While an Amber alert was issued in the case early Sunday morning, law enforcement identified inconsistencies in the father’s account of events and the timeline he provided.

With the assistance of the Essex County Sheriff’s Office, Ticonderoga Police Department, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, New York State Forest Rangers, and New York State Police K9 and Aviation units, Melina was located deceased in Ticonderoga, New York.

An investigation is underway following the death of a 9-year-old girl, who had gone missing near Lake George, New York.

Hours after an Amber Alert was issued in her disappearance, state police say her body was found Sunday in the town of Ticonderoga, roughly 40 miles northeast of the lake.

The 9-year-old was reported missing in the area of Exit 22 in Lake George by her father just before 10 p.m. on Saturday, state police said.

"The Warren County Sheriff's Office initially led the investigation. As the case progressed, law enforcement identified inconsistencies in the father's account of events and the timeline he provided," state police said in a statement, later adding, "At this time, there is no indication that an abduction occurred, and there is no threat to the public."

I was following this from the time of the Amber Alert. Even though I expected it, I was crushed when the news of her body being found came across. I'm glad he's in custody.

Essex County, NY (WRGB) — The father of a Canadian girl who turned up dead in Ticonderoga after an Amber Alert Sunday has been arrested.

Luciano Frattolin is being held at the Essex County Jail, according to inmate records available through the MobilePatrol Public Safety app.

His daughter, Melina Galanis Frattolin, was reported missing Saturday while the family was in the Lake George area. Law enforcement first reported she was last seen around 7:40 p.m. in a white van on I-87 southbound near exit 22. Further reports changed that time to 9:40 p.m.

Authorities allege that the 45-year-old father murdered Melina and left her body in a remote area where she was later discovered by law enforcement.

Melina's cause of death is pending the results of an autopsy, which is scheduled for later Monday.

New York Police on Tuesday said the autopsy confirmed that Melina Frattolin, 9, died from asphyxia due to drowning and that the manner of death was homicide.

Forest rangers found the girl’s body on Sunday afternoon in the shallows of a pond in Ticonderoga. The criminal complaint said Frattolin concealed her body under a log.

A Lake George hotelier said Wednesday he turned over a potential piece of evidence in Melina’s death while the Amber Alert was still active on Sunday. Rob Gregor, who owns the Sundowner on Canada Street, said an employee at the hotel found an electronic tablet in a flower bed near the hotel’s entrance. Photos of a young girl who resembled Melina were readily accessible on the device, Gregor said.

“The first picture looked almost exactly like her,” Gregor said. He said he had distributed photos of Melina to his staff that morning after he received the Amber Alert. He said the tablet contained additional photos, including posed pictures and selfies. Gregor said he could not recall seeing photos of adults on the device.

The Canadian man accused of killing his 9-year-old daughter and hiding her body in Essex County, New York, wants the statements he made to police and evidence from his cellphone thrown out before his trial.

New court documents obtained by Hearst-owned The Albany Times Union revealed text messages that Frattolin sent on the day of Melina's disappearance, as well as the timing of the 911 call and photos from traffic cameras that don't line up with his story.

Frattolin previously pleaded not guilty to a murder charge and has been in custody ever since. His trial is set to begin in April.

A judge will issue a decision as to whether the texts are admissible later this month.

Monday marked one year since Melina Frattolin’s body was found in Ticonderoga, and it was also the first day of the trial for Melina’s father Luciano Frattolin, who has since been charged in her death.

Court wrapped after five jurors were picked. Judge Coffinger read aloud a list of over 50 witnesses that could potentially be called in for the trial, including investigators, state troopers, forest rangers and a doctor.
