The trial has started.
BTW- His whole twitter is now religious.
MMA fighter War Machine told his porn star ex-girlfriend he would have to kill her as he stood over her helpless body and beat her for two hours, a Las Vegas court heard.
In Monday's opening statements of the trial for War Machine the court heard how the fighter threatened to murder his former flame Christy Mack, as he mercilessly attacked the adult actress.
The brutal assault began when War Machine, whose birth name is Jonathan Paul Koppenhaver, burst into a bedroom and found Mack in bed with another man in August of 2014.
After allegedly pummeling her new lover, War Machine turned his anger on Mack, leaving her with a broken nose, missing teeth, fractured eye socket, leg injuries and a lacerated liver.
The 35-year-old is on trial for 34 felony charges against him, including kidnapping, attempted murder and multiple counts of sexual assault, all of which he pleaded not guilty.
Prosecutors began casting the former mixed martial arts fighter as violent in his relationship with the porn star and murderous when he found her asleep with another man in her bedroom.
In a rage, he had stood over Mack during the beating and told her 'This is it. I?ve got to kill you now', reported the Las Vegas Review Journal.
The day's main testimony was from Corey Thomas, the man who was in bed with Mack when the alleged assault took place.
He told the court he thought he was going to die in the 12 minute battle with War Machine, where he was bitten and put in a choke hold by the expert fighter.
According to NEWS3LV, Thomas said: 'He bit me there on the cheek and I could feel the bite.
'And once it registered I was getting bitten, then I put my hands back up to try to break him off my face and then he hit me on the arm
'I'm looking up at the ceiling thinking to myself "I'm going to die in Christy's bathroom. That's not how I'm going out."'
Thomas said Mack's horrific injuries were the 'the saddest [he] ever saw, reported Adam Herbets for Fox 5 Vegas.
Thomas added: 'When I was in hospital, Christy was in the room right next to me. Her eyes looked like they were peppered shut. Teeth gone.'
War Machine, who said he would go by Koppenhaver in court, had a quiet defense attorney in Jay Leiderman.
Leiderman didn't deny during opening statements that a fight took place on that early August morning.
But he characterized Mack and Koppenhaver as 'two damaged people' - each with an adopted public name, deep image insecurities and a co-dependent relationship that revolved around sex, constant attention and internet personas that exploded into violence.
'It was a co-dependency that was bound to erupt at some time,' Leiderman told the state court jury during opening statements in a trial expected to last a couple of weeks.
If found guilty, Koppenhaver could get life in prison without parole.
'The two of them were swallowed up by the personas they had created for themselves,' Leiderman said.
They met as performers on an adult film shoot. Koppenhaver legally changed his name to War Machine during his 19-fight MMA career, and he started a clothing line he called Alpha Male.
She had shortened her given name, Christine Mackinday, for her adult film career. She cheered ringside at his martial arts bouts. He became jealous of her professional sexual encounters.
The Associated Press usually doesn't identify alleged victims of sexual assault, but Mack gave the AP permission to use her name. She is expected to testify during the trial.
Among their many tattoos, he has her name, 'Mack,' tattooed in large letters across his throat. She had 'Property of War Machine' inked in red on the back of her right shoulder.
Prosecutor Jacqueline Bluth told jurors that Mack liked to be choked during sex, sometimes to unconsciousness. Leiderman said Mack had rape fantasies, and invited Koppenhaver to surprise her.
Thomas, a digital media company owner who is both taller and heavier than Koppenhaver, testified Monday that he dated Mack for two months before Koppenhaver arrived unexpectedly, flipped on the bedroom lights and set upon him on the bed with rapid-fire punches and chokes that nearly left Thomas unconscious.
High school wrestling experience and a couple of years of unarmed defense training helped Thomas escape, he said, along with the presence of mind to ask Koppenhaver whether he was going to kill him or let him leave.
Thomas testified that he ended up with a broken nose, dislocated shoulder, scrapes and bruises, and bite marks on his face and arm. Koppenhaver let him go with a warning that if he went to the police, Koppenhaver would enlist friends who are Navy SEALs and Hells Angels bikers to hurt him, Thomas said.
Mack testified in 2014 that after Thomas left, Koppenhaver attacked her - leaving her with a broken nose, missing teeth, fractured eye socket, leg injuries and a lacerated liver.
She has said she drifted in and out of consciousness as she was beaten, kicked and groped sexually. She said she escaped when she thought Koppenhaver was in the kitchen fetching a knife to finish her off. She ran naked and bleeding to neighbors' homes.
If found guilty, Koppenhaver could get life in prison without parole
If found guilty, Koppenhaver could get life in prison without parole
Koppenhaver, now 35, was arrested in the Los Angeles suburb of Simi Valley a week after the alleged attack in Las Vegas.
He has been in Nevada state custody since that time, serving 1? to four years in prison after his probation was revoked for a prior conviction in a 2009 attempted battery causing substantial bodily harm case involving a 21-year-old woman.
Koppenhaver made his Ultimate Fighting Championship debut in 2007, and he had a 14-5 record as a welterweight. His final fight was in 2013.
He was dropped by his fight promoter and his clothing line after Mack's accusations became public.
He told a judge in 2014 that he would use the name Koppenhaver in court.

