Police seek tips in double murder of Dustin Rose (19) and Samson Campbell (18) in Deland, FL

DELAND, Fla. – DeLand police are asking the public for tips and any information that could help them identify who murdered 19-year-old Dustin Rose and 18-year-old Samson Campbell.

Investigators say they are actively searching for the person responsible and have no one in custody.

Police say they are aware of the social media chatter and community concern surrounding the case. In response, they are increasing patrols and their physical presence throughout DeLand to help residents feel safe.
Last Thursday, police say the bodies of Rose and Campbell were found on a vacant industrial property near the Athens Theater.

The childhood friends had each been shot multiple times. One of their mothers tracked a phone and located them at the scene.

On Saturday, police served a search warrant on Loughton Street connected to the case but have not disclosed how the location relates to the investigation. Authorities say they believe the shooting was an isolated incident.

DeLand police are looking for a 17-year-old in the deaths of two people last week.

Police have issued an arrest warrant for Keyan Jayden Rundell. Rundell is considered armed and dangerous and police are urging the public to call 911 immediately if they see him or know where he is, and do not approach him.

Police did not release any details into why they believe Rundell is responsible for the deaths of 19-year-old Dustin Rose and 18-year-old Samson Campbell.
This is in my backyard. My dentist is right by where they were found.

A 17-year-old charged in the shooting deaths of two DeLand teenagers had a history of prior cases in Orange and Osceola counties, Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said.

The teen, who is not being identified because of his age, was arrested in Ellenton in connection with the July 29 killings of Samson Campbell, 18, and Dustin Rose, 19. He faces two counts of second-degree murder.

Chitwood said in a social media post that the teen had received “years of second chances, dropped charges, and lack of prosecution” in the 9th Judicial Circuit, which covers Orange and Osceola counties.

The sheriff said prior allegations against the teen included aggravated battery, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, carrying a concealed weapon, battery, criminal mischief, vehicle theft, trespassing, drug possession and resisting an officer. Chitwood said those cases dated to 2021 and were dropped, not filed, dismissed or resolved through probation.

Before the DeLand killings, Chitwood said the teen was in a diversion program related to drug possession and disturbing a school function. Court records were not included with the sheriff’s post.

DeLand police said the victims and the suspect knew each other and met on the night of the shooting. Investigators said an altercation occurred before the killings, though a motive had not been established.

If you're old enough to commit adult crimes you're old enough to be charged as an adult. I have never seen a youthful offender suddenly become a model citizen after getting just a slap on the wrist.

I wonder if someone in his family "knows" someone higher up. That is a hell of a lot of different charges in the span of 5 years.

An affidavit written by DeLand police and made public on Friday in the arrest of 41-year-old Daytron W. Etkins — identified as the father of 17-year-old Keyan Jayden Rundell, who's accused of fatally shooting two young men last month in DeLand — reveals a possible motive in the killings.
Rundell was extradited to Volusia County, where he appeared before a judge Saturday morning. During his first appearance, the court ordered that he remain detained in the custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice for 21 days or until further order of the court. All other matters are expected to be addressed in future proceedings.

Etkins was arrested Friday morning in Lake County and is accused of accessory after the fact.

Etkins appeared before a Lake County judge Saturday morning, where his bond was set at $100,000. Under the conditions of his bond, he may not contact his son or any state witnesses. He also will be subject to random drug testing and may not possess firearms.
At latest, DeLand police Chief Jason Umberger has said that a motive for the shooting was still unclear. However, Etkins' affidavit contains statements from a confidential source who told police that Rundell allegedly said he shot Rose and Campbell after they tried to rob him during a drug deal behind Athens Theatre.

The affidavit states a loaded 9mm handgun was located in the crook of one of Campbell's arms when his and Rose's bodies were found behind the theatre, as well as that Rose had a canister of self-defense pepper spray in one of his hands. A plastic bag that was found near the victims contained a green leafy substance that tested presumptive positive for cannabis, the affidavit states.

Hum, I am having a hard time believing this.

He seems like a nice young man.

The 17-year-old accused of fatally shooting two teenagers last month in DeLand will stay behind bars, a judge ruled Aug. 19.

Circuit Court Judge David A. Cromartie said Keyan Rundell will be held in the Volusia County Branch Jail without bond.
Rundell, who is accused of shooting and killing Dustin Rose, 19, and Samson Campbell, 18, walked into his first appearance at the Volusia County Branch Jail courtroom wearing a blue and red striped vest.

In the short interaction with the judge, he spoke once and replied with a curt, “yep,” after being sworn in.

He is now being charged as an adult and faces two counts of second-degree murder with a firearm, tampering with evidence and possessing a firearm underage.
