Grieving family members cleaning out the Maine house of a relative who died earlier this year discovered something more grisly than uncashed checks and old birthday cards: a human body.
The family of 82-year-old Douglas Scott were going through his Casco house over the weekend when they found skeletal remains in an outbuilding, the Department of Public Safety of the Maine State Police said Monday.
The State Medical Examiner's Office began examining the remains on Sunday, but officials said additional testing and examination is expected to take place over the next few weeks before the body can be identified.
Police will also interview witnesses and 'other persons of interest.'
It's unclear how long the remains were in the house.
The Maine State Police said there is no threat to the public.
