Man allegedly exposed himself to teen girls, pleads not guilty to child annoyance, molestation charges
VICTORVILLE — A 26-year-old Victorville man who pleaded not guilty Thursday to six counts of child annoyance and molestation charges after allegedly exposing himself to, and masturbating in front of, several teenage girls, is also believed to be connected to two assaults at Victor Valley College and another at a furniture store on Amargosa Road that occurred earlier this year, according to authorities.
San Bernardino County Sheriff's officials said in a Thursday news release that David Vargas was arrested Tuesday after allegedly approaching seven teenage girls and exposing himself to them over the past six months. He also reportedly masturbated in front of four of them, according to authorities.
Sgt. Dave Burgess said Thursday evening that he was "pretty confident" Vargas is the same man suspected of two separate assaults at Victor Valley College and a third attack in front of Ashley Furniture in January. That suspect has remained at large since January.
Sheriff's discovered Vargas was potentially responsible for the assaults after searching his vehicle. He was involved in a traffic collision at the intersection of Seneca and Hesperia roads Tuesday, according to Burgess. Sheriff's deputies found suspicious license plates in his trunk that did not belong to the vehicle, he said.
Vargas' first incident of indecent exposure, not involved with his suspected January attacks, reportedly occurred on Sept. 4 when Sheriff's officials said Vargas approached a 17-year-old girl who was walking to school near La Mesa Road and Stanford Driver and asked her for directions to the mall. Authorities say Vargas proceeded to pull down his pants and masturbate in front of the teenager.
Vargas allegedly followed similar tactics with several of his next few victims, reportedly asking for directions to the mall before exposing himself and masturbating. Authorities said that between Jan. 7 and March 16, Vargas approached at least six girls in the areas of Arvill and Princeton drives, and Mesa Linda Avenue and Dos Palmas Road. The girls ranged in age from 13 to 15 years old.
Vargas would reportedly approach the teens in his car and follow them after they would try to walk away. He was seen driving a 2001 white Chevrolet Malibu and later a 1996 black Nissan Maxima, according to the release.
Vargas is being held at the High Desert Detention Center on multiple counts of annoying and molesting children with a prior conviction, and is being held in lieu of $350,000.
San Bernardino County Court records show he could be facing prison time if found guilty of the six counts of annoying and molesting children.
Sheriff's officials believe that Vargas committed similar acts that have not been reported.
