NewsNation has exclusively obtained audio recordings that could tie a now-dead Kentucky judge to a sex-for-favors scandal one week after the suspect, a former sheriff, pleaded not guilty to killing him.

The recordings are from the criminal investigation into a Letcher County deputy sheriff who went to prison earlier this year for rape and sodomy of a female inmate in 2022.

“He does have some videotapes of some stuff in the judge’s chambers… just with girls, sexual and stuff,” said Sabrina Adkins, who has spoken publicly about her claims of former Deputy Sheriff Ben Fields using his position of power to pressure her and other women to have sex in exchange for favorable treatment.
Adkins’ attorney, Ned Pillersdorf, told NewsNation, “it’s like they were running a brothel out of that courtroom.”

Adkins told police she saw one of the videos, which she claims shows the deputy sheriff and “some higher ups” having sex in Mullins’ chambers in exchange for granting the inmates bail to get out of jail.
The investigator in the audio asks Adkins to clarify who she saw in the video.

“I seen Judge Mullins having sex with a girl,” she said.

“Where was it at?” the investigator asked.

“In his office, in the judge’s chambers,” she responded.

This is from January 17, 2025.

Former Letcher County Sheriff Mickey Stines appeared in court via Zoom.

Circuit Court Judge Christopher Cohron, prosecutors and defense attorneys discussed several details in the case.

Prosecutor Jackie Steele said they are still in the process of discovering facts in the case. He said the discovery process should be completed in 4-6 months.
Defense Attorney Jeremy Bartley said they will continue to go through documents presented.

An affidavit of indigency, which is a document showing a person cannot cover court costs, was also filed on Stines’s behalf.

Attorneys discussed the potential for a competency evaluation as well.

I found the FB for the judge's sister; she has various posts about her brother and finding justice: https://www.facebook.com/kim.mullins.bledsoe

"Extreme emotional disturbance" will be a key portion of the legal defense for the former Kentucky sheriff accused of killing a local judge in the Letcher County Courthouse office last year.

Attorney Jeremy Bartley, who's representing former Letcher Sheriff Shawn "Mickey" Stines, filed notice with the court last week that "expert evidence relating to a mental disease or defect or mental condition bearing on the issue of guilt and punishment" will be presented when the case eventually goes to trial.
Bartley said he believes there may be "more evidence that would support a finding that he wasn't criminally responsible" for the shooting. He declined to offer more information at this time as the case progresses.

A motive behind the shooting is still unclear. But during a court hearing last fall, when footage of Stines shooting Mullins was shown, a Kentucky State Police detective said Stines had tried to call his daughter just before the shooting and then attempted to call her using the judge's phone.

So all the stuff that was said before was just BS? Nothing happened with the judge and the Sheriff's daughter.

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, however Stines' attorneys indicated in court filings in March that they intend to launch an insanity defense.

Defense attorney Jeremy Bartley issued a legal filing saying his client's state of mind at the time of the shooting would be key to his upcoming trial.

He said the case will hinge on testimony that Stines gave at a deposition days before the September 2024 shooting. That saw the sheriff answer questions about one of his deputies allegedly sexually assaulting jail inmates.

An accuser in that case claimed that she was forced by a deputy sheriff to have sex in Mullins' chambers for six months in exchange for staying out of jail.

Bartley said Stines feared that backlash from his deposition testimony caused him to fear that his or his family's lives were in danger.

The attorney said Stines' 'mental health' was affected by the perceived threat.

'Ultimately, he was in fear for the safety of his wife and his daughter, and I think what you see there is the result of that,' the defense attorney said.

In an interview with Fox News this week, Bartley added that although Stines tried to call his daughter from Mullins' phone, their phone exchange had nothing to do with any relationship between the judge and the sheriff's daughter.

He added that Stines received a call from his aunt during his interaction with Mullins in his chambers, which was one of the times he brought out his phone.

As he denied rumors of any kind of relationship between Mullins and Stines' daughter, Bartley said his client was experiencing increasing paranoia over the safety of his family at the time, particularly due to the deposition he had just given.

