Cops Refuse to Help Dad Get Disabled Daughter’s Stolen iPad, He Got it Himself, So Now He’s In Jail
By Matt Agorist on June 11, 2015

Broken Arrow, OK — Brian Massingale called the police after his home was burglarized earlier this week. Days later, he’s the one in jail, not the burglars.

On Monday, the family came home and found that their back door had been kicked in, and multiple iPads, jewelry, and guns were missing. One of the iPads was a special one for Brian’s daughter who has Cerebral Palsy. The iPad has special programs installed for her therapy and communication skills.

After tracking the iPad, police were notified of the location but took no action.

“They refused to go,” Mary Massingale, Brian’s mother said. “They said, It’s not our jurisdiction. Tulsa has to do it. Tulsa said, well we can’t do anything unless Broken Arrow tells us to, well Broken Arrow then said, well, we’re not going to tell them.”

After realizing that police were going to be of no assistance, Brian Massingale decided to take matters into his own hands.

“Our only option was go do it ourselves or let them keep it; that was the only two options we had,” Mary said. “We had no assistance from the law enforcement. None.”

Brian and two other men went to the location of the iPad’s GPS signal. During the visit, a scuffle broke out and according to police the alleged thief was injured with a baseball bat Brian found inside the house.

The alleged thief is now in the hospital, and Brian is jail on charges of burglary and assault with deadly weapon.

“I just can’t believe it,” said Mary Massingale. “I was the victim and now we are the bad guys. (My son) is the victim.”

“So now, instead of allowing us time to try and recover material belongings, now a family member could even end up going to prison just because of some material things that were taken,” BA Police Cp. Leon Calhoun said. “Frustrating, I understand, but now you put yourself or family put themselves in a very serious situation where they may be locked up for a long time.”

The irony here is that had Brian Massingale called to report a small amount of marijuana, a warrant would have likely been issued immediately and a SWAT team deployed.

The fact is that any mention of any ‘illicit substance’ would have resulted in immediate police action. Instead, however, this incident required actual police work. So, the buck was passed back and forth between complacent departments who apparently couldn’t find value in recovering a young disabled girl’s iPad.

NYC police officer kills knife-wielding man after getting slashed in neck

A New York City police officer shot and killed a man who pulled a knife on him Thursday after the officer was slashed in the neck while trying to stop the man from assaulting an elderly woman, authorities said.

Officer Filippo Gugliara, 24, was hospitalized in stable condition. Mayor Bill de Blasio and Police Commissioner William Bratton praised his response at a press conference.

"He faced quite clearly a life-threatening situation with this individual," Bratton said. "But for his intercession, the assault on this 78-year-old woman - we don't know what would have happened."

The incident unfolded at about 2:15 p.m. near a subway station in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn. The 58-year-old suspect was involved in a dispute in a shop that spilled out into the street, they said.

The suspect turned and pushed an elderly woman as she intervened in the incident, police said. The officer, who was patrolling an elevated subway station, heard the commotion and came down the street to help the woman.

The man pulled a knife and slashed the officer, police said. The officer responded by firing two rounds, hitting the man in the torso.

The knife was recovered at the scene.

Doctors said the officer only needed a few stitches. They also said they believe the shoulder strap of the officer's vest apparently deflected the knife, preventing the wound from being more serious.

"Thank God this officer came out OK," De Blasio said.

The assault victim was treated for minor injuries. Police said she had no previous connection to the suspect.

If he does, that's bullshit. Punishing a cop who actually discharged his weapon in an incident when it was actually warranted is insane.

LAPD: No Gun Found On Man Critically Injured In Los Feliz Officer-Involved Shooting

LOS FELIZ (CBSLA.com) ? Police say no gun was recovered from the scene of an officer-involved shooting in Los Feliz that left a man critically injured Friday.

Officers responded to Los Feliz Boulevard and Tica Drive following an officer-needs-help call in the area around 6:30 p.m.

