Per Reddit, she lived only 1.5 blocks from her school. At first I was wondering why a six year old was allowed to walk home alone.

I rode my bike to the grocery store (2 miles away) for my mom all the time when I was 6 and stayed by myself all the time. We were all in a different mindset then. Now everyone bubble wraps the kids. I think maybe somewhere in the middle would be better.

My mother did not let me or my brother out of her site. We were driven to and from school by her or a trusted friend because she worked full time. At home, we had to stay in our own yard when outside and have our friends come over to play. She was very, very, very protective to say the least.

From 7 years old my husband came home from school and let himself in and stayed by himself until late at night when his mother got home from work. My mom was at home, but she definitely took a very laissez faire attitude with what we did.

That is a lot for someone that young. Wow.

I'm not sure we can let you have your Gen-X status anymore. Your upbringing is the odd one during that time period. Go look at the Gen X Reddit forums. The rest of us were allowed to roam free and do pretty much what we wanted.

Oh, when I got little older (like 12 or so), my mom did not care at all about what we were doing. I mean, whatsoever. My brother and I once had a picnic on the roof of our house and put a blow up swimming pool there. We were all the envy of the neighborhood kids. She also allowed us to try pot and hash brought over by one of her friends.

But in the younger days, it was a lot.
