i did read it, and yeah, that guy said some bonehead things, but i'm just saying that i can't for the life of me understand why some people are pushing so hard for this nail polish to be labeled a bad thing. it may save lives and it may save people from going through the most traumatic thing ever. i think it is a waste of brainpower to fight against date rape drug detecting nail polish when it has the potential for so much good.
i really don't get why anyone is opposed to this? i mean, seriously.
No one to my knowledge is against these products existing.
However, marketing "anti-rape" products can quickly spur into a dangerous notion that rape is always preventable and detectable. It's a band aid to bigger issue.
I'm not excited that there's rape detection nail polish, I'm repulsed that it has to exist. And I'm also leary that since this is a seemingly highly marketable item, this is going to be the target approach to rape and that "women should be more protective of their bodies", rather than fixing the root of the issue.
And like Emily said: rapists are going to rape, regardless of some nail polish. In fact, the ones who use the date rape technique will now just look for another sedative they can use that the polish won't detect. Leaving girls who think they're one up on the game in hot water once their nail polish doesn't detect the new date rape drug.
This nail polish shouldn't be celebrated as a solution to rape.
i don't see anyone, anywhere lauding it as the solution to rape - all i see are posts everywhere saying that it shouldn't be lauded as the solution to rape. some people are trying to force public opinion by convincing the world that everyone is incorrectly assuming it is a solution.
it's a tool in the tool box, like whistles, mace and tasers. more useful, actually because it can help a person before they are in physical danger.
to me, it sounds like both you and emmie are against the product existing, because all i've heard from both of you are the possible negative consequences to the product and none of the possible positive results it may yield.
wait until it's widely available and tested irl and you may see that it is effective.
Not sure why you're getting a massive attitude with me on this.
Force public opinion? How do you force the public's opinion? You're pissed at me and Emily for addressing what we see as an obvious concern. mmkay. We didn't say anywhere that this wouldn't help some women in some cases...
Rape is a really touchy issue, considering there are fucking tons of idiots who think it doesn't even happen a lot, and that women put themselves in those positions. Some of those idiots are major political figures who have a lot of influence on the public.
If you don't see how this product just gives those assholes more room to blame a woman for not protecting herself, rather than looking at the rapist as a raper, I've got nothing else for you.
If you don't see how this could easily put women in danger by thinking they're safe, when some asshole quickly figures out this formula and just finds another drug, I've got nothing else for you.
If you're totally okay with just cheering on the nail polish, rather than challenging its possible dangers and risks, then we have nothing else to discuss here.to me, it sounds like both you and emmie are against the product existing, because all i've heard from both of you are the possible negative consequences to the product and none of the possible positive results it may yield.
I spent almost 2 hours at the doctor today because he was running late as usual. To top it off, I got a flu shot, and for the first time ever it hurt and still does.
i'm not against the product existing. but i am against painting my nails--aside from my toe nails and i ain't dippin' my toe in my drink. i think i stated mulitple times that there is nothing wrong with taking precautions. there is simply something wrong with saying, 'well why didn't she....' instead of, 'how do we keep him from being a fucking rapist.'
there are also glasses that can detect date rape drugs. which seem much more practical to me, but i sure as hell haven't heard of any bars using them.
and, as i mentioned in my fb post, it is actually very few rapes where the woman (or dude) was drugged. the vast majority of rapes happen when you're with someone you know and feel safe with.
i was drugged once. i don't believe the guy intended to rape me. i don't have proof that the guy i believe did it, did anything, but i'm pretty confident that i know who did it. i do recall him buying me a drink. but i don't remember anything after that point. i remember waking up the next morning, calling my boyfriend, and asking WTF happened and why i had vomit in my hair.
I remember back when I was in DC and frequenting the club that there was a rash of drink spiking. No one reported a rape/date rape, but the behavior became clear of those who'd had their drink drugged. A male friend of mine who was very introverted and private was acting very strange and randomly started making out with people, including me. The next day when he inquired as to what happened not only was he mortified, he felt beyond violated because of how out of control of his own actions he was. I felt horrible for him.
this is sad, but it reminds me of my own story a bit.
i was told that i was being 'extra emily' that night. i knew this kid from high school and we always HATED each other. he was the most terrible person i knew. as adults, we worked for the same company and were friendly enough with each other in public, because we had to be. i took the drink he bought me as a sort of peace offering. i guess i talked mad shit about him all night right to his face. i threw up multiple times. my new boyfriend told me he loved me. don't recall any of it. glad we had a DD that night. it was my 22nd birthday.
That's horrible Em:(
Iirc, the drink drugging stopped just as randomly as they started and no one was caught. It crossed several club nights in the same scene.
I went to a bar with a guy friend and I got a so co lime and it smelled and tasted weird. I told my guy friend I didn't want it-and he said "well I will take it" he chugged it down and almost instantly was redic drunk/drowsy. He was the DD and has a pretty high tolerance, but was so messed up off one drink that he couldn't drive home. He's a big dude, and I'm pretty sure that's the only reason the drink didn't cause him to lose consciousness.
I know most date rape drugs are odorless/tasteless, but not the shit that was put into my drink.
Because he didn't want to waste the drink, and we planned on staying there for awhile. I don't think I have ever had a DD not have one or two drinks.
When I'm a DD though, I don't drink at all. I drove home one time after 2 beers, and a cop pulled up behind me with his lights on, I pulled over and he zoomed passed me. I was probably under the limit, but I took that as a sign to never do that shit again.
Yep, that's a sign. Many years ago, Ray and I were driving back to my house in separate vehicles after going out after work with all the guys from his department, I was the company's Controller, and Ray was driving a company vehicle. Ray was in front of me and got pulled over, and I pulled over right behind the cop. I talked Ray's way out of a DUI by telling the cop I lived right down the street (true), and we were going right home. I don't know how I pulled that one off because I was drinking along with Ray. It helped that the brother of the Owner of our company was well known on the police force, and Ray was in a marked company vehicle. Lesson learned, and I do not ever drink and drive anymore. We both got lucky, and nobody got hurt. We were much younger, more reckless, and very stupid. Now, I have no tolerance for drinking and driving. I'm the one who makes sure everyone is accounted for and nobody drives drunk.
Posted last night about getting a flu shot and how it hurt. Just went into the bathroom and discovered I'm covered in red blotches all over my neck and chest. No rash, just lots of red blotches. Great way to start the day.
OMFG, can my day off start any worse? I was cutting a vine that is growing up into my shutters and apparently disturbed BEES that have a nest inside. I got stung right on my thumb, and it hurts like crazy. Going to spray those mother fuckers tonight. I also stepped off the ladder from almost the top and landed in the vine/bush. Not my day.
I get tons of bees every year due to all the flowering bushes and trees I planted. I had no idea what it would be like when I moved to the sticks, but every year there are nests in my sheds, shutters, and everywhere else they can make them.
Interestingly, right after the hurricane in 2010 or 2011 (not Sandy), a wasp type nest suddenly appeared in a tree/bush I see every day. I was going back and forth to the generator and got stung twice, and then I saw this huge white faced hornet go into the nest. I was fucking terrified, so my ex came up, and he sprayed it. We put it on some cardboard and dropped it off in another town when we went to get gas. Later that night he texted me and said there was a gas station in that town that had white hornets flying all over, and I believed him. He said he saw it on the news and that it was probably where we dropped off the nest. I can be very gullible.