According to a LAPD spokesperson, the call occurred after an officer stopped a man in his early 30s whose arm was allegedly wrapped in a towel.

The man told the officer he needed help and as he got closer, the officer believed the man was holding a gun, the spokesperson said.

The shooting occurred after the officer got out of his vehicle and ordered the man to ?drop the gun,? according to the spokesperson.

Police, however, said nothing was discovered in the towel and no gun was recovered from the scene.

The man was taken to a hospital, where he remained in critical condition. His identity has not been released.

No officers were injured in the shooting.

    An investigation is ongoing.

Columbus, Ohio oficer accidentally shoots 4 yr old girl while attempting to defend himself against her 40 pound dog

A Columbus police officer accidentally wounded a 4-year-old girl in Whitehall on Friday when he fired at a charging dog, police said.

A neighbor and the girl’s uncle identified her as Ava Ellis, who was taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, where police said she was in stable condition.

The officer was at a house in the 4100 block of Chandler Drive investigating a hit-and-run case about 3:10 p.m., Columbus police spokeswoman Denise Alex-Bouzounis said.

As the officer was walking from the home to his patrol car, a woman a few houses away called out to him, saying her sister and the girl’s mother, Andrea Ellis, had cut herself.

The officer was at the doorway when a dog charged at him, Alex-Bouzounis said.

The officer fired once, missing the animal but striking the girl in the right leg. It was unclear whether the girl was hit directly or by a ricochet. The officer has not been identified.

Andrea Ellis was taken to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center for treatment of the cut.

Gary Parsley II said the officer was following up with him about Parsley’s being struck by a car a couple weeks ago. When the girl’s aunt called out to the officer, the officer walked over and Parsley returned to his house, when he heard a shot.

Neighbors say the officer walked back to his patrol car after the shooting.

“He seemed a little disoriented, like he was really bothered,” said Norman Jones, who called the police after hearing the shot. Columbus and Whitehall police arrived at the scene shortly afterward.

Neighbors say Ellis came out of the house saying her daughter had been shot.

    The officer was not injured.

Neighbor Carrie Britton said the family has two dogs and that they were on shock collars and couldn’t get out of the house.

Two dogs were being held in the back of the house after the shooting, according to police.

Police and neighbors gave conflicting information about how many other children were in the house at the time of the shooting, but nobody beside the girl was wounded by a bullet.

Dispatch Reporter Earl Rinehart contributed to this story.

I hate to be "that guy" but you kind of get what you're asking for sometimes... Why flag them for help? Honestly?

I'm not acting like 100% of police interactions end this way. That's ridiculous. But unless you're a cop, former cop, or have police family I don't see the point of expecting assistance.

It'll either get you nothing, get you trouble, or get you hurt.

Thank the blue line. (should this get its own thread?)

Oh, and the article definitely has a bias, but so do I.

LAPD Shoots Unarmed Man Who Flagged Them Down For Help (VIDEO)
    June 21, 2015 • By Randa Morris

An unarmed man who apparently flagged down two police officers in Los Angeles, California for help, was shot three times by those officers, once in the head. Bystanders captured video of police following ‘standard procedure,’ rolling the bloody, motionless body of the shooting victim onto his back, placing his hands in cuffs, and chatting nonchalantly all the while.

According to police, the unidentified man flagged down police at about 6:30 pm on Friday, June 19. His arm was wrapped in a towel. Police responded by telling him to ‘Drop the gun!’ When he ‘failed to comply with the order’ they shot him three times.

Our public servants at work, protecting and serving the citizens of Los Angeles County.

This man was shot for having his arm wrapped in a towel. Why was his arm wrapped in a towel? Was he burned? Was he cut and bleeding? Did he sever a finger? Witnesses say he flagged down the cops because he needed help. These cops did not even bother to ask if he needed help. Instead they shouted ‘Drop the gun’. Then they shot him, not once but three times.

