New search at home with connections to Jeffrey Willis

WZZM-TV has obtained copies of two search warrants related to the investigation into Jeffrey Willis.

Both documents provide new details on the case, and why police have searched a home in Norton Shores multiple times.

Willis is charged with the 2014 death of Rebekah Bletsch, a failed attempt to kidnap a teenage girl last spring and a number of child pornography-related counts. All of the multiple felony charges are pending trial in Muskegon County Circuit Court.

The recently unsealed documents are affidavit for search warrants related to the investigation. One from June 27 asked for permission to search Kevin Bluhm’s cellphone and iCloud account. Bluhm is the cousin of Willis.

Another dated May 17 asked a judge for permission to search a home on Bailey Street in Norton Shores.

The search warrants were approved. They remained sealed at the Muskegon County Hall of Justice until this week.

The May warrant says police wanted to search the Bailey Street home because it once belonged to Willis’ deceased grandfather. According to neighbors, the home has been vacant for years. A tip to police led to the May search after a neighbor said Willis was often hanging around the vacant home. Willis had been seen there at about the time Heeringa was last seen.

A Muskegon County Sheriff's Department detective told the judge that an external computer hard drive located at Willis' home on Sheridan Road had a file folder labeled "vics." Prosecutors previously told a judge they believe "vics" was short for "victims."

Prosecutors also previously said in court at Willis' preliminary hearing that inside the "vics" file folder was a sub folder labeled "RSB," the initials of Rebekah Sue Bletsch.

The new unsealed search warrant says a Michigan State Police computer forensic examiner also found a folder labeled "JLH," the initials of Jessica Lynn Herringa. According to the sworn statement, the detective says inside the "JLH" folder were numerous electronic images of news reports and/or photos pertaining to the abduction of Herringa.

The document also reveals that some of Willis' relatives told police that Willis was the only family member with keys to the Bailey Street home and that investigators also found a list of “serial killers of America” in Willis’ van. One entry on that list which had been marked was a reference to a pair of serial killers known as the “Toolbox Murderers.” The search warrant states that the “Toolbox Murderers” abducted and murdered multiple women in California in the 1970s.

A trial for Willis is likely still months away. The search warrant from June reveals what Bluhm told police about the Heeringa investigation. Bluhm claimed around the time Heeringa went missing that Willis asked him to stop by the Bailey Street home.

According to the sworn affidavit, Bluhm said he entered the home’s basement and observed a “female lying motionless on the floor with her hands and legs restrained.” Bluhm told police he believed the woman to be Jessica Heeringa.

Bluhm later told police he made the story up, and last month he entered guilty pleas to two counts of lying to police. Bluhm is being held in the Muskegon County Jail and will be back in court Sept. 20 for sentencing.

Police searched the Bailey Street home multiple times. They have not said if they found evidence that Heeringa was ever in the basement.

The Norton Shores police chief would not comment on the new information, or provide any other details on the active investigation into the disappearance of Heeringa, who vanished April 26, 2013, while working at a gas station in Norton Shores.

Defense seeks to dismiss Rebekah Bletsch murder charge against Jeffrey Willis

The defense team for Jeffrey Willis -the man facing murder charges for Rebekah Bletsch and Jessica Heeringa as well as allegedly kidnapping a teen- asked a judge to dismiss Bletsch's murder charges against Willis.

Willis' defense attorneys filed a motion Dec.16, 2016 asking Muskegon County Circuit Judge William Marietti to dismiss the Bletsch murder case because Willis' constitutional rights were violated in jail searches from last August through the fall. They wrote,"the government contrived to obtain defendant's notes to his attorney and use them against him as a tool of the criminal investigation and prosecution."

The prosecution filed in opposition ultimately stating they did not read the notes and will not admit them as evidence.

First, in their 31-page brief, the defense wrote that law enforcement read, shared and searched for additional notes Willis wrote in jail, meant for his attorney, without notifying the court or defense team.

On Aug. 8 they say jail staff found notes in Willis' jumpsuit to be laundered, which were then handed over to investigators on the Major Crimes Task Force--the team handling the Bletsch, Heeringa, and kidnapping cases.

Then, Sept. 2, the defense writes, jail staff removed Willis from his cell without explaining they were going to search. Then investigators searched and found notes on a legal pad on a bookshelf, separate from Willis' folder marked "Attorney-Client." The defense wrote in these notes "[Willis] provides a narrative description of the MJN events and his whereabouts on the date of Bletsch’s death.” The kidnapping victim was referred to as MJN in court documents.

Finally, only jail staff searched Willis' cell again last October looking at the "Attorney-Client" folder, according to defense. According to the defense's brief, a sergeant testified he heard rumors that Willis was making lists of identifying information about jail staff and were concerned.

In response, the prosecution's 33-page brief filed Jan. 18 states Willis' rights were not violated. Prosecutors wrote while law enforcement saw Willis' notes the prosecution never did: "the prosecutor never saw the notes and is not privy to their contents and has no intention of using the notes or their contents at trial."

