I'd like to say, as a mom of 4 (ages 15, 14, 14, and 10) that I'd know if one of my kids went off the deep end like this. These parents were hands off, I'm sure of it. Sad.

Yeah, see that's what I'm thinking. I don't have kids, but I know how my mom and my aunts were with me and my cousins and they would know something was up. They'd at least find a picture... I think these parents just gave no fucks. I mean, that has to be it, otherwise a 12yr old wouldnt find it rational to kill a person over a character.
I will be that mom who sneakily will read journals if I have to. And not sorry about it either.
I would, too. My kids, luckily, just put all their shit online, so I Facebook stalk. Their friends, too. I read it all so I know what everyone is up to, who's dabbling in stuff I don't want my kids near, etc.
I mean, granted, my kids are all 18+ now, but I want them safe.
Example: My daughter's best friend is now dating someone who, really, hangs out with gang kids. That shit won't fly in my house. My daughter has been advised that she's not to be anywhere where his friends are at any time. Yes, she's 20, and I can't stop her, but I'll be damned if I don't weigh in on her safety. Those kids are my freaking life.
