Okay, I don't know which is lulzier, the faux Katie Wick interview last night or this masterpiece.

I'd rep you again but apparently you amuse me too often and I'm not allowed. Le sigh.

Back about the trial...My work is interfering with my watching the trial, dammit. Did LaViolette have another urgent need to leave the stand for a call of nature again today?

If she's this nervous NOW with the softball questions being lobbed at her from Wilmot, she seriously might want consider wearing some Depends from Martinez's cross examination because she'll most likely be shitting herself once he gets a hold of her.

The defense can't make unfounded statements without consequences. The prosecution tries hard to undermine anything the defense says. We've seen it happen already, and it's hurt the defense case. Speak out in court at your own risk!

WOW...Dr. Drew really worked up...and he's right...she has mental health issues and did not get help and now she has to pay the price....and yes I understand you cannot "force" someone to get help for mental issues, but now someone is dead at her hands and now she has to pay the price for that

It's my impression that when Mama Arias speaks of Stabby friends calling her and telling her that she needs help that that occurred when Stabby was a teenager and sneaking out all of the time.

    Anyone else?

First time I heard that tape I thought Mama Arias said "freaking out" but it's "sneaking out"

The female speaking blames mom for not dragging her to get help. How could she? Jodi was busy moving in and out of relationships for 10 years and was not home!

I'm totally with you on this one, Sneakers.

I heard "sneaking out," too, but then whatever site I was watching the video on had subtitled it to "freaking out," so I assumed I heard incorrectly.

And, yes, the woman was very upset and not terribly coherent, but I was confused about just when these friends were calling her. In the end after listening to it a couple of times, I *THINK* she meant when Jodi was in Arizona. I remember she commented very soon thereafter that if they could get her back home or closer to home they would be able to help her or something like that.

But I'm still not certain if it was "sneaking out" or "freaking out" (I initially heard "sneaking" and so did my husband), and I'm not quite sure of the timeline of her friends calling the mom, either.

I actually went back and forth over this on my DVR and I hear "freaking out" at first I couldn't tell.

I'm actually pretty surprised that this particular diary entry did not come in during JM's cross of Jodi. This would have been solid proof that her story of finding a gun in Travis' closet while cleaning in 2007 was a lie.
Maybe its something JM is saving for rebuttal but it seems like that would be something that needed to come out already.

I have pointed out that there are numerous, reasonable explanations for Travis's continued relationship with Jodi. If you have done any research into male abuse victims and male stalking victims, you would see the pattern that Travis displayed is not all that unusual for someone who is in an abusive, stalking relationship.

The highlights of the research for you:

--Many victims of abuse, regardless of gender, worry that their abuser will harm themselves. (Jodi likes to threaten suicide, doesn't she?)
--Many victims of abuse stay in a relationship because they think that the person will change.
--In the case of male victims of abuse, they will often stay because the abuse is not always physical, so they do not recognize or understand that the behavior exhibited is abuse.
--Many men fear seeking help because of what you keep repeating over and over -- disbelief and scorn that a man could be abused and/or stalked, and somehow not be able to get away.
--Many abuse victims attempt to leave an average of seven times before they are successful at breaking off the relationship. Despite what you keep repeating over and over, it's not that easy to just get away from an abuser or stalker.
--Leaving an abuser increases the chance for a violent confrontation. It is the most dangerous time for an abuse victim. More women of DV are killed in their attempts to leave their abuser than any other time. Male abuse victims that are murdered by females are far less common, but they do occur.

As a man, Travis would have faced countless difficulties in accessing help for abuse or stalking. According to my Google-fu skillz, According to the NVAW survey, slightly more than half of female stalking victims reported their stalking to the police (2). Overall, only 13% of female stalking victims reported that their cases were criminally prosecuted. Police were more likely to arrest a stalker when the victim was a woman (2). Police were also more likely to refer female than male victims to victim service agencies for support and counseling (2). http://www.musc.edu/vawprevention/re...stalking.shtml

Here are a list of reasons why abuse victims may not leave: http://www.cobar.org/index.cfm/ID/21090 Note that not all of the reasons listed apply to every single case of abuse. These are just the many, many reasons why victims don't always leave.

