Authorities in New York have identified six people — including four children — who were found dead inside an apartment on Tuesday, June 23.

Amy Steadman, 64, Sarah Myers, 44, and Harper Harmon, 13, Hudson Harmon, 11, Gavin Harmon, 10, and Gracelynn Harmon, 10 were discovered dead inside the residence on Harris Avenue in Mechanicville.

The bodies were discovered after a welfare check to the apartment.

Steadman, who lived at the residence where the bodies were discovered, was Myers’ mother and the children’s grandmother. Myers and her children lived in a different unit at the same apartment building complex.

“Investigators are treating this as a criminal investigation while awaiting the results of the autopsies,” the news release states. “Based on the information currently available, there is no evidence indicating the involvement of any additional individuals. There remains no known threat to the public.”

“Further details regarding the cause and manner of death are expected following completion of the autopsies and review of the findings,” the news release states.

Police said evidence suggests a grandmother was involved in the deaths of her daughter and four grandchildren in Mechanicville, New York, and that they may have been poisoned.

Police were called to the home of Amy Steadman on Harris Avenue for a welfare check on Tuesday after neighbors said they hadn’t heard from the family for several days.

The causes of their deaths remain under investigation, but Mechanicville’s police chief said evidence indicates intentional poisoning by numerous prescription and over-the-counter medications. One of the children also had sharp-force injuries.

The chief said a handwritten note strongly suggests grandmother Amy Steadman was involved, but police have not made a final determination.

Oh that's right, thanks for the remind! Not sure why, but I really thought it was going to be the mom of the kids who took them out and then her own mom. Sounds a bit rare that a grandmother would do this, unless I just can't think of any other incident.

It is odd, for sure. Somewhere I saw that the mom of the children was losing custody. It makes you wonder what was going on for that to happen.

On Tuesday, Mechanicville Police released their most detailed account yet of what investigators believe happened before six family members were found dead inside an apartment on June 23.

The bodies of Sarah Myers, her four children, Harper, 13, Hudson, 11, and twins Gavin and Gracelynn, 10, along with their grandmother, Amy Steadman, 64, were found dead inside Steadman’s apartment on Harris Avenue after a neighbor requested a welfare check.

The investigation concluded that Myers and Steadman began planning the murders days before carrying out the killings on June 10th before taking their own lives.

According to Brady Harmon, the children’s father, June 10th was also the day he expected to speak with his children. He said Myers sent him a message saying the children were sick and unable to participate in their scheduled phone call, promising they would talk the following day.

Investigators now believe the children had likely already died.

“The electronic evidence allowed investigators to reconstruct the murders as they unfolded on June 10th,” said William Rabbitt, Mechanicville Police Chief.

According to Rabbitt, text messages reveal Myers instructed Steadman to administer medication to the children between 10:30 a.m. and noon — hours before the children were scheduled to speak with their father during a 6 p.m. phone call on June 10th.

Police believe the children were lethally poisoned. Investigators also determined that 10-year-old Gavin died from being stabbed to death with a knife and had defensive wounds, suggesting he fought back. The chief said they’re unable to determine which of the two women carried out the knife attack.

He said the most painful revelation was learning investigators believe some of the children were aware of what was happening to them.

“My kids suffered,” Harmon said.

“To poison them and also to stab them– there's a special place in hell for people like that,” said Harmon.

The chief said handwritten notes found inside the apartment by Steadman and Myers allege abuse by Harmon, claiming they did what they did to protect the children.

“One of the earliest pieces of evidence recovered was a handwritten letter signed with Amy Stedman's name.In that letter, the author accepts responsibility for what occurred and states that they believed killing the children was the only way to keep them safe from alleged abuse in Utah,” said Chief Rabbitt.

Investigators also recovered a series of handwritten notes that appeared to have been written by Sarah Myers.

“Although those writings were unsigned, the author repeatedly referred to ‘my babies' and expressed anger towards the Utah County Court system, made allegations that she and the children had been abused while living in Utah and complained that she had been unable to obtain legal representation,” the chief recounted.

“During the investigation, we recovered electronic files belonging to Sarah Myers that included images appearing to document injuries to Myers and some of the children, text messages, and handwritten materials alleging abuse. Those materials were carefully reviewed alongside other evidence recovered during this investigation. While they documented allegations of abuse, investigators were not able to independently verify the circumstances surrounding the alleged incidents,” the chief said.

Harmon rejected all abuse allegations.

He has long believed the six year -long custody battle was at the center of the tragedy.

I have seen that a lot with women killing their children, mostly because of religion or custody cases. But in the latter it seems more like the killer mom or dad doesn't want to share.
