Library of Congress to store Twitter postings

If you think your tweets go off into nev­er-nev­er land af­ter you fire them off via Twitter, think again.
The Library of Congress has entered into a deal with Twitter, the social networking website, that
calls for the fed­eral agency to archive ev­ery public tweet ev­er sent, Fed­eralNewsRa­dio.com is reporting.
The tweets will be held by the library's repos­itory of histor­ical doc­u­ments, the news agency reports.
The repos­itory will not include tweets that Twitter users have de­clared pro­tected, or private, but will include all else.
"We have an agree­ment with Twitter where they have a bunch of servers with their historic archive of tweets, ev­ery­thing that was sent out and de­clared to be public," Bill Lefurgy, dig­ital initiatives program man­ag­er at the library's dig­ital information infras­truc­ture and preservation program, told Fed­eralNewsRa­dio.com.
The archive con­tains "billions and billions of tweets" and is "a unique record of our time," he said.

Oh wow. I don't know if my twitter was part of that or not. I just know I tried to log in after almost a year of not using it - just to keep up with the Jodi trial. And I started following some media people. And whoever took my twitter started telling me to stop it and to STFU. I finally disabled that account and made a new one since changing my PW didn't help

Donald Trump's Twitter Account Gets 'Seriously Hacked' (PHOTOS)

Donald Trump is not enthused.

It seemed like a regular Thursday for Trump as he tweeted his usual outbursts, like warning Republicans to "be careful with immigration" so as not to "give our country away," until some Lil Wayne lyrics were posted to his account.

Trump then tweeted that his account had not just been hacked, it had been "seriously hacked," and he was looking for the culprits.

Internet speeds around the world have noticeably slowed down due to a massive "distributed denial of service" attack, reports the BBC.

These DDoS attacks bombard targeted web servers with so much dummy traffic that people trying to access a site for legitimate purposes are unable to do so. It's most analogous to a traffic jam on a highway with no one able to move.

The BBC says that security experts are describing it as "the biggest cyber-attack in history."

The attacks were focused on a company called Spamhaus, which maintains a "domain name system" to connect a typed-in URL to the correct server hosting the appropriate content. With this company's services compromised, large portions of the web became less stable.

A Dutch web host called Cyberbunker states that it will host anything except child pornography or terrorism-related content. Spamhaus blocked Cyberbunker's servers in an effort to weed out any spammers that might host their content with the company.

Now Spamhaus is alleging that Cyberbunker is collaborating with a Russian and Eastern European criminal organizations to facilitate the attacks.

A DDoS attack of 50 gigabits per second is usually enough to take out a major bank. Spamhaus is seeing sustained attacks of 300 gigabits per second. It's only because of its distributed structure helping to effectively reduce the load that it's still operational.

A fake tweet with terror overtones caused financial markets to gyrate wildly for a few minutes this afternoon, the latest reminder of how technical snafus and terrorism fears can still move markets in a heartbeat.

The Dow Jones industrial average was cruising along Tuesday, up more than 150 points, before briefly plunging and then rebounding around 1:07 p.m. EST after a fake tweet on the Associated Press' Twitter site reported that two bombs had gone off at the White House and injured President Barack Obama.

The Dow dropped nearly 143 points in a three-minute span from 1:07 p.m. ET to 1:10 p.m. ET. It plunged from 14,698.25 to 14,555.96 in that short span. But the Dow had regained all of its losses by 1:17 p.m. ET, once the AP noted on its website that its Twitter account had been hacked and that the report was untrue. The White House also confirmed that the tweet was a hoax.
