Yeah, I don't get the phone thing...you all are making some great comments on it. Hmmm she made the call to his voicemail. Jail calls are normally collect calls but I think they can buy phone minutes from the commissary. Have to check that out as it might be the answer to that. I'll look and let you guys know

Does anyone else get the sinking feeling that Coconut was on Jodi's side after all??

I dont think its a coincidence for an active poster to suddenly vanish post verdict

Jail calls' Link to Maricopa Sheriff info on inmate phone calls. There are a couple ways for them to make outbound calls. Prepaid is one of them or for the other option would be for Troy to have set up a prepaid account to accept her calls. Link says 3 way calls are a NO NO -- they won't go thru at all.

Not sure if it is just me but has Jodi thrown her attorneys under the bus?
We have all been suspecting that Nurmi has just been going through the motions in her defense. I bet he knows she planned it all and I don't think he liked her on the 10th day either. Do you think JW and Nurmi will go on with the defense strategy they have had all along and push through cause it is their job? OR do you think they will throw HER under the bus?
Listening to her say in the interview that she wasn't all that happy with her defense and that Nurmi would not allow her evidence of multiple bruises from abuse or her witnesses they would not allow. And the (oh give me a break) photo of Travis acting out his pedo fantasy pretending to be a priest of the Catholic Church going after a little boy and she photographs it??? <major eye roll>
She talks in that interview in denial she was just found guilty of M1. It's like she is still acting as if she is on the stand with hopes of being found innocent. Not gonna happen Jodi.

Yes, but I believe this is cancelled out by the fact that (per Travis) a 5 y/o can hold the camera better than she can. Clearly a pissing contest as she tried to prove she was more worthy of his affection than a young child was (ugh, I hate this woman so much).

If he was, at least he was among the more rational and articulate Jodi supporters. A wicked wit, though, not limited to either side's expense.

I get a sinking feeling about Coconut alright. I am hoping he is ok. He disappeared on verdict day. Seems odd. My guess is he liked playing devil's advocate. But it is odd the last time we saw him was verdict day.

Sorry about my lack o' quote, damn mobile!

I was so very grateful for Coconut and Crickets for providing some alternate theories. There are a few others, too, and I apologize for not naming them specifically. This case had some very interesting twists and I tried to give both sides a chance to prove their position. That was made A LOT easier with people who don't think like I do.

So, I don't think Coconut supported Hodi but I do think he wanted justice on both sides. JA had an amazing defense with, IMO, a minimum of grounds for appeal. I think it is typical that she is now blaming the defense for the verdict and what "they" didn't do for her. Say what you like, Nurmi and Wima really put out for JA and she fucked them with no kisses. That interview was terrible on so many levels, but for her DT, they are trying to save her life and she says that shit? No one may like how much that defense cost the taxpayers of AZ, but they earned it. These are big time attorneys and honestly, litigation costs a lot of money, time, and effort. To hear that bitch complain about how her defense didn't do this or that makes me fucking ill. I didn't like a lot of the tactics and the behavior was crazy, but I know Hodi came up with the scenario that set up her self-defense shit. I am sure her attorneys think she's a lying sack of crap, but they worked hard and gave her every opportunity. Personally, I think Wilma is going to write a tell-all and then we will know what she really thought about Stabby sitting next to her all those day!

So many posters just think Nurmi is a terrible human being for going into the private practice defending people accused of sex crimes. I want to point out that innocent people need lawyers too! The accusation of pedophilia or rape can absolutely destroy a person and there are A LOT of men (and women) whose careers and lives are ruined Just by the accusation.

Just one more thing, I was an administrator at a middle school and one of my male teachers was accused of molesting a young lady in his class. This teacher stayed after school to work with a lot of students and this girl was one of them. Her home life wasn't good and she was really behind in school. This teacher never got paid for helping her or any other student, he did it because he wanted to help. This student accused him of molesting her and, of course, I put the teacher on leave while the investigation was going on. The press found out (because the girl's mother went to the paper) and it was a fucking clusterfuck. There was NO evidence to collaborate her story and , eventually, we found out the girl made it up. She just wanted some attention and, boy, did she get it. This man's career and life were left in shambles and he and his partner (yep, he was gay) left the area. He was an amazing man and an amazing teacher but his mistake was helping out a student.

I am absolutely aware that sometimes it doesn't work out that way. There are bad people in this world who do despicable things, but I think of that teacher all the time. An accusation is enough when it comes to certain subjects, but the press never apologized to that man for "outing" him. He was convicted in the eyes of students and parents and I totally understand why he got out. But, he didn't do anything wrong and I am glad there was an attorney who was willing to defend him. He needed a lawyer and he was totally innocent....

Sorry for the long post and for being a little off-topic.

The only time parole is possible in M1 is if the convicted person was under 18 when the crime was committed.
Thank you for such an idiot proof answer.

Mitigation phase will be a time for family and friends to make their impact statements and this will be VERY emotional. In that lame-ass interview, Hodi used that manipulation tactic of "poor me" saying that her attorneys told her she has no mitigating factors. This is just a lie and, if you notice, she backs away from the direct question of "Kirk Nurmi said that?"
They will use things like her age and how she doesn't have a criminal past, but I think a big focus will be how she might be able to serve other inmates, like teaching a class or helping them with coloring.

