EXCLUSIVE: Friend recalls last meeting of Travis Alexander and Jodi Arias in public
GOODYEAR, AZ (CBS5) -
One of Travis Alexander's former co-workers tells CBS 5 News she and her colleagues may have been the last people to see him together with Jodi Arias before his death in June of 2008.
Julie Christopher worked with Pre-Paid Legal Services, now LegalShield, in 2008. Alexander and Arias also worked with that company.
Christopher is not on the state's witness list in the Arias case. Nor was she ever interviewed by Mesa police or Maricopa County prosecutors working the case.
"We should have all gone to Travis and said, 'get rid of her,' you know" said Christopher about Arias. She had worked with Alexander for several years and came to know Arias through him.
She says Arias and Alexander never held hands together or came off as a couple. However, as someone who has spent time around him she knew that they had developed a relationship. She says she never got a good vibe from Arias.
"I remember thinking that girl looks like a zombie," Christopher said. "She was a weird person to be around."
Several weeks before Alexander's death, Christopher, Alexander and Arias attended a business conference in Tempe at the Embassy Suites hotel with close to 200 others.
Following that conference, a smaller group, that included Alexander, Arias and Christopher dined at the restaurant inside the hotel.
"When she was sitting next to me at that event, she goes 'he changed my life, he changed my life. He's so amazing' and then she keeps on taking pictures," Christopher said. "She (Arias) was like, totally obsessed with Travis."
Alexander had told Christopher that he had broken things off with Arias.
"He said, 'no, no. I'm done with her. This is not my girlfriend. This is not the kind of girlfriend I want,'" said Christopher.
Christopher says Arias told her that she knew Travis had broken things off and had intended to move back with her grandparents in Northern California.
"I can't be in Arizona if I'm not his girlfriend," said Arias to Christopher. "She says, 'I'm going back. I love him too much. I can't be with him just being his friend. If I'm not his girlfriend than I can't be around him.'"
Alexander also told Christopher he planned to bring another woman with him on an upcoming work-related getaway to Cancun, Mexico.
It was in Cancun when Christopher got word about Alexander's death.
"I looked at my husband and said, 'It's Jodi.' I just knew it. But not just me. Everybody knew it," said Christopher.
As she watches the trial unfold, she says Arias' description of Alexander is the exact opposite of how he really was.
"The picture she is painting. It's not Travis. It's not possible," she says. "I never saw Travis mad. At any point. Never upset."
"She becomes someone else and she has all this facade. And she plays that role. This is what's so spooky. She believes her lies."