After riddling his body with bullets, the cops continued to ‘protect and serve’ this citizen by putting his lifeless body in handcuffs. Two witnesses captured cell phone video of the officers casually rolling over the man, who appears to have been shot in the head, before cuffing his hands behind his back. They provide him with absolutely no medical attention.

Here’s the video, posted to youtube by Police Brutality.

(It seems worth noting that you don’t see a towel on the man’s arm or anywhere near the scene.)

As we can see from the video, this man’s life is of absolutely no concern to these cops. Neither is yours. Neither is mine. If you’re not one of them, you’re worthless scum.

Police in Los Angeles County have killed at least one person a week, every week, since the year 2000. Well over 600 American citizens. That figure doesn’t include the hundreds of others who have been shot and wounded by these cops, but who survived the encounter.

According to a report from the Youth 4 Justice Coalition, 82 percent of the people killed by law enforcement in Los Angeles County are black or Latino.

The cops want you to know they’re investigating the above officer-involved shooting, to determine if the cops were ‘justified’ when they shot an unarmed man in need of help. Don’t worry, they’ll leave no stone unturned in their attempt to get to the bottom of it. They’re already searching the victim’s criminal history, to come up with ways to slander him in the press.

They won’t tell us his name. They won’t tell us the names of the officers who gunned him down. They won’t tell us about any injuries to his arm which would explain why it was wrapped in a towel, and why he flagged down the cops to begin with. But if he had so much as a traffic ticket or a jaywalking arrest, they’ll make sure that information gets to the public immediately. (He jaywalked once! What a thug!- ed.)

It’s almost certain that, if there is a dashcam video, it will show that these cops shot this man in a matter of seconds.

The cop sympathizers say we just don’t understand the mindset of the police. The opposite is true. We understand that police are trained to view every single person they encounter as a potential criminal and a potential threat. We understand that in order for cops to do what they do, they have to dehumanize the people they police. They can’t see you as a person, as a mother, father, sister, brother, son, daughter. They have to see you as a suspect and treat you as a dangerous criminal.

Cop sympathizers have two opposing lines of defense. On the one hand they tell us that cops ‘risk their necks to protect us every day’. On the other hand they tell us ‘we can’t expect cops to risk their own necks’. That’s why it’s OK when they shoot unarmed citizens first, then pretend to ask questions later. Because they’re heroes who risk their own necks everyday, except when they don’t, because we can’t expect them to.

Here’s what we can’t expect them to do. We can’t expect them to get away with killing one person every single week, for more than a decade. We can’t expect to them to shoot someone in the head for not complying with an order to drop a gun that didn’t exist. We can’t expect them to shoot us, our family pets, or our children, when we call them for help. We can’t expect them to violate our civil and constitutional rights on a regular basis, in the name of ‘crime prevention’.

Yet some people do expect them to do these things, and they expect us not to hold them accountable for any of it. They expect us to turn a blind eye to police brutality, excessive force, rights violations, even criminal activity, because ‘the cops are heroes’.

Heroes don’t beat up women and children. They don’t gun down kids in the park. Heroes don’t kill people, just because they think they can. Heroes don’t shoot men in the back, only cowards do that. Heroes definitely don’t gun down strangers in need of help.

Sure, there are cops who’ve done something selfless and heroic. There are also crackheads, drug dealers, thieves and petty criminals who’ve done something heroic and selfless. Just because some members of a certain group occasionally do good things, doesn’t mean the whole group gets ‘hero status’. There are too many examples of corrupt and abusive cops to pretend that cops are heroes. You can’t talk about ‘good cops’ when we know that police culture itself is a huge part of the problem. Good cops are not ‘good cops’ when they ignore, lie about and cover up for the crimes of bad cops. Any ‘good cops’ there might have been, are no longer cops.

While police say that the shooting is under investigation, they have not stated whether these officers have been placed on leave, pending the outcome. The lack of information in regards to the officers duty status, probably indicates that they have not been suspended or placed on leave.

I can't post the text from that above article for some reason?

Here is another link with text:

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A man with a knife was shot and killed by police in Boston Friday.

