A TODDLER survived two days on his own after his mother tragically collapsed and died while feeding his one-year-old brother, who then choked to death.
Police said Erika Tomassian, originally from Sydney, was feeding baby Michael at their North Fuller Ave, Los Angeles home when she died from natural causes. Michael, who was strapped in a high chair, fatally choked on his food.
The cries of Tomassian?s severely dehydrated toddler, two-year-old Nathan, led to the heartbreaking discovery.
Tomassian, who was in her mid-40s, had recently adopted the two young brothers.
?[Police and firefighters] saw a mother on the floor who apparently was deceased from natural causes, and they saw a one-year-old that was strapped into a seat as though she had been feeding him deceased as well. It appeared that he had aspirated on some food,? LAPD Lt. John Jenal told ABC7.
Nathan was rushed to hospital and is in a stable condition. Lt. Jenal said authorities are now looking for a new home for him.
According to her Facebook page, Tomassian was originally from Sydney and studied film and TV production at Meadowbank Tafe. She worked at 7 Stars Production in LA, her page states.
Lt. Jenal said a neighbour, who hadn?t heard from Tomassian for several days, went to check on her on Monday. He called police when he heard the two-year-old crying.
Tomassian had recently been treated for bronchitis and chest pains, and may have died from complications from the illness, according to police.
?What adds tragedy to this is that this woman had just opened up her heart and her home to these two boys and adopted them,? Lt. Jenal said.
Neighbour Estela Avendano, who used to babysit the boys, said she was heartbroken at the news.
?They were wonderful people,? she told KTLA. ?They were kids, they were babies.?
