Excommunication is RARELY done as it is seen as the most severe punishment and is only reserved for the most severe of circumstances. It also has to be approved by a full panel, the bishop does not have the authority alone for that because it is so major. A convicted murderer would be excommunicated, or an acting pedophile may as well - it is reserved for the most serious of sins. While sexual sins are very serious in the church, especially to the level that Travis was taking it, he would more likely have faced "disfellowship" which is a time where he can not participate in certain ordinances (going into the temple, partake of the sacrament, giving priesthood blessings...etc.) but not excommunication. I know several people that did things of a similar level and the worse they faced was disfellowship, and some not even to that level, just a long repentance process. Just FYI. :)

I have been in the church for 36 years, since birth, but I have seen it for less, as it depends on the situation. I have had family ex-communicated for less that's why I mentioned it. It can be complicated for sure.

I did some research and what I know is her husband was remarried 5 months after their divorce in 1980. Now granted they could have been separated long before that. Both of the children initially went to live with the father in Nor Cal. hard to draw conclusions off of that but those are the facts.

What I LOVED about those particular juror questions (about Alyce looking over at Jodi, smiling, shrugging) is that they send a message to the smug Jodi (who delights in watching the jury closely!) that what THEY notice in HER behavior carries much more weight in the courtroom. She seems to forget that she is at their very mercy.

Interesting! I know it is a very, very serious punishment, could there be more to it than you knew? Perhaps they weren't repentant? If Travis had been "caught" and wasn't repentant but planned to continue, then they may consider excommunication because they would take that into account. Not trying to be insulting, promise, but it has to go through a full panel and get higher approval (even disfellowshipping has to go through a council).

PS - Good to know a fellow member! There are so many distorted and inaccurate bits of information flying around because of this case, so I try to correct when I can. :)
