Israel Keyes is dead, according to the Department of Corrections (DOC). DOC said: Keyes died last night at the Anchorage Jail. The cause of death is still under investigation.

Keyes is accused of abducting 18-year-old Samantha Koenig from a Midtown coffee shop in February, then murdering her and leaving her body in Matanuska Lake.

Keyes was scheduled to go on trial in March of next year and could have faced the death penalty.

    Currier suspect commits suicide
Police say Israel Keyes confessed to killing the Essex couple in June 2011. He killed himself Sunday in an Alaska prison.

Israel Keyes, the prime suspect in the kidnapping and killing of an Essex couple in June 2011, committed suicide in an Alaska prison, federal and state authorities said Sunday.

They also said Keyes was linked to three homicides and had laid claim to at least four others in Washington State and one in New York, but authorities said Sunday they had not confirmed those five cases.

Keyes, 34, of Anchorage, Alaska, took his life Sunday morning while in custody in Alaska, the U.S. Attorney's Office in Vermont and the Chittenden County State's Attorney said in a joint announcement. He was found dead in his cell and Alaska troopers were notified about 6:30 a.m., a department spokeswoman said.

Keyes had been jailed on charges relating to the kidnapping and killing of Samantha Koenig, 18, formerly of Anchorage, according to the federal court indictment in Alaska.

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Alaska disclosed for the first time Sunday that as part of the Koenig homicide murder investigation, Keyes confessed to the murders of William and Lorraine Currier of Essex, officials said.

Keyes name had been rumored in Vermont in the Currier case since April when police began to focus on him, but no federal or state prosecutor or investigator in Vermont was willing to go on the record and accuse Keyes publicly with the break-in, abduction and killing of the Curriers.

Since early April federal, state and local authorities from Vermont had begun working with Alaska authorities in investigating the Currier murders, officials confirmed.

Although searches in Essex and at a landfill in Coventry were unable to locate the Curriers remains, investigators obtained enough details to confirm that Keyes did murder the Curriers, U.S. Attorney Tris Coffin and Chittenden County State's Attorney T. J. Donovan said on Sunday.

Keyes also claimed to investigators that he had committed multiple other murders throughout the country. Efforts to investigate those murders have been ongoing and will continue, officials said.

Based on discussions between Keyes and investigators in Alaska, Alaska authorities requested that Vermont authorities not publicly disclose information linking Keyes to the Curriers murders in an effort to further the investigations of other murders.

Vermont authorities agreed with this request as the public was not at risk due to Keyes incarceration and in the interest of identifying the victims of unsolved murders. The ongoing investigation has not revealed evidence of Keyes committing other murders in Vermont.

A press conference about Keyes suicide and the Currier murders is planned for 1:30 p.m. Monday at the U. S. Attorney's Office in Burlington.

Israel Keyes, Samantha Koenig's Killer, Is Linked To Murders In Several States

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Israel Keyes, in jail for the killing of an Alaska barista, gradually began confessing to investigators that he had killed others: a couple in Vermont, four people in Washington state, someone in New York.

But he was slow to come forward with details, warning investigators he would stop talking if his name was released publicly.

"He was very, very, very sensitive to his reputation, as odd at that sounds," Anchorage Police Chief Mark Mew said. "We had to keep things extra quiet in order to keep him talking with us."

Keyes committed suicide in an Alaska jailhouse Sunday, leaving behind an incomplete picture of a loner who traveled the country for more than a decade, picking victims at random and methodically killing them. Officials believe there are more victims in other states, but they may never know who they are.

Authorities wouldn't say how Keyes killed himself, only that he was alone in his cell. They also did not say whether he left a note.

"We're going to continue to run down leads and continue our efforts to identify his victims so we can bring some closure to the families," said Mary Rook, the FBI supervisor in Alaska.

While under arrest in connection with the disappearance of 18-year-old barista Samantha Koenig, Keyes confessed to the deaths of Bill and Lorraine Currier, of Essex, Vt., who disappeared in June 2011, authorities said. Keyes confessed to other killings without identifying the victims or saying where their remains were located.

The FBI said Monday that Keyes is believed to have committed multiple kidnappings and murders across the country between 2001 and his arrest in March, often flying to an airport, then driving hundreds of miles before targeting victims.

In interviews with investigators, Keyes detailed extensive planning, including burying caches of weapons at various points across the United States. The FBI says it recovered weapons and items used to dispose of bodies from hiding places just north of Anchorage and Blakes Falls Reservoir in New York.

Keyes told investigators he scoped out potential victims at remote locations including campgrounds and cemeteries. He said few of his earlier cases received media attention until the Currier case, telling investigators that one victim had been found but incorrectly labeled as accidental. The FBI says it does not have a name or location in this case.

Keyes also told authorities he robbed several banks to pay for his travel, using money he made as a general contractor as well.

"There's no indication that he was lying," FBI spokesman Eric Gonzalez said, adding that Keyes' DNA has been put in an FBI database available for other law enforcement agencies to use in their own investigations.

Also on Monday, officials at a news conference in Vermont said Keyes described details of the Curriers killings that had not been released publicly.

