Conrad Ashcraft (3) found dead at Poppy's Playhouse Daycare in Missouri

The St. Francois County Sheriff’s Department and Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education are investigating after a three-year-old with special needs died at a Park Hills daycare last Friday.

According to St. Francois County Sheriff Jeffrey Crites, the death happened Friday, May 16, at Poppy’s Playhouse 2. A memorial filled with balloons, toys, and flowers for Conrad Ashcraft now surrounds the daycare.

“He was a beautiful child. He enjoyed being free and living his sweet little life,” Lacey Hardie, Conrad’s aunt, said.

The Park Hills Police Department contacted county authorities on Friday, May 16, after Ashcraft was found dead at the daycare.

The daycare is owned by a member of the Park Hills City Council. As a result, city police have deferred to county investigators to ensure transparency.

Sheriff Crites said the investigation is ongoing. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday.

A community is still searching for answers after a three-year-old died at a Park Hills daycare in May.

About six weeks later, pieces of a memorial stand outside of Poppy’s Playhouse 2 with signs demanding, “Justice of Conrad.”

“We as a family thus far have not had any updates from anybody,” Lacie Hardie, Conrad Ashcraft’s aunt, said.

Conrad was found dead at Poppy’s Playhouse 2 on May 16.

A state licensing inspection determined that Conrad was laid down for a nap under an 18-pound weighted blanket. He was found dead about four hours later. But the St. Francois County coroner will not say if that is what caused the death. He told FOX 2 that he is still waiting for autopsy and toxicology results, but we are “getting close.”

The daycare’s owner spoke with FOX 2 off the record but will not go on the record due to pending litigation.

Months after officials began investigating the suffocation death of 3-year-old Conrad Ashcraft at a Park Hills day care, a grand jury has indicted a day care employee on murder charges.

Tiffany Hedrick was indicted Thursday on charges of second-degree murder, child abuse resulting in death, and armed criminal action. She was arrested the same day and is being held at the St. Francois County Adult Detention Center without bond.

Conrad was found dead under a blanket when his mother came to pick him up from Poppy's Playhouse day care in Park Hills.

His mother has since filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the day care, claiming Hedrick forced Conrad to sleep by applying weight pressure to his body, causing suffocation. Conrad was nonverbal with autism.

Google is your friend. Google will tell you what age a child should be before you put weighted objects on them. My mother in law bought a weighted blanket for my baby. I didn't need Google to tell me that putting a heavy object on my daughter was a bad idea. Mother in law is stupid. Don't be like mother in law.