I was kind of on board with the killing hinging on an emotional reaction to knowing his daughter was somehow 'involved' w/ the Judge but now I'm not really sure what the hell the excuse is.

Oh look, someone who enforced the law on others doesn't feel like he should have to face the law.

The former Letcher County sheriff accused of killing a district judge in his chambers last September has moved to have his indictment dismissed.

In new court documents filed Wednesday, Stines' attorneys accuse the prosecution of having an undocumented meeting with the grand jury prior to the former sheriff's indictment.

His attorneys also allege the grand jury had asked for records which the Commonwealth did not provide. They claim the two incidents biased the jury.

Stines' attorneys are requesting a hearing to present evidence to prove the bias and are asking the judge to dismiss the indictment with prejudice, meaning Stines couldn't be tried again.

When this story first surfaced, I gave him the benefit of the doubt, as the speculation that the judge was involved somehow with his minor daughter was out there. Knowing what we know now, he brutally killed the judge and needs to be held accountable.

So here is how this is making sense in my head (not as a justified murder - but just how I am putting pieces together). So Stines (Sheriff pew pew) had to testify in a deposition that at least one deputy sheriff he supervised and trained, was sexually assaulting at least one woman (on multiple occasions) in exchange for keeping her out of jail (why couldn't THAT guy be murdered - ugh).

As a result of probably covering his own ass saying he had no knowledge of what was going on (and I believe both he and the judge knew exactly what was going on because men in power are a gross fucking brotherhood) the deputy sheriff and others in similar positions, were likely threatening Stines' family so he would testify differently (backing them up?).

Judge Smoking in Chambers didn't take Sheriff Pew Pew seriously, nor did he show concern over the threats to Pew Pews family and Sheriff Pew Pew wanted help and judge wouldn't help so Pew Pew lost his mind.

In the end, I think they are actually all bad guys and this was karma.

I am already going to hell so if I am wrong, so be it.

What gets me is he and the judge were really good friends and even had their regular lunch together right before this happened.

The rural Kentucky judge who was allegedly gunned down in his chambers last year by a local sheriff possibly ran a scheme by which he demanded sexual favors from women to get them out of trouble, an accuser claims.

Tya Adams told News Nation she would attend sex parties for District Court Judge Kevin Mullins and his friends in the small rural town of Whitesburg in exchange for money or to get offenders out of trouble.

Adams told NewsNation’s "Banfield" that Mullins had warned her to keep quiet about what was taking place.

She said she felt she couldn’t say no because she feared retribution from the legal system and Child Protective Services would upend her life.

"They would make sure to make you feel as small and degraded and belittled as possible to take your power away," Adams said. "It was consensual. But it was the thing that we were so young, and then they used it against us and to destroy our lives later.

"That was just a given," she added. "And who would believe it anyway? Because the whole town was doing it. Nobody cares. They’re all swingers. It’s all a big party to them. It was just so normal."
Sarah Davis, a former deputy at the Letcher County jail, told the news outlet she had never seen anyone initiating sex, but that the stories she heard were "nasty and sickening."

"Pretty much everybody in the county knows," she said. "But it was confirmed to me after working in the county jail, especially after being invited to a party myself."

She described the lockup as a "brothel" where staffers had sexual encounters with each other and with inmates.

Mullins invited Davis to a sex party once, but she said she declined.

"I was raised better than that," she said.

But the guy was the sheriff. Why not arrest the judge? Something tells me there's more to it and that this was his way of keeping the judge quiet.

I am not familiar with how counties work. Is there only one sheriff? I want to believe this guy took the trash out but it is very possible he was garbage too.

Typically THE sheriff is the top guy in that law enforcement branch, and then he usually has deputies working under him.

This is a rural county in KY and there is only one sheriff for the county (typical for most counties in the country).

Was he really the only officer for the Sheriff's department? Usually, the more rural they are the bigger the Sheriff's office is and the smaller (or they are non-existent) the police department is. I see where the new Sheriff is hiring a deputy, but is that truly his only deputy???

If Stines truly was a one man department, then I side eye this situation even more.

I didn't say he was the only officer. He was the only sheriff in the rural county; there were then deputies under him.
