I didn't know where to put this post, is there a section where you just talk about deaths in general but with no links to articles or obituaries?
Anyway, I see Diabetic Ketoacidosis show up for a lot of younger people on ME Reports. Some of these same people had friends and/or relatives die of Drug OD's.
Makes me think some of these younger Diabetic Ketoacidosis cases were caused by heavy drugs, but the ME only listed Diabetic Ketoacidosis as the reason.
DK can most certainly be triggered by drug/alcohol use, but can also be caused by illness, stress, etc.
Right, and also if the diabetic is overweight or just not taking care of themself may also factor.
Oh I looked up an old one and they changed cause of death later from "diabetic ketoacidosis" to:
Acute cocaine and fentanyl toxicity complicating diabetic ketoacidosis

Seems like most of the drug OD deaths mention fentanyl along with whatever other drug(s) on the toxicology report. I heard it was around 2011-2013 that fentanyl deaths started showing up mixed with other drugs. I am wondering why it started then and not earlier like in the 80's or 90's. Do you think it had to due with the cost of fentanyl? Or maybe it is because no one ever thought to add fentanyl to their drugs till the 2010's? Then when one person started the rest copied.
I hear fentanyl is pretty much added to everything nowadays and heard it might even be added to weed.
These people dont even know they are taking fentanyl (despite this being well known in the news) and when they take 2 different drugs together like meth and cocaine, each drug has their own variant of fentanyl added and the person then takes too much fentanyl without realizing.
It's terrifying, you can't trust ANYTHING off the streets, even weed. I think it started when it did simply because people didn't know it was an option. What I don't get its, why would you kill off your clients? It's bad for business!

Fentanyl is very cheap to make. Somewhere along the line some brilliant druggie decided to mix it so they did not have to use so much of a more expensive drug.
What gets me is Fentanyl is such an important drug for cancer patients and those with terminal illnesses.
I wonder if they are only focused on the drug they are adding fentanyl to and not even thinking that the person they sell this to will be taking other drugs that also have fentanyl added in.
Right, when I watch hospital related shows they often say "give the patient fentanyl" and it makes me think of all these deaths from the one abusing fentanyl

It could be caused by a variety of reasons. It is essentially unintended weight loss, lack of appetite, poor nutritional intake, etc. It can be common in elderly patients or patients with multiple chronic conditions.
I notice that when the ME Report has no cause of death listed for awhile, it often turns out to be related to drugs, especially fentanyl. Sometimes it takes 2 to 3 months to be update the cause of death when it is an OD.
Why does it take that long? The dug OD related tests the ME's do really take months?
It is because toxicology can be a variety of specimens being tested. It also depends upon a manual process to verify results when it comes to COD.
Exactly what BWS mentioned. They can pretty much have all of the facts in place that they KNOW that's how they died, but Medical Examiners cannot legally conclude anything until the full toxicology comes back from the labs and that usually takes anywhere between 6-8 weeks. With the amount of ODs and unattended deaths, it's really no surprise that it takes that long because just about anyone that dies these days gets one. Even if it's a car accident and they know that the person died from blunt force trauma, they'll have to determine if they were under the influence etc.

Why do some deaths not show up on the County's site? I have seen many people who lived in that county and some hinted they died in the same county (died at home) but their name does not show on the County's ME site
I don't know how it works with Texas, but the Los Angeles County Coroner will remove the names of individuals if the family requests that they not be publicly listed. It could be due to that or maybe even due to dying in hospital and not being sent to the coroner. That's what I think it would be, at least.

Agree with Boston. Families can request to have them publicly removed and/or the deceased was not taken to ME.
Why do you think the deceased would not be taken to ME? I thought nowadays everyone gets an autopsy unless their religion forbids it due to so many situations in the past where an autopsy was not done because they were "sure" it was a heart attack only for them to have to exhume the body years later to confirm that this person was poisoned
ME across the country have different criteria they follow when it comes to examinations. If a natural death occurs and/or a death was verified by a physician, it will not go to the ME for further investigation because it is not necessary. Suspicious, accidental, or violent deaths fall under ME jurisdiction.
Watcher - just curious, how old are you? Also, have you recently lost someone? Or is it just curiosity?

I have not lost anyone. I have been watching all these drug related deaths for years now. I do know some of these people that had died of OD's since I either went to school with them or worked with them. I "knew" of them, but was not close to any of these people. Some of the people you guys had previously made "article" posts on for this forum over the years, I knew them and am not surprised of the results.
I am noticing that many of the people who did drugs in school have since died of drug OD's or have official causes of death that can be related to years of drug use. Same with some members of their family and some of their friends. Even some of their parents. Looks like a never ending cycle with fentanyl showing up the most.
Addiction is a life long battle.

No worries, does not bother me at all. These were some of the most terrible people to exist actually. Even if they did not do anything directly to me, these people lied, stole money from anyone including family, stole possessions from people and sold or kept for themself, abused women, assaulted people, threatened tons of people. These obituaries that keep saying "heaven gained another angel" are a joke.
