Generally it would be done after a conviction. The church also goes along with the laws of the land in that regard, realizing that there are people who are convicted who are innocent (and vice versa really - CAnthony for one). Once she is convicted then yes, then she would most likely be excommunicated. I don't know all the details in it, but I do know it is rare and only done for the worst of the worst, and generally consensual sexual acts outside of a marraige, while a "serious sin" do not usually constitute more than disfellowship or less.
Much also depends on the person too and their circumstances/mentality. There is so much to it, but they do have a full panel and it needs a lot of approval before someone is excommunicated as that revokes their full membership in the church which can include ordinances and eternal blessings that are promised to faithful members.
If a person wants to rejoin the church after excommunication, it is possible but VERY difficult. Generally approval has to be given from the heads of the church (I'm talking the very, very top). I have known an individual that was excommunicated, got his life in order, made amends to those he harmed and after many years was able to be rebaptised, but he had a LOT of interviews and a long period of time before it was approved from the First Presidency of the church.
