I rode my bike to the grocery store (2 miles away) for my mom all the time when I was 6 and stayed by myself all the time. We were all in a different mindset then. Now everyone bubble wraps the kids. I think maybe somewhere in the middle would be better.

My mother did not let me or my brother out of her site. We were driven to and from school by her or a trusted friend because she worked full time. At home, we had to stay in our own yard when outside and have our friends come over to play. She was very, very, very protective to say the least.

From 7 years old my husband came home from school and let himself in and stayed by himself until late at night when his mother got home from work. My mom was at home, but she definitely took a very laissez faire attitude with what we did.

I'm not sure we can let you have your Gen-X status anymore. Your upbringing is the odd one during that time period. Go look at the Gen X Reddit forums. The rest of us were allowed to roam free and do pretty much what we wanted.

Oh, when I got little older (like 12 or so), my mom did not care at all about what we were doing. I mean, whatsoever. My brother and I once had a picnic on the roof of our house and put a blow up swimming pool there. We were all the envy of the neighborhood kids. She also allowed us to try pot and hash brought over by one of her friends.

But in the younger days, it was a lot.

On June 24, 2002, 19-year-old Brookley Louks visited her father's apartment in Greenwood, Indiana, to pick up some clothes. Upon arriving, she discovered his personal computer had been stolen and called the police, who completed a report and left around 5:30 p.m.

Shortly after, a witness reportedly saw Brookley get into the passenger side of her 1990 Chevrolet Corsica, which may have been driven by an unidentified young man. Later that evening, she told her mother she was spending the night at a friend's house, but she was never heard from again. Her car was later found abandoned on July 1 in Waverly, Indiana.

Investigators quickly focused on a primary suspect named Joseph Nowicki, a local man with an extensive, violent criminal history (including past convictions for murder, rape, and robbery) whom Brookley knew. Nowicki was reportedly infatuated with Brookley and grew upset when she spent time with other teenagers instead of him. Police searched Nowicki's workshop and found blood. Although there wasn't enough blood to prove a homicide, DNA testing confirmed it belonged to Brookley. Nowicki was arrested on unrelated weapons charges following the search of his home. In July 2003, he was released to a hospice due to terminal cancer and died on August 29, 2003, without ever cooperating with police or facing murder charges.
Brookley’s father, Scott Louks, was never named a suspect, but police believed he was withholding information. He was granted immunity in July 2002 but later stopped cooperating with detectives. Scott died of natural causes in November 2002, taking any secrets he might have known with him.

In 2013 and 2019, police searched a remote property near Paragon, Indiana, for Brookley's remains. During the 2019 search, cadaver dogs and excavation revealed human adipocere (a wax-like substance formed during decomposition) and bone fragments. While some material was destroyed or too degraded for immediate DNA testing, police continue to hold remaining fragments in hopes of future technological advances.

Brookley's case remains officially unsolved, though she is presumed dead and investigators believe she was the victim of foul play.

That drives me nuts when the people who most likely had info, die. Like, if I ever kill someone, I promise I will put that secret in a safe or something, to be opened upon my death

I know. They literally take their secrets to the grave with them.

The disappearance of the Sarah Joe is interesting.

On February 11, 1979, five friends, Benjamin Kalama (38), Scott Moorman (27), Patrick Woessner (26), Peter Hanchett (31), and Ralph Malaiakini (27) set out on a fishing trip on the Sarah Joe off the coast of Maui, Hawaii.

A sudden, severe storm struck the area. The crew sent a final radio message indicating their engine had died before vanishing.

The U.S. Coast Guard, military, and local volunteers searched over 56,000 square miles of ocean, but found no trace of the Sarah Joe or crew.

Nine years later, in September 1988, marine biologist John Naughton discovered the Sarah Joe wrecked on Sibylla Island in the Marshall Islands, which is more than 2,000 miles from Maui.
Near the wreckage, investigators found a shallow grave marked with a handmade driftwood cross. Dental records confirmed the remains belonged to crew member Scott Moorman. No trace of the other four men was ever recovered.

Wind and currents plausibly explain how the boat drifted to the Marshall Islands, but Moorman's burial remains unexplained.

The deliberate nature of the grave led investigators to suspect that passing, unrecorded visitors (such as illegal foreign fishermen) found and buried his remains without notifying authorities.

It remains unknown whether any crew members survived the initial drift, how long Moorman lived, or what became of the remaining four fishermen.

That's super interesting. My first thought was they made it to the island and buried their friend who died. It seems more likely for friends to do that versus random strangers. But then what happened t the rest?

Right. We know at least one of them remained on the boat, but whether they were alive or dead, who knows.

We were pretty much free roaming as kids until there were murders near us. The Alphabet Murders. After that we were tethered to an adult if we went anywhere off our tiny street and that applied to all the kiddos.

The disappearance of Megan Elizabeth Garner:

    https://www.missingkids.org/poster/NCMC/752334/1

    https://charleyproject.org/case/megan-elizabeth-garner
Megan was last seen in a playground fifty or sixty feet from her family's home at Casa Grande Apartments in the 4600 block of South Paluxy Drive in Tyler, Texas on March 27, 1991 between 11:15 and 11:20 a.m. She was accompanied by her six-year-old brother and two cousins, aged eight and four.

