While walking a dog in Memphis in early March, a person found what appeared to be a skull near a wooded area -- a shocking discovery that has since led to the recovery of what's believed to be the remains of three young children, Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn Davis said Wednesday, calling the case "disturbing" and "heartbreaking."

Authorities are now working to identify the children, who are estimated to be between the ages of three and seven, and the "circumstances surrounding their deaths," Davis said during a press briefing Wednesday announcing the discovery.

Over the ensuing weeks, investigators with the Memphis Police Department's homicide unit and the Shelby County Medical Examiner's Office uncovered additional human remains during a search of the area. The remains are believed to have been there for a "few years," Davis said. No other items beyond bone fragments have been found, she said.

The search is ongoing in what Davis referred to as a crime scene, with approximately 170 personnel involved. Local, state and federal agencies, including the FBI, are assisting, she said.

There are some theories that these could be the Skelton brothers.

The remains of three young children believed to be between the ages of 3 and 7 were discovered in a wooded area in Memphis, Tennessee. Officials believe the remains have been there for years.

On April 23, the mother of the missing Skelton brothers, Alexander, Tanner and Andrew, who were ages 9, 5 and 7 when they disappeared in 2010, released a statement on Facebook following the recent news in Tennessee, saying it’s believed the remains do not belong to her sons.

“However, we understand that the situation is still developing, and we are awaiting official forensic analysis results for confirmation,” Tanya Zuvers said on Facebook. “No matter who the bones belong to, some families’ world will be shattered by the news of their children’s deaths. We as a family continue to pray for answers for ourselves, and pray for the family/families that these precious babies belong to that they find peace in knowing where their babies are.”
