Hypocrisy abounds! I've been trying to argue that point but to deaf ears. There are people in there intelligent enough to discuss the case but it gets mixed up in a bunch of fuckery, hence you get a bunch of sub-threads that in turn, turn into more fuckery and off-topic shit. Coconut started this thread in my opinion to get away from the "Fry Bitch Fry" comments and to discuss reasons that she might be found not guilty of premeditated murder. None of that means anything anymore now that the verdict was read. If you read back on the thread, almost all, including what we are discussing at this very moment are off-topic posts. Seems we are all guilty of bending the rules at some point. Wouldn't you agree? I am not trying to make waves, I am just saying that sometimes you have to see the forest through the trees. If that analogy doesn't work, then it's the needles in the haystack. Not all posters in that thread are crazy and off-topic posts are not just relegated to the JA thread or it's sub-threads. Carry on! Sorry...just had to vent there for a moment.
I guess it depends on what your point of view is.
I think this case was all about Jodi. And her looks. And the brutality of the killing. Then it became about a confessed killer defendant testifying for 18 days. And sex. And lies. Then it became about experts putting the victim on trial.
And as for Coconuts, he was one of the most popular participants in the big thread.
No, it's not a point of view thing, it's a fact. If her boyfriend were a minority this would have been buried on page 20 of the newspaper, and never hit cable news at any point.
I mean, you can call the Mormon thing minority status, but all that did was make it more exciting for the Nancy Grace types.
No way, this still makes headlines

Ron isn't talking about the race of the killer. In fact, if a minority kills white people, it's a given it'll get press. Do you think three imprisoned hispanic women would get the attention that kidnapping is getting? I don't. Because that shit happens all the time with illegals and so on.
Trayvon's killing wasn't news until people made a stink (no one was even detained or arrested). What bowie said about the kidnapping, and I'm not sure what Menendez you mean. Hopefully not the rich adopted twins, cause that story is a cable journalist's wet dream with all that WTF going on.
Yeah, those guys were as ethnic as Barbie.
I think there is a little oversimplification going on here. Sure it is easy to spin the yarn about how race plays into the media coverage (or lack of) and you would be able to make many legimate arguments regardless of what your point is. But there are other possible reasons that are not being mentioned here? How many women are on death row right now? Stats that I have read placed the number at around 2% of the total death row population when compared to males. If there are less than a 100 women on death row currently, how many are sentenced on an annual basis? I think it averages around 2-3 women per year convicted. Shouldn't that be considered as one of the main reasons for the media attention. Sure you can throw in race afterwards to continue the dissection of possible biases and be correct, but I think you should start with gender first and how it relates to the current death row population.
We're talking about media coverage, and no, I do not believe this would have received the same attention if it was a latina woman attacking a latino man. The reason the death penalty is even being so aggressively pushed in this case is because it's so high profile of a crime, not because it's so serious. Usually the women who receive the death penalty are multiple murderers or killed kids.
But one of the top crimes women DO get executed for is murdering children.

http://www.deathpenaltyinfo.org/case...th-row-inmatesIf found guilty, Jodi Arias faces the death penalty. If she is sentenced to death, she would join a very small group.
Only three women sit on Arizona's death row, each guilty of a terrible crime.
Of all the women who committed crimes in Arizona in the last 80 years, juries decided these three committed the worst.
Two killed children and one killed an invalid husband who was dying of cancer. All three of them were given the ultimate punishment – death.
In Alabama alone, three out of the four women on death row murdered their children. If you read through that site, a majority of women on death row are there for murdering kids.
Aren't three of the 4 women on Death Row also white? And their victims were white? According to your theory, they should have been plastered all over the media too because it is white on white crime? Or do you think it was the age of the victims that contributed to the lack of coverage? If so, you have now entered an age bias into the equation. If so we got race, gender and age as possible factors to equate when determing media coverage. See? Not so black and white. Pun intended. Also got to take into the account the date of these convictions in comparison to how much media and, in particular, crime coverage has grown since those convictions.
??I don't know what you're talking about, that wasn't my point at all. Actually, I believe a lot of women on death row are black.
I am saying this case got a significant amount of press because a white male was murdered by a female. It would not have gotten as much attention if the victim wasn't white. This isn't really an opinion, even. There are tons and tons of sociological researchers who have done extensive studies into it.
I know exactly what you are saying. And I am actually agreeing with you to a certain degree, as I would agree with the "tons and tons of sociological researchers" that you cited. I am simply saying that in this specific case, the cause of the immense media coverage is not nearly as absolute as you are attempting to make it out to be.
There are many factors that are contributing to the media coverage of the Jodi Arias case and in my opinion race is not first on the list. There is an obvious gender bias as I established before and also a socioeconomic bias as well. For example, if Jodi was some trailer trash crackhead white lady who killed her trailer trash white ex boyfriend, I can guarantee that there wouldn't nearly be as much media coverage. Thus throwing the race factor out the window and making your point invalid.
So, once again, not disagreeing with you that race does not play a role in the relation between a crime and its ensuing media coverage. I am simply saying that it is not the only factor and in some cases, it is not even the primary causal factor.
Hee, I love this...can we rename it the coconut memorial off-topic resurrected from the dead thread?
We're not talking about why SHE is getting attention, Ron and I were discussing the discrepancy in media coverage for minority victims. I agree that social class also plays a significant role. If Travis Alexander weren't a wealthy white male, he would not garner so much sympathy.
It is about the victim. Only the killer can't seem to "get" that.
I think you are correct. I can't recall the last minority victim I watched on Court TV, or read a book about being killed. Mostly white folk dead on 48 hrs and Dateline too. seems that way anyway. I never looked at any raw data on media coverage and the race/status of victims
The reason we can all say 'Trayvon Martin' when trying to think of a minority crime victim is because it's so rare for them to be the subject of a massive media inquiry that they stand out.
