I've ALWAYS had this same belief. You can be an Addict, you can be an asshole while being an addict even if you aren't an asshole sober. But being hopped up on drugs or drink doesn't MAKE you a racist. That shit stands alone. Same goes for mental illness. Mental illness is mental illness. I think there a lot of people out there that know this shit is wrong but they've been raised with racist ideas and even though they keep themselves in check because ideally, that's not the person they want to be, but when they are confronted, their privelige comes out and belies their facade.
It's like the idea of mansplaining and shit. Even well meaning men end up doing it once in a while. The difference is when some get called on it they go oh shit, your right but others double down because they feel personally insulted.
