A Cal Fire captain was found stabbed to death inside of her San Diego County home on Monday and authorities are still searching for the suspect.

Deputies were dispatched to the 20200 block of Rancho Villa Road in Ramona at around 9 p.m. on Monday after learning of an assault that happened in the area, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Office.

Upon arrival, they found the victim suffering from multiple stab wounds, deputies said. Despite attempted life-saving measures the woman was declared dead at the scene.

On Tuesday, the victim was identified by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, as Rebecca Marodi, 49, a 30-year firefighting veteran who was stationed in French Valley just north of Temecula.

Thus far into their investigation, Sheriff's Homicide Unit detectives have yet to identify a suspect or motive in the incident, but they suspect that Marodi "knew the perpetrator and are treating this case as a potential domestic violence incident."

Newly revealed details from an arrest warrant describe the final moments of a California fire captain found fatally stabbed in her California home last week. Authorities allege her wife carried out the killing before fleeing across the border to Mexico.

Cal Fire Capt. Rebecca “Becky” Marodi was discovered with multiple stab wounds in her home in Ramona on Feb. 17, according to an arrest warrant filed in San Diego County Superior Court Friday.

Marodi’s mother called 911 around 9 p.m., according to the warrant. Deputies arrived within minutes, but Marodi was pronounced dead at the scene about 15 minutes later.

According to the arrest warrant, surveillance footage from the couple’s home captured part of the attack. At 8:08 p.m., the warrant says, Marodi is seen running across the patio, pursued by her wife, Yolanda Marodi, also known as Yolanda Olejniczak.

“Yolanda! Please… I don’t want to die,” Rebecca Marodi was heard pleading, investigators said. Olejniczak is said to have responded, “You should have thought about that before.”

The surveillance footage shows Olejniczak holding a knife, apparent blood visible on her arms, ordering Marodi back inside the home, the warrant says. Marodi is heard repeatedly asking Olejniczak to call 911 before the two move out of frame. It was the last time Marodi was seen alive on camera, the warrant says.

Minutes later, according to the warrant, Olejniczak was seen on the front door camera loading pets, luggage and belongings into a silver crossover SUV. By 8:22 p.m., she had left the home, investigators said.

Homeland Security records show her vehicle crossing into Mexico less than an hour later, the warrant said.

An acquaintance of Olejniczak contacted investigators with the contents of a text message Olejniczak sent her the day after the killing, according to the warrant.

“Becky came home and told me she was leaving me, she met someone else, all the messages were lies,” Olejniczak wrote, according to the warrant. “We had a big fight and I hurt her… I’m sorry.”

Marodi sustained multiple stab wounds to her neck, chest and abdomen, authorities said.

Olejniczak, who remains at large, was sentenced in 2004 after pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the fatal stabbing of her then-husband, serving time in prison until 2013, according to court records.

In a statement, Cal Fire honored Marodi’s decades of service and mourned her death.

“Captain Marodi served over 30 years with Cal Fire, primarily in Riverside County, but also serving time in San Bernardino and San Diego Counties,” the agency said. “The tragic loss of Captain Marodi is mourned by her family, friends and her Cal Fire family.”

Wife of slain California fire captain is arrested in Mexico on suspicion of murder

San Diego (AP) — A month after an official with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection was found slain at her home, the woman’s wife has been arrested in Mexico on suspicion of murder, authorities said.

Investigators had named Yolanda Olejniczak Marodi as the prime suspect in the Feb. 17 stabbing death of Cal Fire Capt. Rebecca Marodi, 49, in Ramona, near San Diego.

Olejniczak Marodi was arrested Saturday at a hotel in the city of Mexicali, just south of the US border, according to officials in Mexico. Mexican state security agents transferred her to US marshals and she was returned to the United States, according to a statement from the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office.



It wasn’t known Sunday if Olejniczak Marodi, 53, has an attorney.

She will be booked into custody in San Diego, and the investigation into Marodi’s killing remains ongoing, the statement said.

Marodi, a decorated captain with the state agency, was part of the battle against the Eaton fire in January near Los Angeles. She and Olejniczak Marodi had been married for just over two years.

Olejniczak Marodi was previously convicted in the fatal stabbing of her then-husband, James Joseph Olejniczak, the Los Angeles Times reported. She pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter after the stabbing in 2000 and served nearly a decade in prison.

Olejniczak Marodi had been at large since Marodi’s death and had driven into Mexico the night of her death, according to the statement from the sheriff’s office. She was seen on surveillance video earlier in the evening “arguing with Rebecca and physically assaulting her” before leaving the house, the statement said.

Home security footage from a surveillance camera at the couple’s home depicted a brutal scene on the evening of Feb. 17, according to an arrest warrant obtained by the Times. A woman believed to be Marodi can be heard in the video screaming “Yolanda! Please … ! I don’t want to die!” before appearing on video with blood on her back, according to the warrant.

The footage shows Olejniczak Marodi packing items into a silver SUV, which is seen about an hour later crossing the border into Mexico, according to the warrant.

A woman accused of fatally stabbing her wife, a veteran state firefighter, at their Ramona home and then fleeing to Mexico, was ordered Tuesday to stand trial for murder.

Yolanda Marodi, 54, is accused of killing her spouse of two years, Cal Fire Capt. Rebecca "Becky" Marodi, at the couple's Rancho Villa Road home on the night of Feb. 17, 2025.

According to testimony from a preliminary hearing held Tuesday in El Cajon Superior Court, the 49-year-old victim sustained 23 stab wounds to her neck, chest and abdomen.

Rebecca Marodi, who had worked for the state firefighting agency for more than 30 years, died at the scene.

According to an arrest-warrant declaration filed by a detective with the San Diego County District Attorney's Office, Rebecca Marodi had sought to leave the marriage shortly before she was killed.

The day after the slaying, the court document asserts, the suspect sent someone a text message stating, "Becky came home and told me she was leaving me, she met someone else, all the messages were lies. We had a big fight and I hurt her ... I'm sorry."

The warrant declaration states that footage from a Ring camera captured images of Rebecca Marodi fleeing their home as her wife chased her.

The video footage was not played in court, but Sheriff's Homicide Det. Jessica Ricca testified that in her review of the video, the victim can be heard calling out for her mother, to which Yolanda Marodi responds, "She's not here."

The two go out of frame for some time, and when they appear again, Rebecca Marodi appeared to be "covered in blood," Ricca testified.

Yolanda Marodi allegedly crossed the U.S.-Mexico border about an hour after the killing.

Mexican authorities arrested her just over a month later near a hotel in the Ferrocarril neighborhood of Mexicali, according to the San Diego County District Attorney's Office.

She remains in custody without bail.

It's the second time Yolanda Marodi has been found guilty of killing a spouse.

Yolanda Marodi appeared in El Cajon's San Diego Superior Court and pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for the stabbing that left 49-year-old Rebecca Marodi dead in their shared Rancho Villa Road home.

She is expected to be sentenced to 36 years to life in prison on Sept. 2.
