Country music legend Dolly Parton dead at 80

Legendary singer-songwriter and country music icon Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80.

Her nephew, Brian Seaver, revealed the news in an Aug. 25 Instagram video.

“My name is Brian Seaver, son of Cassie Parton, and I’m representing the Parton and Owens family today announcing the passing of my aunt, Dolly Rebecca Parton Dean, Sister, Sis and Granny to one generation and Gigi to the next,” he says in the video. “This video announcement is something Dolly asked of me years ago, before I fully absorbed it as a future reality. As her head of security for more than two decades, a role my father Larry held before me, I have imagined the heaviness of this moment but haven’t truly felt it until now.”

Parton shared an update on her health on Friday, Aug. 21, acknowledging her recent decline after the March 2025 death of her husband, Carl Dean.

I think she died of a broken heart Its like she gave up when her husband died.

My mom was a geriatric nurse and saw this often. Stress and grief can and will kill you.

ETA she died from a brief battle with cancer.

I admired her so much. Not just for her music but mostly for the good she brought into the world.

She was a beatiful himan being - just a ray of light in this world. I put up a Facebook post about her and focused on her Imagination Library, because of all the wonderful things she has done in her lifetime, that one resonated with me the most. She loved being called The Book Lady. Books are the most important things in the world to me, and I think I'm better for the fact that I had access to all the books I wanted when I was a child (my parents encouraged my reading habit), and she gave that same opportunity to all children.

SHe was truly one of a kind, and she will be missed deeply.

Parton's team confirmed that the star faced a brief battle with cancer and died surrounded by her loved ones, according to NBC. According to People, Parton was hospitalized four days before her death.
