Walker Montgomery (16) killed himself after being sextorted by Nigerian hackers

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...s-parents.html

A distraught father has spoken out about the dangers of 'sextortion' scams targeting impressionable teenagers after his 16-year-old son committed suicide.

Brian Montgomery, of Starkville, MS, told how his son Walker killed himself on December 1, 2022, after Nigerian hackers posing as an attractive young girl on social media talked him into sending nude videos, then threatened to release them publicly unless he paid them off.

I had something similiar happen to me as a teen (not giving deets) and I literally thought my life was over. Stuff like this changes a person. The sociopath that did this to me was wealthy and wasnt doing it for money.

I wonder how much they wanted. This poor kid couldnt see any other option

I received an email from an anonymous person stating that they were able to hack into my phone's camera and take photos of me masturbating. They said if I didn't send them $4,000 in bitcoin, they'd release them. At first, I freaked, but then I'm like go ahead, I can't raise that type of money. I didn't say that to them, but that was my thoughts.

I get those messages all the time. They're spam. Don't reply and let them know that your email is valid, or else they will inundate you with crap.

Something similar happened to my nephew a few years ago but he told my sister and they went to the cops. My daughter wonders why I'm so protective of what she does on her phone and drilling it into her head that she doesn't need to tell anyone anything about herself online. All her friends have snapchat and are adding all these boys who magically just end up their same age and are also SSSOOOOO into them. I check my daughter's friends list at random times, even when she's in the middle of using her phone, to make sure she only has people she knows on there. She hates it but it's either that or no phone at all...I may be a little too overprotective but I didn't have anyone looking out for me when I was a kid/teen (and we didn't have this crap) and I don't want my kids to go through anything I had to.

We, as a family are pretty over protective of my granddaughter's on line footprint but she's pretty aware too. She's almost 15 now and I worry. I would hope that if she ever got a random message threat or odd follower her first instinct would be to go to her parents or one of us grands. Luckily for me my sons were not raised in the high tech times. They didn't get cell phones until they were past 17.
I'd be like you. Better to be safe and aware than ignorant of what your child is doing online, etc.

I have gotten those emails a few times. I knew it was bullshit because I have never done anything like that, so there would be no video

That's what every parent should be doing. I am always shocked at how young kids are when they get phones nowadays, but even more shocked that most parents just trust their kids blindly with the phones.
