A North Carolina woman who stands accused of killing one of her young children and trying to kill her other child is facing murder charges, according to authorities.

Andrea Morgan Faust, 41, of Durham, was arrested on Friday, February 13, on charges of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder, court records viewed by Us Weekly show.

According to Faust’s arrest warrant, she “unlawfully, willfully, and feloniously did of malice aforethought kill and murder” her one child and “unlawfully, willfully, and feloniously did with malice aforethought attempt to kill and murder” her other child.

The evening of Thursday, February 12, at about 5:25 p.m., Durham police discovered Faust’s two “unresponsive small children”, according to a police news release.

One of her children, believed to be 3 or 4, “went into cardiac arrest” while the other child, believed to be 2, was found “with a slight pulse,” according to the newspaper, which cited police radio traffic stemming from the incident.

“We have a suspect that ran from us,” an officer said over the radio, referring to Faust, the News & Observer reported. “I didn’t know if she was involved. She ran behind the house when I pulled up, so, probably going towards the lake.”

It is unclear how Faust allegedly harmed her two children or why, as police have not shared a potential motive.

The children were taken to the hospital, where one died, WRAL reported.

Faust’s husband, Eric, told the court that their child who survived the alleged murder attempt is expected to fully recover, WNCN reported.

Eric also addressed Faust in court and said that she had been experiencing a mental health crisis on February 13, when she was accused of harming her children.

When it comes to these instances and the age of the children being so young and so close apart in age, it always makes me wonder if it's PPP. The husband mentioned that she was having mental health issues as well. It'll be interesting to learn more about how and why she did this.

A judge ruled a Durham mother charged with killing her young son incapable of standing trial. Andrea Faust had been held at the North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women in Raleigh.

According to court documents, on Monday, she was found hoarding Tylenol pills. She claimed she was keeping the pills for a future suicide attempt.

Faust has been ruled a danger to herself and ordered to undergo intensive psychiatric care.

Court documents reveal she also tried to die by suicide four days later while being held in the Durham County Jail.

That attempt resulted in multiple bone and spine fractures requiring surgery.

She is now at the Central Regional Hospital in Butner, which is a state psychiatric hospital.

Such a terrible situation all around. Shes mentally ill, and a child is dead.

I hope people know she wasnt in her right mind when she did it. And the polices/law in general are really dumb. People that are mentally ill can plan things in advance. What about mentally ill people that commit suicide?

Andrea Faust, 41, was charged with first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder after two of her children, both younger than five, were found unresponsive on Chartwell Court around 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 12.

One was later pronounced dead at the hospital, according to Durham police.

On Tuesday, according to court records, defense attorneys filed a notice stating Faust intends to plead not guilty by reason of insanity and diminished capacity.

Faust was ruled incapable of standing trial on March 25 after she made multiple attempts on her life, including before she was taken into custody and later while she was being held at the Durham County Detention Center.

She was taken to Central Regional Hospital to determine if she gained the capacity to go to trial, according to records.

Records show Faust has returned to the Durham County Detention Center, where she remains without bond.
