows and off of roofs.
The shooting comes two days after a man attacked two Canadian soldiers in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que. One of those soldiers died from his injuries. The suspect was shot and killed by police.
On Tuesday, Canada raised the domestic terror threat level from low to medium.
    Security beefed up
The attack on Parliament Hill immediately prompted officials across the country to heighten security at government buildings, provincial legislatures and military bases.
Soldiers are also being cautioned about wearing their uniforms in public when they?re not on active duty.
The situation in Ottawa has made headlines around the world, prompting world leaders to express their outrage and condolences.
U.S. President Barack Obama spoke with Harper Wednesday and offered ?any assistance? needed in the response to the attack, according to a tweet from the U.S. National Security Council.
Obama also expressed ?the American people?s solidarity with Canada,? according to the NSC.
A statement from NATO?s secretary general also said that ?NATO stands in solidarity with our ally Canada at this difficult time.?

Both Monday's hit and run driver and today's shooter were on Canada's terrorist watch list and had had their passports taken away. They were I e-mail contact with each other.

There is still a large police presence in downtown Ottawa and they say the investigation is ongoing.

Meanwhile, another idiot jumps the fence at the White House and got caught on camera kicking a White House guard dog. He's in custody.

Corporal Nathan Cirillo knew from a young age he wanted a career protecting his community. The 25-year-old joined the cadets in his hometown of Hamilton as a young adolescent, and as soon as he was old enough, enlisted with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders ? a tight-knit reserve regiment of about 200 soldiers known simply as the ?Argylls.?

It was this dream ? working in the army, with an eye toward a career as a border guard ? that brought the young father to Ottawa, where he was shot and killed Wednesday in an attack that has sent shockwaves across the country.

In a terrible twist of timing for the young soldier, who recently trained for the better part of a year in Petawawa, Ont., Cpl. Cirillo was fulfilling a short rotation with a one-month maximum as a guard at the war memorial. In fact, the position was created only seven years ago, after a string of vandalism attempts.

The National War Memorial, which includes the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, honours Canadians who died for their country, and is the nation?s central gathering place on Remembrance Day.

?He was a wonderful young man. Not an enemy in the world,? said Cpl. Cirillo?s aunt, who asked that her name be withheld.

She said she didn?t focus on the news reports Wednesday morning, not realizing her nephew was in Ottawa. It was only when she saw closeup footage of the body laying near the Ottawa War Memorial ? where he had been stationed ? that she realized it was him.

?When I saw the ambulance take him in and I saw his receding hairline, I knew it was my nephew,? she said.

Standing in the doorway of her Hamilton home, Mr. Cirillo?s aunt gave a small, defeated sigh when another resident informed her that police had released the name of the suspected shooter, Michael Zehaf-Bibeau. ?A terrorist attack,? she said. ?In our own country.?

Mr. Cirillo leaves behind a 6-year-old son, and spent almost all of his spare time with his family, and working out, she said. ?He was into being fit. And being a father and a son.?

He was also an animal lover. Through his Instagram account, Mr. Cirillo chronicles how he recently rescued an abandoned puppy. He found the young German shepherd-mix just over a month ago, ?extremely skinny? and ?shivering over an empty can of dog food,? according to the account.

After nursing the dog back to health ? including recruiting a veterinarian to neuter the animal and update his shots for free ? he found a family to adopt him.

?Found him a pretty home, hope he has a good life,? Mr. Cirillo wrote four weeks ago.

He also posted many grinning photos of himself in his military gear, referring to his colleagues in the Argylls as his ?family.?

Colonel Geordie Elms, a former commanding officer of the Argylls, said that his ?heart just fell? when he saw the regiment?s distinctive gold leopard badge ? referred to as the ?cat badge? ? on the fallen soldier on television broadcasts. ?That could only be one unit,? he said he thought at the time.

Because the role is considered a ceremonial, albeit prestigious one, he said, Mr. Cirillo?s gun likely would not have been loaded.

?He was not responsible for protecting the memorial ? the RCMP, the Ottawa police would?ve still been responsible for that,? he said.

Hamilton Mayor Bob Bratina said he visited with Mr. Cirillo?s family ? including his two sisters ? at their east-end home on Wednesday.

?It was very sad,? he said. ?We had some hugs and tears.? He described Mr. Cirillo?s family as a ?typical Hamilton family ? beautiful home, clean as a whip, pictures of Nathan and his two sisters on the wall.? He said they had recounted how excited he was to be a part of the army.

?He was so proud of it,? he said, ?and looked really great wearing the Argylls kit.?

Gunman and Victim Identified in Ottawa Shooting

    By Olivia Crellin
    October 22, 2014 | 6:15 pm

One of the two people killed in the shootout in Ottawa this morning has been identified by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) as Nathan Cirillo, a 24-year old Canadian soldier from Hamilton.

Ottawa police had confirmed at a press conference earlier this afternoon that two people died in the incidents early today, but did not identify either, only saying that a soldier had been killed and "a male suspect has also been confirmed deceased."

US officials later told CBS News the name of the dead Ottawa shooting suspect is Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, a Canadian born in 1982.

Multiple 911 calls were received by police at 9:52am, who told reporters that they were not in a position to confirm the timing or sequence of events after that.

A video shared by a reporter for the Globe and Mail shows officers engaging in the shootout inside the Parliament building this morning. There are no details of the gunman's injuries, but reports indicate that Cirillo died at a hospital after standers-by tried to resuscitate him on Parliament Hill.

The video shows officers walking slowly through Parliament with their weapons drawn. A gunshot is heard, followed by the sounds of a series of shots ringing out.

The police also confirmed that no shooting incident occurred near the Rideau Center, although they had previously said otherwise.

Bob Zimmer, a member of the nation's Parliament, first tweeted Wednesday that a "lone gunman is deceased" before police confirmed the death.

Reports of further shootings followed that tweet, and police told people to keep away from windows due to the "ongoing police incident." The Parliament building remained on lockdown as investigators sought out other possible assailants. Authorities told reporters today that Parliament Hill has been at a "medium" security status for several years, and remains at that status following today's events.

Const. Marc Soucy of Ottawa police said Wednesday morning, "As to the number of suspects, we don't know."

The information that no shooting incidents took place after the shootout on Parliament Hill supports a lone gunman theory. Media outlets and law enforcement today were considering a multiple gunman theory with possible terrorist connections. For now, the number of shooters at the scene remains unclear. Ottawa police have asked the public to stay away from the downtown area.

In addition to the soldier killed guarding the memorial, a security guard was also wounded, the Toronto Star reported.

Another video, by Canadian broadcaster CBC, showed medics performing CPR on one of the men wounded by the War Memorial.

Mayor Jim Watson gave a brief statement today on the shooting, saying "Today is a sad and tragic day for our city and our country" but ""I will not let that anger rule the day. We all want answers."

Today's incident comes a day after a recent convert to Islam was shot and killed in St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, by authorities after he killed one soldier and injured another in a hit-and-run. Martin Couture-Rouleau, the man who attacked the soldiers, was being investigated by Canadian authorities.

Cpl. Nathan Cirillo laid to rest in hometown Hamilton

Hamilton, Ont. to pay their final respects to fallen soldier Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, who was gunned down last week as he stood guard in Ottawa.

Cirillo?s coffin, carried atop a gun carriage to Christ?s Church Cathedral, was accompanied by members of his regiment as well as scores of soldiers and police officers marching to the sounds of muffled drums.

Lots of pics at link, could someone post a couple please?