The prosecutors explained that the notes found in Willis' jail jumpsuit Aug. 8 were not marked for his attorney. They added Willis testified that when he asked for his notes back he did not tell jail staff the notes were meant for his attorney.

In September the prosecutors say investigators searched cells of both Willis and his cousin Kevin Bluhm, looking for evidence in Jessica Heeringa's murder case.

Their brief reads that when Bluhm stopped talking to investigators: "The task force decided it would be a good idea to toss both Bluhm and [Willis'] jail cells on the same day. This was to be a general search where the investigators were interested in tossing both cells to see if they could find anything that might assist in the [Heeringa] investigation, including journal type notes."

The prosecutors also reiterate the legal pad found in Willis' cell containing notes were not marked for attorney-client privilege.

Finally in October, during the second cell search, the prosecution wrote only jail staff searched Willis' cell due to the aforementioned safety concerns of staff.

It is unclear when Judge Marietti will issue an opinion on the matter. Friday, FOX 17 spoke with law enforcement leaving his office who said the Judge gave no inclination as to when he'd rule after they discussed this development Friday morning.

Also on Jan. 18, Judge Marietti filed an opinion in response to the prosecution seeking to introduce evidence regarding Willis' alleged involvement in the abduction and murder of Jessica Heeringa April 26, 2013, and allegedly abducting a minor, MJN, on April 16, 2016. The defense opposes the potential evidence, calling it irrelevant.

Judge Marietti wrote that some evidence will be admitted, including such that shows Willis executed a "common plan" when he allegedly assaulted these three young women in isolated areas, driving a silver van, each incident within three years of each other.

Appeals court rejects request to dismiss Bletsch murder case

The trial for suspected serial killer Jeffrey Willis can now go forward after an appeals court has denied to hear his request to dismiss one of the murder cases against him.

On June 2, the Michigan Court of Appeals denied a request by Willis’ defense team to dismiss the Rebekah Bletsch murder case.

“The Court orders that the application for leave to appeal is DENIED for failure to persuade the Court of the need for immediate appellate review,” the court’s short order states.

The defense claimed detectives and guards violated Willis’ constitutional rights when they took notes from his jail cell.

They said the notes included details about a separate kidnapping case, where Willis claimed to be the day Bletsch was killed, and an explanation for evidence found in his van.

The prosecutor said the notes were potentially incriminating, but that Willis never said they were for his attorney. The jail shared them with investigators but not the prosecutor’s office, the prosecutor wrote.

Corrections officers searched Willis’ cell two more times, combing through two envelopes marked for Willis’ attorney, court records show. While information from those envelopes was not passed onto prosecutors, the prosecution said police told them “generally” about Willis’ notes on a legal pad also found in his cell.

Willis’ attorneys could still appeal the decision to the Michigan Supreme Court.

A start date for the Bletsch murder trial has not yet been scheduled.

Teen who Jeffrey Willis allegedly tried to abduct testifies; police detail items found in homes

(Oct. 24, 2017) MUSKEGON, Mich. - A new week of testimony began Tuesday in the trial of a Muskegon County man accused of killing a mom who was out jogging in 2014.

The trial of Jeffrey Willis in the murder of Rebekah Bletsch entered the second week Tuesday morning.

Tuesday's witnesses included a teen girl referred to as MJN who testified that Willis tried to abduct her in April 2016. The instance with the girl led to Willis's eventual arrest. MJN previously testified in the preliminary hearing of Willis for the murder of Jessica Heeringa who disappeared in 2013 from an Exxon gas station in Norton Shores.

The teen described in court walking home from a party, sober, in the early morning hours when she got lost. A silver van pulled up behind her and she asked the driver if she could use his cell phone. He said yes, but only if she got in the van.

MJN then testified that when she got in the van, the driver rolled up the windows, locked the doors and said his phone battery was dead and she couldn't use it. He then reached under the seat and pulled out a gun, with an orange tip and pointed it at her. She then unlocked the door and jumped out while the van was still moving along Green Creek Road.

She identified Willis as the driver of the van.

The next witness, Dawn Schmitt, saw MJN running down the road yelling for help and "he's got a gun!" She let her in her home and they called police.

Other witnesses called Tuesday included police who responded to MJN's call and also investigators who then tied the description that she gave of Willis's van to Willis.

Tuesday afternoon, Muskegon County Detective Chad Peterson took the stand. Peterson was involved in the search of Willis home on South Sheridan Road.

Peterson testified about finding a handgun in the dresser of Willis' master bedroom, along with an external hard drive, a thumb drive and computer towers. In another room, he found needles inside a small zipped bag.

Outside in Willis' shed, Peterson says they found a green bag with a camera inside and also underwear that was wrapped in aluminum foil in the attic of the shed.

Michigan State Police Sgt. Tom Flowers testified about the items he found in a black tool box which was found in Willis' van. Items found included a diagram of the female body with injection sites on the lid, handcuffs, chain, rope, batteries, a leather ball gag, a steel pole with restraints, gloves, lubricant, and a sex toy with batteries. Also found were a picture of a man with two naked women, a list of names and keys.