Authorities said Keyes flew from Alaska to Chicago, then drove to Vermont and picked the Curriers, a couple in their 50s.

He broke into their home and, in their bedroom, Keyes told police, he bound them with zip ties, forced them into their car and drove them to an abandoned house, where he shot Bill Currier with a gun he brought from Alaska, and then sexually assaulted and strangled Lorraine Currier.

Keyes told investigators he chose the Curriers' home because it had an attached garage, no evidence of children or a dog, and the style of the house clued him in to the probable location of the master bedroom.

Keyes previously lived in Washington state before moving to Alaska in 2007 to start a construction business. He also owned property in upstate New York, near the Canadian border.

Ayn Dietrich, a spokeswoman for the FBI in Seattle, said agents are reviewing unsolved murders across the state to determine whether Keyes might have been responsible.

The FBI has consulted with behavior specialists to develop insight into Keyes' personality.

Their analysis is incomplete, but they know he was a loner who didn't have a clear pattern in selecting victims, who varied in gender and age.

Keyes told investigators that he was "two different people."

"The only person who knows about what I'm telling you, the kind of things I'm telling you, is me," he said, according to a March 30 police recording released by the FBI Monday.

Authorities described Keyes as methodical, in the Currier case taking days to find the perfect victim. He was also thorough in disposing of victims' bodies. Only Koenig's body has been recovered.

The FBI contends Keyes killed Koenig less than a day after she was kidnapped. Her body was recovered April 2 from an ice-covered lake north of Anchorage. Her disappearance gripped the city for weeks.

A surveillance camera showed an apparently armed man in a hooded sweat shirt leading her away from the coffee stand. Koenig's friends and relatives set up a reward fund and plastered the city with fliers.

Prosecutors said Keyes stole the debit card from a vehicle she shared that was parked near her home, obtained the personal identification number and scratched the number into the card.

After killing Koenig, Keyes used her phone to send text messages to conceal the abduction. He flew to Texas and returned Feb. 17 to Anchorage, where he sent another text message demanding ransom and directing it to the account connected to the stolen debit card, according to prosecutors.

Keyes made withdrawals from automated teller machines in Alaska, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas before his arrest in Texas, according to prosecutors. He was charged with kidnapping resulting in Koenig's death. Keyes could have faced the death penalty in her case.

Koenig's family said there was no apparent previous connection between the teenager and Keyes. Reached by phone Sunday, Koenig's father, James Koenig, declined to comment on Keyes' death.

Marilyn Chates, Bill Currier's mother, said police contacted her some time ago to tell her about Keyes' confession and to tell her that they believed the couple's killing was random. Authorities called Chates on Sunday to tell her of Keyes' suicide.

"After some thinking, our family has been saved the long road ahead ? trials, possible plea agreements and possible appeals ? and perhaps this was the best thing that could have happened," she said.

Poor Samantha - this is the story of what happened.

Prior to February 1, 2012, Keyes had selected the Common Grounds coffee stand located on Tudor Road for the site of abduction. He did this after considering other coffee stands, but chose Common Grounds because of its location and because it was open later than other coffee stands.

Keyes had never met or seen Samantha Koenig before. He approached the coffee stand just prior to closing time, wearing a ski mask and ordered a coffee.

Samantha made the coffee and handed it to Keyes; he then pulled out a gun and demanded money. Samantha complied and then Keyes forced himself inside the coffee stand and tied Samantha's hands with zip ties.

He asked where her car was, and she told him that she did not have a vehicle. Keyes then forcibly walked her out of the coffee stand toward Tudor Road.

Samantha broke away from Keyes and tried to run away. Keyes chased her and tackled her to the ground. He put one arm around her and pointed a gun at her body with the other hand; telling her that she needed to cooperate, that the gun had very quiet ammo and that she should not do anything to make him kill her.

They walked across Tudor Road into the parking lot between the IHOP restaurant and Dairy Queen, where Keyes' white truck was parked.

Keyes had previously prepared the truck for the abduction by taking the mounted tool boxes off the bed of the truck, as well as removing the license plates. Keyes then bound Samantha in the truck and drove away.

Keyes drove around town, explaining to Samantha that this was a kidnapping for ransom. Samantha told Keyes that her family did not have much money, and that Keyes was not likely to get much in ransom.

Keyes explained that they will raise money for the ransom by seeking the public's help.

Keyes convinced Samantha that if she cooperated, she would be returned to her family unharmed. Samantha believed Keyes, and tried to talk to him in an effort to convince him to release her.

At some point on the drive, Keyes realized that Samantha did not have her cell phone, which was necessary for his plan to demand ransom money by sending a text message from her phone.

He drove back to Common Grounds and re-entered the coffee stand, leaving Samantha bound in his truck. He retrieved the cell phone and got back into the truck and drove away.

Keyes drove to another part of town where he sent two text messages from Samantha's phone.

The first message was to Samantha's boyfriend, and the second to the owner of Common Grounds.

The text messages made it appear that Samantha just had a bad day and was leaving town for the weekend. Keyes then took the battery out of Samantha's phone.