I'm not really sure why all the articles keep harping on her appearance in court?
I would think most people dress conservatively when they go to court.
While testifying in court, a former porn star said she sent her mixed martial arts ex-boyfriend a topless photo of herself just before he allegedly brutally attacked her and another man inside her home.
Christy Mack took the stand for a second day in a row Thursday to testify during War Machine's attempted murder and sexual assault trial in Las Vegas.
Mack said that she sent him a photo of her topless in a text message right before he stormed into her house in August 2014.
'I need that,' War Machine replied to her message
'It's all yours,' the 25-year-old replied to the one-time MMA fighter.
While testifying earlier int he day, she broke down in tears at several points while she explained the extensive injuries she suffered during the alleged altercation between her and War Machine, whose birth name is Jonathan Paul Koppenhaver.
Prosecutors said the incident was the culmination of violent abuse over 15 months that nearly killed the former porn star and Corey Thomas, the man who also was beat during the attack as he was in bed with her at the time.
Mack testified in court that War Machine fractured her left eye, shattered two teeth, fractured two ribs and broke her nose in several placed during the alleged violent incident.
'There's no way I could physically overpower him,' Mack testified.
During her testimony, Mack added that the former MMA fighter repeatedly kicked one of her legs, leaving it horrifically bruised.
'I was limping for probably two weeks afterwards,' she testified.
During cross-examination, Mack testified that she was forced to undergo cosmetic surgeries to repair damage to her lips, as well as other surgeries to her nose and teeth.
While testifying on Wednesday, Mack appeared to have undergone a dramatic transformation.
Mack, who has previously flaunted her arm, neck and face tattoos, along with her colorful hair, went for a more conservative look when she appeared at the Regional Justice Center in Las Vegas on Wednesday.
The 25-year-old wore a high-necked Victorian-style blouse with a blazer, and was sporting a blonde bob and heavy yet subdued makeup which covered up her ink.
The Las Vegas trial has previously heard that War Machine told his porn star ex-girlfriend he would have to kill her as he stood over her helpless body and beat her for two hours.
Mack, whose real name is Christine Mackinday, described to the courts on Wednesday how the violence in their relationship had escalated and sometimes ended in her being choked into unconsciousness.
'At first they weren't that frequent — maybe once a month — but as our relationship progressed, the violence progressed,' she said at the Las Vegas trial, according to the New York Post.
She said she became too scared to report the abuse because her ex threatened to get his former Hells Angels friends to hurt her and her family.
'He said he would send his Navy SEAL friends or Hells Angel's after me or my family,' Mackinday said, adding that she heard him on the phone giving them her and her mom's addresses.

Not all the articles. Just the Daily Mail, whose headline also implies she 'deserved' or 'instigated' what she got. It's an ultra right wing conservative news porn mag and that article is fucking disgusting. Even the commenters who are usually just as gross were like WTF Daily Mail.
Maybe so, Bowie.
I usually use it because it gives a quick rundown on the stuff, with links and pictures.
Anyway, here's the local news report
http://www.reviewjournal.com/crime/c...ls-war-machineErin Mackinday stared at the man accused of beating and raping her daughter.
She had witnessed abuse Christine Mackinday suffered at the hands of mixed martial arts fighter War Machine, but did not talk to police about it until after a particularly vicious attack in August 2014, she told jurors.
A prosecutor asked whether the mother regretted not contacting police sooner.
“No,” she said, her eyes focused on the defendant. “I wish I would have shot you.”
The 35-year-old War Machine, also known as Jonathan Koppenhaver, faces 34 counts in connection with the attack on Christine Mackinday and Corey Thomas, who was in her home at the time.
Christine Mackinday, a former adult film actress who used the stage name Christy Mack, spent two days last week testifying about her life with Koppenhaver, the repeated abuse she endured and the hourslong attack that led to his arrest.
Her mother spent 45 minutes on the witness stand, occasionally stern and sometimes sobbing, as one of the prosecution’s final witnesses in the trial, which resumes Tuesday afternoon.
She would glance fiercely at the defendant when she spoke of “a couple of times” she had witnessed him become physically violent with her daughter, who became isolated throughout her relationship with him.
“You could see her independence slip away,” she testified.
War Machine had sent Erin Mackinday text messages within hours of the early morning attack on Aug. 8, 2014, urging her to go to the central valley home where her daughter lived to “check on her.”
“There was a huge fight when I came in,” he told the mother. “The guy she was in bed with came at me.”
Christine Mackinday and Thomas have testified that they were asleep when he burst into the home.
Her mother said she immediately called War Machine’s cellphone.
“We got into a fight,” she recalled him telling her. “I had to beat her up.”
She remembered having one thought as she rushed to her daughter’s home: “She’s dead.”
An officer at the scene told her that her daughter was alive at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center.
The mother walked into the hospital room and saw a swollen and bruised face that she barely recognized.
“It didn’t look like her,” she testified.
Her daughter urged her not to cry.
“This is done,” the mother said at the time, referring to Christine Mackinday’s relationship with the since ousted fighter, who is now jailed. “This is done.”
and WTF
http://www.reviewjournal.com/crime/c...chine-midtrialA once-prospective juror in the War Machine rape and attempted murder trial showed up for the second day of testimony on Tuesday, even though she was never selected to hear the case.
She had a “gift” for the defendant.
With a bright smile, the unidentified woman handed a small manila envelope to the marshal for Courtroom 15B.
The defendant, a banished mixed martial arts fighter who had his name legally changed from Jonathan Koppenhaver, is facing life in prison without the possibility of parole on a mountain of charges, including sexual assault, kidnapping and attempted murder.
He is accused of abusing his ex-girlfriend, former adult film actress Christine Mackinday, for months before attacking her and another man inside her home. Prosecutors have alleged that he sexually assaulted Mackinday while brutally beating her in August 2014.
Defense attorneys and prosecutors were perplexed. They approached District Judge Elissa Cadish at the bench and looked inside the envelope. The woman had written a letter and included what appeared to be a handmade blue leather bracelet emblazoned with the word “grace.”
While the letter’s contents were not made public, lawyers said the woman wrote that she was praying for Koppenhaver and asked others to pray for him. Someone she was close with was serving time in prison under similar circumstances, she wrote.
The judge decided that, as a private citizen, the woman should be allowed to write Koppenhaver, who is being held without bail at the Clark County Detention Center. But the package would have to be delivered to him and processed through the jail. It’s unclear whether he would be allowed to wear the jewelry behind bars or during the trial.
Defense attorney Jay Leiderman described the letter as “private thoughts she wanted to share with Jon.” He called it “very sweet.”
Prosecutor Jacqueline Bluth objected to allowing the juror to present Koppenhaver with the package in the middle of the trial. She called the act “absolutely inappropriate.”

