Right. Going from Florida to Wisconsin in January is strange.

The disappearance of Joan Risch on October 24, 1961, from her home in Lincoln, Massachusetts, is really interesting. Joan (31) was the mother of two young children and married to Martin Risch.

On the morning of October 24, Joan took her daughter to a dentist appointment, ran errands, and returned home. At 1:00 p.m., a neighbor's child came over to play.

At 1:55 p.m., Risch took her daughter and the neighbor boy to his parents' home and left them at the swingset in the yard, without saying anything to the boy's parents. She told them she would be back, then returned home alone.

At 2:15 p.m., a neighbor saw Risch standing next to her blue sedan outside the family's residence on Old Bedford Road. She was carrying something red and appeared to be dazed.
At 4:15 p.m., Joan's 4-year-old daughter returned home and found her mother gone, telling a neighbor that "Mommy is gone and the kitchen is covered with red paint." Her 2-year-old son was unharmed upstairs in his crib.

Later that afternoon, several motorists reported seeing a disoriented, untidy woman matching Joan's description walking along nearby highways. Some noted she appeared cold or was cradling her stomach, with blood running down her legs.

Risch's husband was in New York on October 24 for a business trip; he had left early that morning. He was questioned by investigators but was cleared of any involvement in her disappearance.

Investigators found blood smears in the kitchen, on the wall-mounted telephone (which was ripped from the wall), and trailing out to her car in the driveway. Drops of blood were also found upstairs.
However, tests showed the total blood loss was only about half a pint, which was non-life-threatening.

A local reporter discovered that in the months before her disappearance, Joan had checked out 25 library books about missing persons, unsolved murders, and staged disappearances, including one detailing a woman who faked her disappearance leaving behind fake bloodstains.

Given her recent library records and the non-fatal amount of blood, some believe she deliberately staged her own abduction to start a new life. Other theories suggest an intruder entered the house, or that Joan suffered complications from a secret, botched illegal abortion and panicked.

No trace of Joan Risch or her remains has ever been found.

Botched abortion was what came to my mind as I was reading. I'd hate to think what people would think if I went missing and they looked at my reading history.

She sure had a great deal of interest in missing persons and how to go missing to start a new life.

Shelly Renee Markley (31) and her husband, John Markley (36), mysteriously disappeared from their home in Bristolville, Ohio, on December 15, 1995.

The Markleys’ five children left for school in the morning. When they returned that afternoon, the house was unlocked and their parents were gone.

A coffee pot in the kitchen was left on and had nearly boiled dry.

Essential personal items—including Shelly’s cigarettes/lighter and John’s wristwatch—were left behind, which was uncharacteristic for them.
The locked gun cabinet and master bedroom safe were both left wide open, with documents scattered on the floor.

Tarps normally covering John’s 1978 Corvette in the garage were missing.

Two hours after the children left for school, a $1,000 personal check written to cash (signed by Shelly) was cashed at a local bank drive-through.

The bank teller recalled seeing John driving their pickup truck, with Shelly sitting between him and an unidentified third man.
The Markleys’ red and silver 1990 Chevrolet pickup truck was later discovered locked and abandoned in a store parking lot 10 miles away.

Inside were their cell phone, a semi-truck tire, and the missing Corvette tarps. The keys were missing.

John’s twin sister had died of cancer two days prior, and calling hours were scheduled for that evening. John was very distraught and had fully intended to attend with his children, making a voluntary departure highly unlikely.

A coworker of John's claimed to hold the couple for a $10,000 ransom, but police determined he was an opportunist attempting extortion and had no involvement in their disappearance.

Sounds like someone decided to rob them. When I read the tarps were missing, I figure they were killed and the tarps were used to roll up their bodies in - but then it said the tarps were found so there goes that.

Right...I initially thought the same thing.
