Honestly a better excuse for the gas cans would be for her to just say she wanted to bring extra just in case she got lost driving. Figuring she was driving in the desert (I've never actually been, just speculating), I'd assume gas stations are few and far between. Her story of not wanting to stop is asinine.
Plus its Arizona, so he can get away with it.

Not sure about there, but where I am from, gas cans generally cost about 15-20 dollars. If she could afford mani-pedi's starbucks and a long trip, she could have taken 30-40 and bought her own

There are very few stretches of road on main higways out this way that don't have some wort of rest stop. Unless she pulled off on state roads, which would have been obvious that she was leaving the main highway, she's full of it.

Well, duh (I feel so 1st grade, lol), if the point is you're supposedly filling the cans with cheaper gas to save money, you would put as much "cheap" gas as would fit into the cans you had, right? Common sense.
I've purchased gas cans from Walmart before (for the lawn mower), and I had a car with a wonky fuel gauge (it wouldn't tell you how much was in the tank correctly, until I got the fuel pump replaced) that I purchased another can for about 6 months ago and kept in the car just in case. I paid about 12 dollars for a 5 gallon can. Five years ago, it was probably cheaper. So, 24 bucks in 2012 for 2 gas can. Not exorbitantly expensive, especially for someone who took lots of road trips, as mentioned by others.
However, I would dispute the idea of putting FULL gas cans in a car and driving around with them. Especially in the trunk. Cans do have a lid, but there is a risk of spillage. Whenever I would get gas for the mower I would put the can in a low box on the floor of the front passenger seat.