The jury now has the case.

LAS VEGAS (AP) - A jury in Las Vegas spent a full day deliberating Friday whether the former mixed martial arts fighter named War Machine is guilty of charges that could get him life in prison in an attack on his porn star ex-girlfriend and her male friend in August 2014.
Jonathan Paul Koppenhaver could face life in prison if he's found guilty of the top charges of attempted murder, kidnapping and sexual assault in the violence that jurors were told left Christy Mack and Corey Thomas bloodied and injured.
But those are just some of the 34 charges the state court jury is considering.
Koppenhaver's defense attorney took the unusual step Thursday of conceding Koppenhaver's guilt on eight domestic battery charges for punching and injuring Mack and using a knife.
It enrages me that they keep having to say 'porn star' in front of her name to IMPLY something.
Guilty of 29 counts

A Las Vegas jury found former MMA fighter War Machine (born Jon Koppenhaver) guilty today on 29 charges for when he brutally beat ex-girlfriend Christy Mack and her male friend Corey Thomas back in 2014. The jury deliberated for a day and a half before finding War Machine guilty of most of the charges, including battery constituting domestic violence, sexual assault, and preventing a victim from reporting a crime. Jurors declared a mistrial on the charges of attempted murder and attempted murder with a deadly weapon.
Also it was a mistrial for attempted murder so that can be retried if he somehow gets a lighter sentence.
War Machine tweeted for the first time since being convicted on 29 counts on March 28. He posted on Tuesday:
'Well, that didn't go very well, now did it? Would you believe me, though, if I said that I have nothing but joy inside, even now as I am sure to receive some type of life sentence? It's true. Often times I have heard men in neighboring cells go to their cells and cry after receiving such news, but how can I? How can I cry tears of sorrow over the circumstances responsible for saving my soul?'
These circumstances are what has transformed me into a real man, how can I disrespect god by weeping over them? How much is a soul worth? Is a life sentence too high a price? Not at all, I gladly trade this false life in for the real one to come; I have been nothing but blessed by all of this. Now, if only I could somehow receive Christy's forgiveness... And if only I could one day hear that she too had been saved! That would remove every last bit of tarnish from this tragedy.'
'CHRISTY: I am sorry for the man that I was, I am sorry for hurting you. One day, when enough time has passed, and when your wounds are fully healed, I hope that you will write to me, or, perhaps, even visit me, so that I can apologize completely, and so that I can tell you about all that I have found in regard to god. He is real and can heal and complete you deep inside, if only you knew the full extent to which he had healed me... I will never cease to pray for you.'
'MELISSA & SHANNAH: You have been the best sisters a guy could ever ask for, I love you two so much.'
'BRANDON: You have gone far above and beyond the call of duty as a friend, I'm still in awe of all you have done.'
'STACI: Thank you for your service to god, without you I may never have been found.'
'PHIL: Thank you for your presence at court, sorry for failing you as a protege.
'HERMAN: Sorry for failing you as a mentor, you have grown into a good man, I am proud of you.'
'JULIA: You have been a true gift from god, if only... And to the rest of my loved ones: Never worry about me, I am at peace, I am alive and happy for the first time in my life.'

(Don't usually use the "g" word but in this case it seems kind of appropriate)