Twice during the morning, Megan returned home for raisins, water and to use the bathroom. She was last seen by a fence that separated Casa Grande Apartments from duplexes and another set of apartments to the north, near the entrance to a laundromat. She had been instructed to never cross the street alone.

Between 11:15 and 11:20, the other children left the playground to go home for a drink of water. Megan apparently decided to stay at the playground. When they arrived home, Megan's mother asked where she saw and the children said they thought she was upstairs. Megan's mother told them to go get her. The children returned at 11:30 and said they couldn't find her. The family searched for her for about an hour before notifying police.

That is scary. It could have been anyone that took her...someone from one of the apartment complexes, laundromat, or just someone randomly walking by.

Terrence Shemel Woods Jr. (26) disappeared on October 5, 2018, in Idaho County, Idaho, while working as a production assistant for a British television documentary titled Whitewater.

Woods was in the area of the Pinman Mine, near the ghost town of Orogrande, filming a documentary on abandoned gold mines.

His coworkers reported that he began acting strangely before suddenly running into the woods. At one point, his coworkers observed him running at the bottom of a cliff they had been searching, but he did not return and was not located.

While he was scheduled to work on the production until mid-November, he texted his parents just days before his disappearance to tell them he was cutting his trip short and would be home on October 10.

His loved ones noted that this was uncharacteristic of him. His mother has suggested that he may have been afraid of someone he was working with on the production crew.

    The disappearance of Craig Frear:

    https://charleyproject.org/case/craig-allen-frear

Craig was last seen at approximately 2:00 p.m. on June 27, 2004, near the Cambridge Manor apartment complex in Scotia, New York. He had visited a friend in the complex and was afterward seen walking into the woods nearby.

He said he was going to his parents' house, which was located in a cul-de-sac on Yorkshire Court, but never arrived there and never returned to the apartment complex. Craig left his car in the complex's parking lot. He has never been heard from again. He wasn't carrying his cellular phone at the time he went missing.
The day of his disappearance, his family found out he'd lost his job at the Price Chopper supermarket, a position he'd held for about two months. He had been pretending to work there for weeks after his termination so his parents wouldn't know he was no longer employed.

Authorities don't believe Craig died by suicide or left of his own accord. His loved ones and the police believe he came to harm, but the circumstances surrounding his disappearance are unclear.
Based on the circumstances I would lean towards the idea of suicide, but LE saying no and thinking he didn't leave of his own accord puzzles me.

    Timothy Molnar's case:

    https://mshort.substack.com/p/the-mi...-disappearance

    https://unsolvedmysteries.fandom.com/wiki/Tim_Molnar

Nineteen-year-old Tim Molnar was an aeronautical mechanics student studying at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida. On the morning of January 24, 1984, he left his home to go to class and never returned. The last person to see him was his fourteen-year-old brother, Frank, who he dropped off at school. Some believe that he was a victim of foul play, but others, including his family, believe that he ran away to start a new life.
The night after Tim vanished, his family received a phone call. When they picked up the phone, there was no voice on the line - only static. They believe that he may have been trying to call home but got nervous and hung up. Two weeks after he vanished, his family learned that on the day of his disappearance, he stopped at a gas station in Lake City, Florida, and paid for a tank of gas with his parents' credit card. His family was told by the gas station attendant that he was traveling alone. Four months later, they received a letter from an auto impound company in Atlanta, Georgia, which stated that he had left his car in a parking lot six days after he initially vanished. The lot was just one block away from the Greyhound bus terminal.
Tim's family found his driver's license, wallet, credit card, and other items in his car suggesting that he had changed his identity. They also found that several expensive items from the car were missing, including a stereo, his expensive tool set, and a bicycle. They are uncertain whether he chose to disappear or if something else happened to him. For some reason, he took no clothes with him other than the ones he was wearing. However, just before leaving, he took out nearly all of the money from his savings account. Interestingly, he left $10 in it, possibly a way of saying that he may return one day.
When the case re-aired on January 31, 1996, a viewer named Steven Cull called the telecenter. He recognized Tim's clothes as the ones he had found on a body frozen in ice in a secluded wood lot in Neosho, Wisconsin, ten years earlier. After he contacted the medical examiner, they contacted Tim's family and received DNA samples. Through DNA testing, the body was confirmed to be his in November. Keys found with it were determined to match the locks on the Molnar home.
Despite the identification, the cause of Tim's death could not be determined (there were no signs of trauma), nor could anyone determine how or why he traveled all the way to Wisconsin.

Given he took no clothes with him, but the body was found in the clothes he was wearing is strange. The viewer indicated he had recognized the clothes on a body he saw 10 years earlier (presumably in 1986). Either he died shortly after he arrived in Wisconsin or he continued wearing the same clothes for a couple of years.

Yeah, I thought the whole thing was odd and I had never heard of it before today, so that's why I shared it. My guess is he was dead the whole time, but still I am not sure why he went there.
