Roland Evans-Freke, 32, is charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter, assault and robbery in the death of Bradley Cole, 69, of Milwaukie in the parking lot of the Ashley Inn the night of May 14, 2024.

Evans-Freke has a long history of mental illness, run-ins with police in Lincoln City and Newport and since his arrest has twice been sent under court order to the state hospital for treatment and evaluation.
Cole and his wife, Debra, were spending the night at the Ashley Inn in Lincoln City after coming to the coast to celebrate their 37th anniversary. Cole was killed about 10 p.m. when he was repeatedly kicked, punched and kneed while resisting Evans-Freke’s attempts to take his dog, according to police and court reports.

A 69-year-old Oregon father on an anniversary trip with his wife was allegedly beaten to death by a trained boxer who wanted the retiree's dog. A lawsuit filed by the man's wife alleged his 30-year-old attacker lived a "violent" lifestyle funded and "encouraged" by his retired Wall Street banker dad, who knew he was "dangerous and unstable."

Stephen Evans-Freke, father of Roland Stephen Evans-Freke, gave his son "substantial assistance and encouragement" by continuing to pay for Roland's lodging, sending him food, sending him money, and other forms of support as his mental health "worsened" and he bounced around Oregon, according to the lawsuit.

The Lincoln City hotel where the attack happened, Ashley Inn & Suites, had also been sued by Bradley Cole's wife, Debra Cole, for his death before agreeing to a settlement last week, according to court records viewed by Law&Crime.

Stephen Evans-Freke, who lives in Ireland, has not responded to the lawsuit or requests for comment, The Oregonian reports.

This is sad all the way around it. Untreated mental illness is a ticking time bomb either for other or the person themselves.

The widow of a Milwaukie man fatally beaten on an anniversary getaway to Lincoln City in 2024 has reached a seven-figure settlement with the Oregon coast hotel where the suspect was staying.

Bradley Cole, 69, of Milwaukie died after a stranger attacked him as he was walking his dog outside the Ashley Inn & Suites.
His wife, Debra Cole, sued the hotel, alleging it failed to take any action to protect its guests from Roland Evans-Freke or remove him from the premises.

Evans-Freke had exhibited violent and mentally unstable behavior at the hotel and had a history of involuntary psychiatric hospitalizations, the lawsuit alleged.
