The first 911 call from the Lamplighter Inn, located on the 4000 block of Broadway Street in Eureka, came in on the afternoon of Feb. 21. When Eureka police and Humboldt Bay Fire arrived at the motel, they found two people in a room, apparently suffering from drug overdoses, the Eureka Police Department said in a news release. One was taken to a hospital while the other, a 37-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Four days later, a second 911 call was made at the motel for another possible overdose in one of the rooms, Eureka police said. Police and fire officials returned to the same room where they again discovered two unconscious people. A 36-year-old woman was already deceased, and the other individual was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

During that call, a firefighter displayed symptoms of “mild” carbon monoxide exposure, Eureka police said. Other firefighters began checking the room with gas monitors and discovered "elevated levels” of carbon monoxide, police said. According to police, there was no carbon monoxide detector in the room.

The motel was evacuated and police detectives and PG&E employees were sent to the scene. Local media outlet Lost Coast Outpost obtained a letter from the city through a public records request that showed the motel was shut down on March 3 due to code violations. The letter, issued by the city’s Development Services department, said the motel must have its heating and ventilation systems “inspected and certified as safe,” and all rooms must have “fully functioning carbon monoxide detectors” before it can reopen.

Their causes of death remain under investigation by the Humboldt County Sheriff Coroner’s Office.

Good thing the firefighter noticed the issue while they were there, otherwise it would just keep happening. I'm sure the drugs didn't help, but the likely cause is probably the CO poisoning.

A wrongful death lawsuit filed in April accuses the owners of Eureka’s shuttered Lamplighter Inn of alleged negligence after two people died in the same room five days apart.

The lawsuit centers on the death of Samantha Hanna, who died at the Lamplighter Inn from carbon monoxide poisoning.

The lawsuit follows violations noted during an annual fire inspection last July at the Lamplighter motel. Those issues were corrected a week later, according to the Chief at Humboldt Bay Fire in an earlier interview.

The Panish Law Firm alleges the owners failed to meet safety requirements. “They violated several code sections in not having carbon monoxide detectors, smoke detectors, failing to maintain their air conditioning and heating units properly so that a type of leak like this doesn't happen again,” said Davidi.