Just after 2 p.m., a 45-year-old Somerville man identified as Santos Laboy, attempted to flee from Boston University police on the esplanade. An altercation ensued and state police were called in to assist.
A state trooper shot and killed Laboy when he refused to drop a knife he was carrying on the Silber Way Footbridge. No officers were injured and police say witnesses heard the conversation between the trooper and Laboy before the shots were fired.

<<< Click here to see photos from the scene. >>>

One witness at the scene said, "They saw me freaking out, I got up and just ran and heard the gun shot and people running."

Police say Laboy had a lengthy criminal record and they were looking for him due to outstanding warrants before the shooting. They recovered a folding knife, in the open position, from the scene.
In a video witness Brian O'Grady sent to FOX25, you can hear police yelling, "Watch the crossfire," to fellow officers.

“It was a really intense moment for all the police officers," O'Grady said. "He had a knife, they didn't know what he was gonna do.”

<<<Click here to see video from the scene. >>>

Laboy is believed to be the same man wanted for leaving sexually explicit photos at a Boston business, sources tell FOX25.

Divanny Gonzalez, an employee at the laundry business said, "He was basically leaving explicit pictures under the door and also calling and harassing them and saying very explicit and vulgar things to the ladies who work here.”

While digging into Laboy's background, FOX25 found that he posted some disturbing messages on his Facebook page recently, including one he calls a message to US marshals, Boston police and the probation department, saying, "Despite your threat to use force to capture me if I refuse to surrender, I'm still free and getting stronger by the day. Got nothing to lose."

And just hours after the shooting death of a terror suspect in Roslindale, Laboy wrote that Usaamah Rahim, "Let the FBI and cops catch him in an area where there weren't many people, that's how they move. They dont want any collateral damage, thus, I must move around in crowds."

Boston University released a statement to their students Friday afternoon, saying that they "have no reason to believe there is any continuing threat to the community relating to this incident."

The statement goes on to say that the area around the footbridge is a crime scene and should be avoided.

"The activity that people in the vicinity may see is a consequence of the investigative activity, not an ongoing event," according to the statement.
Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley announced late Friday that he assigned a senior prosecutor to investigate this case.

Officers must place the protection of human life above all other considerations.?
Detroit, MI ? Or so says the official policy of the Detroit Police Department. Yet, on Wednesday, Detroit police continued a high-speed chase into a busy neighborhood, resulting in two small children being killed and others injured.

Brother and sister Michaelangelo and Makiah Jackson, ages 6 and 3 respectively, were playing in front of their home when a police car appeared, chasing what appeared to be a red Challenger. According to eyewitnesses, the police car bumped the Challenger, and the car ?flew up in the air.? Witnesses heard tire squeals, as if the car was attempting to stop, but by then it was going too fast and had lost control and hit the two small children, killing them instantly.

A friend of the family described the horrible scene:

?[The police] were right on their rear, the police car bumped their tail a little bit, and the car flew up in the air,? the friend said. ?There was no need for the police to be that close. I yelled ?WATCH OUT? but it was too late. When the car hit them, both of them just looked at me. They screamed. It just keeps re-playing in my head. ? I ran down there, I yelled out their names, but they were gone. Makiah?s eyes were wide open, they died on impact.?

?I?m the last one they talked to. They looked at me, they were here, I saw their faces. L?il Mama (Makiah) thought I was going to take them to the park, so she came with me to the sidewalk. I told her I promise I?ll take you to the park tomorrow.?

Even after the car had dragged the children a distance down the street, the police did not stop their pursuit. They continued to chase the car across one front lawn after another, finally crashing, critically injuring three more children including three year old Darius Andrews, Jr., Isaiah Williams, 5, and Zyaire Gardner, 7. Twenty-two-year-old LaKendra Hill sustained injuries. The father of the youngest called seven-year-old Zaire ?the real hero,? adding, ?He saved my son?s life. He grabbed him and tried to hold him.?