One link I found even talked about "Sex as a reward, sex withheld as punishment". If the man is good, and does what his abuser wants, he will be rewarded with sex. If he displeases his abuser, sex will be withheld. The same website even talked about how men can be victims of rape. They may not want sex, but they end up having it just to appease their abuser.

One link from the UK had victim statements. I think there were like 9 of them. At least five of those cases, the woman turned the male in for abuse, even though he had never attacked her. In at least three cases, the male was attacked physically, and pushed the female away, and was arrested for abuse.

I could tell you more, but you can google as well as I can.

That is the one key that people should understand here: We don't know what form of coercion Stabby was using on Travis. Sex as a reward seems very likely. She could have threatened him with the phone sex tape. She could have threatened to turn him in for abuse. She may have said that she would tell people that he raped her.

FWIW, I did find it immensely frustrating to find resources for male victims. Most pages are geared towards women. Another reason why many males don't seek help is because they don't know where to go...and they may not even recognize abuse for what it is.

One last thing: Travis did tell a friend about Jodi. And the friend didn't think Jodi was a big threat. It's not his fault about Travis's death, but it just shows you that Travis may have been looking for assistance, and was told not to worry about it. He may have felt that if he approached law enforcement, they would have just thought he was crazy.

So anyways, I posted some stuff for people to read about abuse in case you're too lazy to look it up yourself. If you still have questions, I suggest you just trot out into the Interwebs and look for information on abuse. The stories will sicken you, and hopefully make you think twice before you judge an abuse victim.

I am fully aware of the intricacies of stalking and abusive behavior. I was stalked. I got away because I stopped engaging with my stalker. Thankfully, I did not have a sexual addiction issue with my stalker. Nothing I have said is judging an abuse victim. Please stop distorting my words to suit your beliefs. It won't fly with me or anyone else. Many thanks.

Quote of the day from the DV victim/survivor on Nancy Grace:

"That's what perpetrators do... they can tell a lie far better than a victim can tell the truth..."

she also also said that AL is (literally) making herself sick by making excuses for JA, essentially making excuses for the batterer.

Very much agree. I don't understand why only the accused get "fairness"...where is the fairness for the victim???

You can't force adults to get mental health help they don't want unless they are far, far more disturbed than Stabby. Sad but true. You can nag them and cajole them and do your best to try and get them to voluntarily get help, but you can't force them. Getting someone committed is extremely difficult. Keeping them committed is almost impossible.

And even if they convinced Stabby she needed help and she agreed (highly unlikely), how was this "help" going to be paid for?? Stabby was unemployed and had a history of bouncing from one minimum wage job to another, quite possibly with no health insurance benefits even when she was employed. Her parents don't appear to be wealthy, and she is too old to be on their health insurance anyway, if they even have coverage for themselves. So who was going to pay for any "help" Stabby might receive?

There is very little money for uninsured mental health coverage available in the USA. Plus, the pendulum has swung way too far into the mentally ill persons rights to refuse treatment being the be all and end all that governs everything. They have a right to refuse treatment. They have a right to refuse medication.

My friend has a son who is very, VERY disturbed. He is only 13 at the moment, but he is heading quickly towards being the kind of person we hear about in the news. He is becoming more violent every day, he has physically attacked his parents, and he destroys their property and home constantly whenever he gets upset. Recently, as the violence increased, they have finally started calling the police when he has an episode. Twice the police have taken him to the psych ward. They send him home after a few hours because there are no beds available. The police won't take him to juvenile hall because he has a physical disability and is small for his age, so they deem him too frail to tolerate juvenile detention.

These people have good health insurance, and are doing everything they can to get him treatment, but there is nothing available. He is on medication and sees a therapist, but there is nothing much else that can be done. And in a year, when he is 14, he can legally refuse to take the medication. So they are trapped, with no options. And this is with a juvenile, who is unquestionably violent, and the people have health insurance. The chances of being able to get treatment for an adult, who is not obviously violent or dangerous, who does not want treatment and has no insurance are almost zero.
