Janette MacAusland (49) charged with two counts of murder of her children, Kai (7), and Ella (6)

A woman accused of killing her two young children in Wellesley, MA, is expected to be arraigned on a fugitive from justice charge in Vermont on Monday before she returns to the state to face murder charges.

Janette MacAusland, 49, is charged with two counts of murder in the deaths of Kai MacAusland, 7, and Ella MacAusland, 6, who were found dead in their Edgemoor Avenue home Friday.

Police in Vermont called Wellesley police to perform a welfare check after Janette MacAusland arrived at a Bennington family home highly distraught.
"It was reported that the woman had a visible neck injury and was bleeding," Bennington police said in a press release.

Police attempted to make contact with MacAusland, and during the interaction, police became increasingly concerned for the welfare of her children.

Wellesley police responded to the home and found the children dead inside the residence.

Court documents reveal a Massachusetts woman confessed to strangling her two young children before driving to Vermont and attempting suicide.

Janette MacAusland, 49, appeared via video in Rutland court Monday afternoon, facing a fugitive from justice charge after spending the weekend in the Marble Valley Correctional Facility.

Court documents reveal MacAusland showed up at her aunt’s house in Bennington Friday night, a three-hour drive from Wellesley. MacAusland was allegedly hysterical, covered in blood and had a gash on her neck.

Police say she told her aunt that she killed her kids and tried to take her own life. Her aunt also reported that MacAusland said she drove to the Quechee Gorge Bridge and tried to jump off, but couldn’t.
When Bennington police arrived, they say MacAusland admitted to the murders. Officers say she had a holiday photo of the family with her.

MacAusland will remain behind bars after agreeing to be moved back to Massachusetts.

“She wishes to waive her extradition rights,” said Jeff Rubin, MacAusland’s attorney. “She’s decided that the best thing is to get back to Massachusetts as soon as possible and address these charges.”

A motive is unclear, but a legal analyst says MacAusland and her husband were in the process of getting a divorce and a third party was beginning to investigate as part of the custody process.