In a locked box underneath the driver's seat, police found ziploc bags with gloves, a Walther P22 pistol with .22 ammunition, contact lenses, an orange cap, syringes and a vial of liquid determined to be insulin, and blue pills determined to be viagra.

Michigan State Police Sgt. Zachary Sparks testified of items found at Willis' grandfather's former home on Bailey Street. Sparks testified that Willis was the only person to have keys to the home.

Sparks testified about finding a written note at the Bailey Street location that had three sections: one listing a woman's personal items and two sections listing gear, tools and sex toys. Handwriting analysis showed that the note was written by Willis.

Jeffrey Willis guilty of murdering jogger Rebekah Bletsch

Jeffrey Willis is guilty of first-degree murder in the 2014 killing of jogger Rebekah Bletsch in rural Muskegon County.

The 12-member jury returned the verdict after 1 1/2 hours of deliberation following the two-week trial. They found him guilty on Thursday, Nov. 2, of premeditated murder as well as felony firearm.
    http://www.mlive.com/news/muskegon/i.../post_366.html

Details we didn't know before the Jeffrey Willis trial

    Bletsch's DNA was found

Some of the most critical evidence against Willis involved Bletsch's DNA that was found on two items inside a toolbox found in his van. Michigan State Police forensic scientist Michelle Schmitt testified that Bletsch's DNA was on a pair of gloves and there was "strong support" it also was found on a dildo in the toolbox. It is possible that the DNA was on the gloves and was transferred to the dildo, defense attorney Fred Johnson mentioned later.

In addition, there was "strong support" that Willis' DNA also was on the gloves, Schmitt testified. Willis' DNA was found on the muzzle, barrel and grip of the gun identified as the murder weapon by ballistics experts, according to forensic scientist David Hayhurst.
    Two shots were "execution" style

Muskegon County Prosecutor D.J. Hilson during his closing argument presented his theory on what happened to Bletsch.

He said while she was out jogging, Willis pulled up in his van and somehow lured her to his van. He pointed a gun at her and told her to remove her armband containing her cell phone and sunglasses and pile them on the side of the road, presumably so her cell phone wouldn't give away her location.

When he attempted to get Bletsch into his van, Bletsch ran and he shot her in the back of her head, Hilson said. After she fell, he approached her and shot her two times "execution style" in the head, he said. One shell casing was found in the middle of the road and two more were found near blood stains left by Bletsch where she fell.
    Willis covered his tracks

Willis acted like a guilty man long before he was ever a suspect in the Bletsch homicide, according to Hilson.

On his panicked drive home after the killing, he decided he would make a call from his home landline to try to set up an alibi that he was home, Hilson said. That call was to his friend Shawn Stefanich, a Norton Shores Police officer.

Willis made a copy of his phone record of the call and put it in a folder on his computer labeled with Bletsch's initials and code for her date of death.

Willis testified he did that after a co-worker told him a silver minivan was involved in Bletsch's death -- something that was never suspected by police.

The phone record was placed in the computer folder shortly after Bletsch's death and two years before Willis' arrest. Police drove the route from the murder scene to Bletsch's home and discovered he had time to drive home after the homicide and make the call.

Jeffrey Willis sentenced to life in prison for Rebekah Bletsch’s murder

Jeffrey Willis will spend life in prison without parole for the murder of Rebekah Bletsch in June 2014.

Willis was convicted last month of killing Bletsch, a mother who had been jogging near her home after work.

Willis requested to go back to jail and not be present in the courtroom during his sentencing, avoiding statements from the family of Rebekah Bletsch. As Willis left the courtroom, he turned to the family and blew a kiss as the crowd called him a coward.
Left standing before rows of family and community members, Josephson, Reamer and Bletsch's sister Nicole Winberg addressed the court, also reading a letter from several of Bletsch's friend.

"Becky was everything a big sister should be," Josephson told the court. "I will never forget the time I was with my sister and I asked her, ‘Becky are you pregnant?’ She said 'no.' I told her I had a dream she was pregnant, a few days later Becky showed up at my door and said, 'your dream came true.' From that moment on that child became her world."

Winberg also called Willis to confess and return Jessica Heeringa's body to her family.

"I ask that he find it in himself to give the Heeringa family their daughter back," said Winberg. "They deserve a body to lay to rest. He claims that he’s not a monster, but his actions speak

    louder than words."
    Yay for this sheriff!
Convicted Murderer Jeffrey Willis Forced To Listen To Victim’s Families On Ride To Prison

Convicted murderer Jeffrey Willis was transported to prison today. And on the way there he was forced to listen to victim-impact statements made by the family members of the woman he killed.

Williams had previously opted out of hearing such statements by skipping most of his sentencing hearing on December 18 earlier this week. Relatives of Rebekah Bletsch, who was murdered by Williams in 2014, spoke at that sentencing hearing despite Williams’ absence–and Muskegon County Sheriff Michael Poulin made a CD recording of their words.

As deputies drove Willis 145 miles to his new accommodations at a state prison, that CD was played five times over.
