I rode my bike to the grocery store (2 miles away) for my mom all the time when I was 6 and stayed by myself all the time. We were all in a different mindset then. Now everyone bubble wraps the kids. I think maybe somewhere in the middle would be better.

My mother did not let me or my brother out of her site. We were driven to and from school by her or a trusted friend because she worked full time. At home, we had to stay in our own yard when outside and have our friends come over to play. She was very, very, very protective to say the least.

From 7 years old my husband came home from school and let himself in and stayed by himself until late at night when his mother got home from work. My mom was at home, but she definitely took a very laissez faire attitude with what we did.

That is a lot for someone that young. Wow.

I'm not sure we can let you have your Gen-X status anymore. Your upbringing is the odd one during that time period. Go look at the Gen X Reddit forums. The rest of us were allowed to roam free and do pretty much what we wanted.

Oh, when I got little older (like 12 or so), my mom did not care at all about what we were doing. I mean, whatsoever. My brother and I once had a picnic on the roof of our house and put a blow up swimming pool there. We were all the envy of the neighborhood kids. She also allowed us to try pot and hash brought over by one of her friends.

But in the younger days, it was a lot.

On June 24, 2002, 19-year-old Brookley Louks visited her father's apartment in Greenwood, Indiana, to pick up some clothes. Upon arriving, she discovered his personal computer had been stolen and called the police, who completed a report and left around 5:30 p.m.

Shortly after, a witness reportedly saw Brookley get into the passenger side of her 1990 Chevrolet Corsica, which may have been driven by an unidentified young man. Later that evening, she told her mother she was spending the night at a friend's house, but she was never heard from again. Her car was later found abandoned on July 1 in Waverly, Indiana.

Investigators quickly focused on a primary suspect named Joseph Nowicki, a local man with an extensive, violent criminal history (including past convictions for murder, rape, and robbery) whom Brookley knew. Nowicki was reportedly infatuated with Brookley and grew upset when she spent time with other teenagers instead of him. Police searched Nowicki's workshop and found blood. Although there wasn't enough blood to prove a homicide, DNA testing confirmed it belonged to Brookley. Nowicki was arrested on unrelated weapons charges following the search of his home. In July 2003, he was released to a hospice due to terminal cancer and died on August 29, 2003, without ever cooperating with police or facing murder charges.
Brookley’s father, Scott Louks, was never named a suspect, but police believed he was withholding information. He was granted immunity in July 2002 but later stopped cooperating with detectives. Scott died of natural causes in November 2002, taking any secrets he might have known with him.

In 2013 and 2019, police searched a remote property near Paragon, Indiana, for Brookley's remains. During the 2019 search, cadaver dogs and excavation revealed human adipocere (a wax-like substance formed during decomposition) and bone fragments. While some material was destroyed or too degraded for immediate DNA testing, police continue to hold remaining fragments in hopes of future technological advances.

Brookley's case remains officially unsolved, though she is presumed dead and investigators believe she was the victim of foul play.

That drives me nuts when the people who most likely had info, die. Like, if I ever kill someone, I promise I will put that secret in a safe or something, to be opened upon my death

I know. They literally take their secrets to the grave with them.

The disappearance of the Sarah Joe is interesting.

On February 11, 1979, five friends, Benjamin Kalama (38), Scott Moorman (27), Patrick Woessner (26), Peter Hanchett (31), and Ralph Malaiakini (27) set out on a fishing trip on the Sarah Joe off the coast of Maui, Hawaii.

A sudden, severe storm struck the area. The crew sent a final radio message indicating their engine had died before vanishing.

The U.S. Coast Guard, military, and local volunteers searched over 56,000 square miles of ocean, but found no trace of the Sarah Joe or crew.

Nine years later, in September 1988, marine biologist John Naughton discovered the Sarah Joe wrecked on Sibylla Island in the Marshall Islands, which is more than 2,000 miles from Maui.
Near the wreckage, investigators found a shallow grave marked with a handmade driftwood cross. Dental records confirmed the remains belonged to crew member Scott Moorman. No trace of the other four men was ever recovered.

Wind and currents plausibly explain how the boat drifted to the Marshall Islands, but Moorman's burial remains unexplained.

The deliberate nature of the grave led investigators to suspect that passing, unrecorded visitors (such as illegal foreign fishermen) found and buried his remains without notifying authorities.

It remains unknown whether any crew members survived the initial drift, how long Moorman lived, or what became of the remaining four fishermen.

That's super interesting. My first thought was they made it to the island and buried their friend who died. It seems more likely for friends to do that versus random strangers. But then what happened t the rest?

Right. We know at least one of them remained on the boat, but whether they were alive or dead, who knows.