No matter what they say on questionnaires, jury members have a tough time handing down the DP. That cannot be an easy decision for anyone and it shouldn't be. I do think they will hand down the DP though, and they will refer to the cruelty of the murder and the overall impact Travis' death has had on his family and friends.
Let's make a list of subjects she could teach to other inmates. To start...journaling...

NO, NO, NO, Hopefully Wednesday will be a great day for Justice for Alexander. Jodi's attempt to sabotage her M1 conviction backfired. Think positive folks. There will be a new, broken Jodi to see.

It wasn't the verdict at all. This started before the verdict came down. They could still be deliberating but Coconut wouldn't be here & if you go back through the thread to the start you'll see he's not the only one missing. The verdict just happened to coincide with his attempts to move to another thread to have discussions away from the cries of "Jodi supporter, go back to JAII". He was ALREADY being called a Jodi supporter for fuck's sake! What possible difference could it have made if any of us who were labelled JAII members or trolls had put our hands up & said "yep"? We were copping shit every time we spoke against the group voice anyway.

Aside from that, why the fuck would someone who believed in her innocence turn up on a forum & repeatedly say she was GUILTY?? That's really nutty. What possible point could someone have for doing that? Could you guys go to JAII & spend hours, everyday, for MONTHS chatting & being friendly with people who you believed REALLY think Travis was a paedophile? Could you do it? Could you listen to that shit & not lose it? NO FUCKING WAY could any of you do that for months. & remember, the flipside of that (&what you're saying about Coconut) is someone who BELIEVES 100% that Jodi IS innocent being able to be friendly with a group of people who attack & degrade her & wish her painfully dead on an almost minute by minute basis. Can you see a real Jodi supporter being able to consistently do that goodnaturedly for HOURS , every day of every week FOR MONTHS?

If I'd come to MDS for this trial I would have given up & left too. He took all the smites & insults, comments about gullibility & stupidity, accusations of being a secret Jodi supporter, he took ALL of it goodnaturedly & if someone with an opposing view made a good point he conceded it. When it became clear that this thread was completely uninterested in & unwilling to allow some discussions, he moved those discussions away so that no-one here had to so much as "scroll past & ignore it".

I wasn't here as long as many, but I know I thought people here had built a connection with Coconut despite their differences. I'm sure he thought he'd made friends here on an "agree to disagree" kind of basis. He respected the opinions of others, he conceded their points when they had merit - always. I'm sure he thought people would at least have enough respect for him to not follow him to another thread & put a stop to conversations that he had deliberately taken elsewhere for the express purpose of avoiding the very shit that stuck to his heels & followed his every attempt to escape it.

People were often told "if you don't like it, scroll past it" & it was said frequently. My guess is that he thought this thread had formed into a big friendly group & that taking the unpopular conversations away from this thread would keep everybody happy. Crickets once told Coconut that he must have a much thicker skin than an anyone else who'd tried voicing a differing opinion in this thread, because so MANY people had left never to return - we lost another one after a nasty post 2-3 days ago. I think he tried to have a thicker skin. I think he really tried, but I think the response to his thread was the straw that broke the camel's back. I hope I'm wr ong. I hope he's just lost internet access or something. That's what I hope. But if Coconut left us by choice, it absolutely was NOT through disappointment in the verdict. He had every right to pissed right off & it's not only the handful of "JA thread trolls" who have said so.

I really hope he comes back. It's not the same without him & I hope he comes back & sees that every now & then his thread IS getting exactly the kind of discussion he'd been hoping for. But if he really never returns, then Crickets is right, that little thread should be renamed the Coconut Memorial.

A friend of mine sent me the link for this 48 hour case. It sounds so much like Jodi in some ways. This woman bought gas cans and drove hundreds of miles to kill her husband and his new girlfriend.

They talk about the turned off cell phone and gas cans at around the 12 minute mark.

Credit the jury for looking past style and these shortcomings, and sticking to the evidence to get it right.

The jury probably disregarded the entire defense testimony as a whole because it was built on Jodi's lies. That leaves the crime scene photos, autopsy results, the hard evidence of her planning. The objective stuff that we can't dispute. I think there can be some doubts about her plans but to the jury those doubts were not reasonable.

All the popular kids are doing it!

I still think that this case was a slam dunk for any moderately competent prosector, but Juan at times verged dangerously close to losing the plot (much to my entertainment). If Jodi had not lied so much, had not changed her story so much, had gotten an attorney right after her arrest, had argued for heat of passion, had been more likeable, Martinez would have had much less margin for error. Fortunately for us he the jury gave him a pass on his mistakes and shit personality.

Absolutely. He's got me fascinated by the story of Phineas Gage. So much so that I've ordered a couple of books. It will remind me of him & watching the Jodi trial via MDS anyway everytime I read them, but just to be sure I'll print a copy & stick it in the front cover. If not for Coconut I never would have seen those amazing old sepia photographs - & I really do love photo's from that era, knowing the story behind them made it extra cool.

Nope. Trial is over for the majority of people and they've moved on to other things.
