They talked of Courtney Aoki's flair for the theatrical, of her compassion, of the way she grabbed life with both hands.
But there was an underlying frustration that they could not save Aoki, 20, from her own inability to see evil.
"She was not for this world," said her boyfriend, David Gutierrez, at Aoki's memorial service Saturday. "That's where she messed up. She didn't see the negative in the world."
And, perhaps, that's how a 20-year-old gunman got the drop on her to begin a Feb. 19 killing and carjacking spree that claimed four lives, including the shooter. Aoki was found dead in the Ladera Ranch bedroom of gunman Ali Sayed about 4:45 a.m. Investigators have not announced what Aoki was doing there.
Gutierrez, 21, said Aoki dealt with "shady" people to finance her dream of becoming an actress
His eyes rimmed in red, Gutierrez said Aoki was two months pregnant with his child, a belief that the coroner has not yet confirmed.
"Now I don't have any direction in my life," he said, before breaking down in the tiny Cerritos Baptist Church.
Aoki's mother, Annette, in a pamphlet handed out at the memorial, tried to understand how her bright, happy and cheerful daughter, adopted as an infant, ended up a victim of violent crime.
"I always wanted Courtney to be safe and thought that I could protect her from everything," Annette Aoki wrote. "However, when she
wanted to do something, as a 20-year-old would, there was no stopping her. All I could do was to provide a prayer that she would be safe."
Friends said that Courtney, herself, was the answer to their prayers.
Rachael Taulbee, 19, talked of being in a "bad place" when Courtney came to her rescue.
"She did everything she could to help me," Taulbee said. "I didn't go hungry. She gave me her help and she told me things would get better. She didn't have a mean bone in her body."
The group of about 150 remembered Courtney Aoki as a voracious reader, who loved horror novels and pop culture. She would dress up as Lady Gaga or the Black Swan, using her inventiveness and makeup to recast herself.
Rich Stein, who taught Aoki at a theatrical program provided by the Orange County Department of Education, said she graduated with almost 100 more credits than she needed, most of them for theater classes.
"She was always of rarefied air," Stein said.
The memorial had a Hawaiian flair, with hula dancers performing behind a portrait of Aoki. Celebrants wore Aloha garb.
"We can't dwell on the sadness," Annette Aoki wrote. "Instead we should focus on how happy she made us when she was in our lives."
The Rev. Gary Tawa added that no one should die the way Courtney did.
But, said Tawa, "death doesn't have the last word."

I support sex workers in so much as I think they need to be protected and have proper access to health and legal services but do I think what they're doing is not 90% of the time really depressing and disgusting? and emmie: i posted this thread because i heard about it on the radio yesterday. i'm leaning towards the theory that it's not a serial killer because there are suspects being investigated in all but one of the actual murders...
what got me so about this story is that it does show that these sex workers are in danger. perhaps people are becoming more violent in general and these girls seem like easy targets or expendable people?
the people that are most vocal about this situation are an anti-trafficking group and to me, anti-trafficking advocates are dicks. i mean... they spend all their time and money labeling all sex workers as trafficked/exploited people and honestly couldn't give a fuck about the domestic and farm workers.
what makes giving a 5 minute blow job any more deplorable than cleaning skidmarks out of some rich assholes underware for 10 hours a day?
these killings are being framed as a human trafficking issue when in fact, the families and friends of these people all knew about their work as escorts. maybe the one girl jarrae had been trafficked, since i guess she had come from the mid-west and had been staying at a trafficking shelter, but then again, maybe she came of her own accord and stayed there because it was available and she wanted to change.

anyways. all this shows me is that sex workers need to be legal and registered and work in places that afford security. people can say that they are victims and that they have been trafficked as much as they want, but at the same time, all these advocates are doing is making their jobs harder and more dangerous then ever.

You should really spend some time at the mental hospitals and prisons in Los Angeles and tell those women that their whoring is just like being a housekeeper. I don't think they'd feel the same way. They are exploited and they are victims and no one who is a street whore is a healthy, happy person. The idea is to create help and support. And the notion that serial assaults against them is new? No. Or more common? No. Actually, we're now lucky that these dreaaaadful anti-trafficking groups you're complaining about who are looking into rescuing women forced into prostitution by sex crime rings or by coyotes who snuck them into the country are doing such a passionate job keeping track of people and making them COUNT as people instead of somehow thinking that being a whore is a good or fun or reasonable job.
i'm sorry, bowie... it's not like i WANT to argue whores with you, buuuuuuut. i've known my share of whores. i've talked with a lot of them. i have been in the LA jails among the whores, and yes on the dreadful psych ward, and i have found that a lot of them would like to see prostitution legalized because it would give them a voice. it would give them options. many of them think that the trafficking policies should differentiate between exploitative sex trafficking and choice.
you may not think it's a choice for some of them, but it is. some people think that working 12 to 15 hour days as a household slave is a much less desirable and profitable position than is selling your body for a few hours a night.
these anti-trafficking groups are at the forefront of keeping prostitution illegal. that are with the anti-pornographers and the moral america coalitions. i am not denying that there are some women and men brought into the country and forced into the sex industry, but it is my position that it is a separate issue than prostitution. sex trafficking is human trafficking. prostitution is not.
most whores are normal people with normal wants and needs. sometimes they have issues that prevent them from seeking what many would consider 'normal' employment. sometimes they have addictions, sometimes they have mental illnesses. sometimes, they have a police record...
