Toddler Found Unresponsive, Living With 90 Dead and Dying Animals in House; Mother Charged

GRAY COURT, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Deputies in Laurens County said a woman faces numerous charges after a 2-year-old boy was found unresponsive and badly bruised in a filthy home filled with dozens of dead and dying animals.

Deputies said they were called to a home on Martin Lake Road just after 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Deputies arrived to find the boy unresponsive with bruises on his face, neck, back and other areas, according to Lt. Scott Franklin.

Franklin said the boy was airlifted to Greenville Memorial Hospital, where the child remained in the intensive care unit Wednesday morning.

Deputies said two other young children, ages one and two, were living in the home, which was covered in trash, animal feces and in serious disrepair.

Franklin said what was most shocking was the number of dead and dying animals that were being kept in containers in the home.

?I?ve never seen anything like it in my 20 years doing this,? Franklin said.

Animal Control was called to the scene and seized approximately 90 animals, including cats, dogs, rodents, reptiles and tarantulas, Franklin said.

The two other children were placed in DSS custody.

Deputies interviewed the mother, 25-year-old Savanah Morgan, who originally told them the two-year-old boy had choked while eating a bag of chips. Franklin said Morgan later changed her story and said that she had dropped the child. Doctors said the child may have been dropped but his injuries were too severe for that to be all that happened, Franklin said.

On Wednesday, Franklin said warrants were filed charging Morgan with abuse to inflict great bodily injury on a child, cruelty to animals, and three counts of unlawful neglect of a child.

Franklin said more charged are likely to be filed in the case.

During Warfel’s Thursday court appearance, the judge stated that Warfel told authorities that Ember died on or about June 18. The judge also stated that Warfel said he did not remove her body from the crib and did not notify anyone of her death.

Warfel told authorities that he threw trash into the child’s bedroom to disguise the smell of her decomposing body. He reportedly was living in a motel when the baby’s body was found.

The judge stated that Ember’s mother lives in New York.

It was also confirmed that another of their children died in 2013.

Charges are now pending against the father of a child deputies said was found severely injured in a home filled with dead animals and filth, authorities said.


Lt. Judy Stiles said child and animal neglect charges are pending against Matthew Batton.

Deputies will not arrest Batton at this time because they need a parent to make decisions on behalf of the 2-year-old in the hospital, Stiles said. His arrest for unlawful neglect will happen once deputies determine the child's health status.

The child's mother, Savanah Morgan, 25, was charged Wednesday with abuse to inflict great bodily injury on a child, three counts of unlawful neglect of a child and cruelty to animals, according to warrants.

Her bond was set Wednesday at $85,000 for each of those charges Wednesday. This breaks down to $5,000 for the cruelty to animals charge, $10,000 each for three counts of unlawful neglect of a child and $50,000 for the great bodily injury abuse charge.


Morgan is 36 weeks pregnant, according to investigators.

They are charging me with the 3 counts of neglect and one count of animal cruelty. They haven't picked me up yet due to my son being in the hospital still and Noone else being allowed to see him or check on him or anything.
