The 2011 mysterious death of Ellen Greenberg (27)

The death of Ellen Greenberg, a 27-year-old first-grade teacher who died in Philadelphia on January 26, 2011, is a high-profile case centered on an ongoing dispute over whether her death was a suicide or a homicide.

Greenberg was found dead on the kitchen floor of the Manayunk, Philadelphia apartment she shared with her fiancé, Samuel Goldberg, during a major blizzard.

She suffered 20 stab wounds (10 to the back of her head/neck, 8 to her chest/torso, with a 10-inch knife embedded in her chest) and at least 11 bruises.

Goldberg reported breaking through the apartment door’s swing-bar lock after returning from the building's gym and finding the door locked from the inside.

The Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s Office originally ruled her death a homicide following the autopsy.
However, after discussions with the Philadelphia Police Department, who considered the death suspicious but favored a suicide explanation, the Medical Examiner changed the official ruling to suicide.

Forensics experts (including Cyril Wecht and Henry Lee) and independent pathologists hired by the Greenberg family disputed the suicide conclusion.

They noted that several deep stab wounds were inflicted on the back of her neck/head, spinal cord involvement was alleged, and there were no defensive wounds or suicide note.

The apartment was professionally sanitized the day after her death with police permission. Additionally, electronic devices were temporarily removed from the scene by a relative before being handed over to law enforcement.

In 2025, Philadelphia's top pathologist issued a report reaffirming the original official ruling of suicide.

What are your thoughts now given what happened with Perez Hilton?

The multiple stabs with spinal cord involvement are what put me over to the side of murder.

I still think homicide, but I thought suicide was totally out of the question because when someone stabs themselves, the pain will kick in and cause you to stop (after the first couple, at the most). But seeing Perez Hilton do all that and basically not give a shit, makes me realize that when going through a psychotic break you may not even feel the pain.

But yeah, for her I still think it was murder. I mean, that many stab wounds to the BACK of the head? You see it all the time with gunshot wounds - people rule out suicide as soon as they realize the gunshot was to the back of the head. I don't know, I've never tried to stab or shoot myself in the back of the head, but I feel like it would be harder to stab myself than shoot.

And yeah her bf said the door was locked on the inside, but do we know for a FACT it was? It's been a while since I saw the special about this, will have to read up on it again on Monday.

Agree. I also thought the behavior of her fiancé to be strange. He called his family (particularly his uncle who is a prominent attorney in PA) before calling 911. The uncle removed items from the apartment before turning them over the police.

Ooooh I didn't know this! How could they have ruled him out (which I assuming they did since it was ruled a suicide)??? This is insane.

This. ABSOLUTELY this. It's hard for me to believe that she inflicted all of those wounds on her own to begin with, but with a severed spinal cord it's impossible. Unless that it was the last stab wound and this is where they found the weapon located. Otherwise, it's ridiculous to think that she did this to herself.

It's a "Locked Door Mystery" unless you don't believe the boyfriend which......I don't.
