Georgia mayor fires entire police force after they upset his wife

The mayor of a small Georgia town has axed its entire police force for upsetting his wife, who’d previously been accused of creating a “hostile work environment.”

Cohutta Mayor Ron Shinnick shut down the Cohutta Police Department and fired all 10 of its employees earlier this week after officers allegedly made “inappropriate comments” about his spouse on Facebook, WDEF reported.

“The PD has been dissolved, and all personnel have been terminated,” read a brutal sign on the department’s door first thing Wednesday.

“They’ll get a paycheck. We’re not that way, and I appreciate their service, okay? It is time for a change,” Shinnick said bluntly when asked about the controversy.
The petty saga erupted late last month when several officers lodged formal complaints about the town’s former clerk, Pam Shinnick — who is also the mayor’s wife — continuing to work for the town despite having been fired.

She was terminated last year for apparently creating a “hostile work environment” in the town of less than 1,000 people — but allegedly still had access to personal and classified information.

“This all comes to personal vendetta from the mayor — and I wholeheartedly believe that,” said one of the axed officers, Sgt. Jeremy May, adding that they’d been assured their jobs weren’t in jeopardy for lodging complaints about the mayor’s wife.

The mayor, for his part, blamed the conflict on “inappropriate comments” posted on Facebook by the officers.

Those officers are going to be able to sue for big bucks. Usually LE is union protected too.

Right. There are mentions on FB that they will likely get rid of the mayor and reinstate the officers.

I missed this from last month.

The mayor of a small town in the US state of Georgia has resigned shortly after firing his community’s entire police department, a step that the local governing council ultimately reversed.

In a 15 May resignation letter, Ron Shinnick avoided mentioning his attempted termination of the Cohutta police department, word of which gained international media attention.
The letter instead said Shinnick had opted to vacate the mayoral post he had held since 2014 due to “health concerns” faced by family members outside Cohutta.

“This decision was not made lightly,” Shinnick wrote in his resignation letter, to which he assigned immediate effect. “But I believe it is in the best interest of both the town and myself at this time.”

The health concern is that he's out of his mind! Don't let the door hit you in the ass, Ron!

People in power being petty and juvenile seems to be an unfortunate trend these days.

Was the wife using the officer's personal information to harass/intimidate/black mail them?