Police report that the driver of the car they were chasing was 29 year old Lorenzo Harris, who was on parole but had not been reporting in to his parole officer. An unidentified passenger in the car was also in serious condition.

As to other details of the event, police reports are conflicting. On the night of the incident, police Chief James Craig said that the police car had already stopped the chase after they ?lost sight of the car.? After many eyewitnesses had refuted that claim, Craig said that a supervisor had ordered a stop to the pursuit.

Furthermore, in an early report, Craig claimed that police saw an occupant of the car holding a gun. The next day the chief said there was no gun, and that the case started when the police ?made eye contact? with the occupants of the car.

Two small children being killed while playing in their own front yard and several more being injured during a pursuit over what may have been nothing more than a parole violation shows a drastic imbalance in police judgment and in police priorities. For the police to create such a horribly dangerous situation ? a situation that proved tragically fatal ? sends a very clear message. Those with badges are far more concerned with having control and gaining compliance by any means necessary than they are with actually protecting the innocent.

On paper, the official policy of the Detroit Police Department includes this:

?Members involved in a pursuit must question whether the seriousness of the violation warrants continuation of the pursuit. A pursuit shall be discontinued when, in the judgment of the primary unit, there is a clear and present danger to the public which outweighs the need for immediate apprehension of the violator. Officers must keep in mind that a vehicle pursuit has the same potential for serious injury or death as the use of fatal force. ? Officers must place the protection of human life above all other considerations.?
Their true attitude, priorities, ?policy? is written in the blood of small children on those front lawns. Our hearts go out to the victims of this horrible tragedy.

The family of Mikiah and Michael Angelo Jackson has set up a GoFundMe account to help with their funeral expenses, which they said they cannot afford.

Apologies if this was posted. I went back to April 10 & intended to re-read the thread to make sure but I discovered I was going to have to re-live pages of arguments that I wish I hadn't seen the first time round.

Any way, I didn't see this 'til today. It's it's not technically "cops" but it's LE-related about as fucked up as you can get. I guess all these falsely convicted & subsequently executed people will be grateful for their extremely useful posthumous pardons (or whatever you call them in the U.S).

FBI Admits Flaws In Hair Analysis Over Decades

The Justice Department and FBI have formally acknowledged that nearly every examiner in an elite FBI forensic unit gave flawed testimony in almost all trials in which they offered evidence against criminal defendants over more than a two-decade period before 2000.

Of 28 examiners with the FBI Laboratory?s microscopic hair comparison unit, 26 overstated forensic matches in ways that favored prosecutors in more than 95 percent of the 268 trials reviewed so far
, according to the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) and the Innocence Project, which are assisting the government with the country?s largest post-conviction review of questioned forensic evidence.

The cases include those of 32 defendants sentenced to death. Of those, 14 have been executed or died in prison
, the groups said under an agreement with the government to release results after the review of the first 200 convictions.

The FBI errors alone do not mean there was not other evidence of a convict?s guilt. Defendants and federal and state prosecutors in 46 states and the District are being notified to determine whether there are grounds for appeals. Four defendants were previously exonerated.

The admissions mark a watershed in one of the country?s largest forensic scandals, highlighting the failure of the nation?s courts for decades to keep bogus scientific information from juries, legal analysts said. The question now, they said, is how state authorities and the courts will respond to findings that confirm long-suspected problems with subjective, pattern-based forensic techniques ? like hair and bite-mark comparisons ? that have contributed to wrongful convictions in more than one-quarter of 329 DNA-exoneration cases since 1989.

And this is why I'm not a full supporter of the death penalty.

There's been a few times when I've been watching U.S true crime stuff on the Australian CI channel & they've gone into great detail about getting a conviction based on hair or bitemark analysis. More than once I've thought "well that's weird" because they've claimed the conviction was won on evidence that couldn't ever prove anything definitive - like claiming a >99% match in hair with no root bulb. I always just assumed the show's producers got it wrong or exaggerated to make a better story.

Now I know to look up these cases & see if they're on an Innocence Project list.