Keyes asked Samantha for her debit card. Samantha told Keyes that she shared a bank account with her boyfriend, and that his ATM card was in the truck that they shared. Samantha told Keyes where her house was, and gave him the pin number to the ATM card.

Keyes put Samantha in the shed in front of his house, bound her, and turned the radio up in the shed so no one would hear her if she screamed. He also told her that he had a police scanner and would know if she attempted to alert the neighbors.

Keyes drove to Samantha's house and retrieved the ATM card from her truck. While he was at Samantha's, he was confronted by her boyfriend, who yelled at him and then went back in the house to get help. Keyes ran back to his truck and left the area before he could be found. He drove to an ATM machine to test the pin number provided by Samantha. He then returned to the shed.

Keyes then sexually assaulted Samantha and asphyxiated her. Keyes left her in the shed and then went back inside his house, where he packed for a pre-planned cruise that he was taking from New Orleans. He left early that morning (February 2) for the cruise.

Keyes returned to Anchorage on February 17, 2012. He then began preparing a ransom note that demanded money be placed in the account connected with the ATM card.

He went into the shed and retrieved Samantha's body, taking steps to make it appear that she was still alive, and took a Polaroid picture of her tied up.

The photo also showed Keyes' arm holding the Anchorage Daily News from February 13, 2012. He photocopied the photo and, using a manual typewriter he purchased, typed a ransom demand for $30,000 on the back of the photo.

After preparing the note and photo, he placed it in Connor's Bog Park, under a memorial flyer of a dog named "Albert". Then, using Samantha's cell phone, he texted her boyfriend, in substance, that the ransom note was "under Albert" in Connor's Bog Park. The note was recovered by APD.

In the days that followed, Keyes dismembered Samantha's body and drove out to Matanuska Lake, where he cut a hole in the ice and put her body in the lake.

Meanwhile, Samantha's father James Koenig deposited reward money, which had been generously donated by members of the community, into the account connected with Samantha's ATM card.

The plan was to attempt to catch the perpetrator by tracking any withdrawals. ATM withdrawals were made in Anchorage, and then in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. Authorities were able to determine that the perpetrator of these withdrawals was driving a white Ford Focus.

The FBI and the Texas Rangers tracked the ATM withdrawals as they occurred. Ultimately, Corporal Bryan Henry, of the Texas Highway Patrol, pulled over a white Ford Focus matching the description. Keyes was driving.

Henry, along with Texas Ranger Steve Rayburn, obtained enough information during the traffic stop to search the Ford Focus. Samantha's cellular telephone was found in the car, and the ATM card was found in Keyes' wallet.

Attorney: Keyes investigated in death of Celina Cass

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (MyFoxBoston.com/AP) — New details have emerged about a man accused of killing a Vermont couple who died in an apparent suicide in jail.

In interviews with police, Israel Keyes said he enjoyed killing people. He also detailed how he targeted some of his victims in a recorded interview.

"I would let them come to me," said Keyes. "Try to find a remote area that's not anywhere near where you live but that other people go to as well... not much to choose from so to speak but there's also no witnesses, nobody else around."

The FBI released the video in hopes that someone might recognize Keyes and be able to help investigators close out other cases. He is suspected in as many as 15 murders across the U.S.

Investigators said Keyes stayed in New England following the deaths of Bill and Lorraine Currier. Keyes confessed to killing them but was never tried in their deaths.

Keyes was also connected to a high-profile murder in New Hampshire.

Fox 25's Bob Ward confirmed with N.H. senior assistant attorney general Jane Young that Keyes was also being looked at in connection with the death of Celina Cass.

Young said that Keyes' death has no impact on their investigation into the Cass case.

The FBI also released details about the death of an Alaska barista that Keyes was about to be tried for.

Investigators said Keyes sexually assaulted and killed 18-year-old Samantha Koenig the day after he abducted her in February.

Keyes told authorities he then left the woman's body in toolshed for two weeks while he went on a cruise.

Keyes dismembered the woman's body after he returned from the cruise, and disposed of it in a frozen lake north of Anchorage, the FBI said in a release.

Keyes, 34, was arrested in Koenig's death in March in Texas.

His body was found in his Anchorage jail cell Sunday after he apparently killed himself.

Also Tuesday, authorities released video footage of Keyes abducting Koenig, caught by a surveillance camera.

In the video, a man identified as Keyes wears a black mask with eye holes as he climbs through the window of an Anchorage coffee kiosk.

Koenig is seen putting her hands up several times before Keyes leads her out. Police say Koenig was killed hours later. Her body was recovered from the lake in April.

Keyes had faced a March trial in the killing.

I wonder if they will look into the case of nursing student that went missing. The one where the car was found on the side of the road. It was in New England somewhere. I think she was a security guard at a hospital and left work early or something. Emailed her instructor that she was going out of town, but didn't tell anyone else.

I give that kid a few years. He's gonna drink himself to death, or just smash his car into something.
That is unbelievable, and I cannot imagine the amount of guilt. HOLY SHIT!

I like the way that they acknowledge this guys planning. People always act like these things just happen, but there are some fuckers that have a plan and have a code. Whoa.

Nursing student? Those things are everywhere. You can't throw a rock without hitting one.
