I know the holidays are coming so I may be able to get a job in retail. The only problem is one of my kids is out of school for a week in November and two weeks in December. I don't know what workplace would be fine with me taking off that long unless they can let me work late.

There's a local chicken wing place that is hiring, but I don't think I can deal with the high school kids that come in after school. I had one kid harass me when I was trying to get food.

Maybe instead of retail you could look at front desk at a hotel, or dentist, or vet office something like that? Food service can be sooooo stressful. What do you do now? Are they flexible when your kids are off? It might make sense to aim for the new year if they are.

Im sorry CC, since you have worked there for awhile, wouldnt they be okay with the 3 weeks off. Unless your idiot MIL can watch him.

I have an issue with my husband and Im not sure what to do. My heart is literally broken for him. Hes been a manager of the window installers at home depot for 5 years. His installers love him, and he works hard. He has applied for a higher position 3 times, and was rejected. He trained his boss. She is the worst. She refuses to address issues that would take 5 minutes to resolve, wont call customers, always works from home because she has small kids. His installers complained to the higher ups about her, and nada. My husband applied for a higher up job on monday, and was supposed to hear back today. Now the person anouncing it is on vacation. They didnt even tell him he didnt get it. He thinks hes a failure, passed up 3 times. I dont know what to do for him.

That sucks! If I were him I would start looking at other jobs. Being at his current job for that long, he should be a great candidate for a new place.

I am sorry, as I know that is frustrating for your husband (and for you). Has he taken any leadership training or done something to improve his leadership acumen? If he wants to remain at Home Depot, maybe he can see about investing in himself while we waits for the perfect opportunity to land in his lap. Honestly, maybe the other roles were not for him and there is something better coming his way.

Thats what he wants to do.

He is a manager now, and he has done extra training and has trained his boss. I think he may be to blunt, and it may rub people the wrong way. But he did train his boss (he applied for her job, so that stung)
That is a good idea though. I hope you are right.

Unfortunately, we have no family close by. Everyone lives 3.5 hours away. We may see if my mom will come down since she gets two weeks off around Christmas.

I agree with something better is coming your husband's way. My husband interviewed with a company that works on atms. They really liked him except they said he didn't have quite the level of experience they want and he lives too far away. That position is still open.

My husband ended up finding a better job with a top global company. They liked his background and where he's located.

I'm sure your husband will find somewhere better. Can he work at Lowe's or is there a non-compete clause?

Im sorry you dont have family near by to help.

Ironically, he worked for Lowe's for several years.

Hes been applying to random companies here and there, with no bites.

    There was no warning, none.
I had just finished using the bathroom. I turned the tap on to wash my hands. No water. I freaked. I'm a big, huge germaphobe and this was my worst nightmare come true.
I did have bottled water to wash my hands, but still. My landlord should keep up with local planned outages.

Ang, I'm so sorry to hear that regarding your Husband. I know how that feels. I can't tell you how many times I've had to train my own boss, but I was getting passed over because I'm a Woman.

I say that he keeps a look out for something new and the right thing will come along. They have to understand that if they want loyalty from their staff that they can't treat them like that. They'll see the error of their ways when he's gone.

I am the same way and am a huge germaphobe to the point that I literally do not touch anything when out in public (my husband touches things for me ). Is it back on yet?

Same. Only one other person here in the office has been here longer than me (I've been here over 16 years) and yet I make the least out of everyone. I bet if a man was in my position his paycheck would be bigger than mine, it's bullshit. Plus, I took on running a second company and I had to ASK for a raise when that happened.

I thought your father owned the company you work for, or am I mistaken?

Yep, he does. Along with the other company he bought that I run the office for, too. Probably a reason I am underpaid, he would rather pay others more to "keep" them. The only reason I get as to why they get more than me is because they are "on call" and have to answer the phone for customers 24/7.

I've been tempted to leave when I search for jobs that have less work for more money than I am making now, but it's always a gamble, I could be laid off or the company could shut down, you never know. I know this job is secure (for the most part. We do very well.) Plus, if I left it would totally screw over everyone who works here and I just can't do that. And not to brag, but I am very good at what I do, and it would be too much for a new person to take on.

Don't compare yourself to other employees at your work, compare yourself to employees who do the same type of job you do at other work places. Apples to oranges comparisons don't really mean much because they may truly be doing something that would cost a lot in other fields. Collect job listings as evidence. If you do a lot of jobs that are outside of the scope of work that your position typically does, collect the salary for those types of employees too. If you are doing more than the typical for your position you should be making a comparative salary to others in your position, plus additional.

Thanks guys! It's funny because my dad makes comments about where I live (like it's a shithole) and I should own a house in a more upscale neighborhood. It's like, motherfucker you know my paycheck, give me more money then but really, I don't need to live in a fucking mansion, I like my house, and the neighborhood isn't THAT bad. There are way worse places, and I'm not stuck up like he is.

Other than the pay, I really like it here because I have some amazing coworkers, and we are like family. I have fun, we are always joking around, so I am lucky it isn't some stiff, fancy dressing, stuck in a cubicle quiet and boring place. It could be worse.

I am done bitching for now because I am happy just to have a job, I know a lot of people are struggling and I don't want to seem like a bitch and ungrateful lol.

My son has been going to the Boys & Girls Club after school for a couple of years. He suddenly decided during this past school year that he wanted to try the after-school program at his school. (He said he hated B&G Club despite his best friend being there.) I registered my son for the school's after-school program to start this fall, and I paid the registration fee. Now, tonight, my son is telling me he doesn't want to go to the new after-school program. He wants to stay at B&G Club. He hates the school's after-school program. I want to strangle him.

Yep been there, dont you love it? You pretty much have to make decisions for them, and you are the bad guy no matter what you choose.

Has he even done the after school program before?

Through the school? No. The only reason he told me he wants to go is because they draw. My son can draw at B&G Club.
