They summon a large number. They give each person a number sign that will identify you. Then, they go through a number of questions. First one is usually if you are familiar with the case or have seen any media on it - which will instantly disqualify you. Also, if you know anyone involved. If you have any conflicts or if it would be a financial burden to serve on the jury. For long hearings like this, you usually get a lot of unemployed, business owners or retired individuals since most people can't financially handle a 3-4 month period mostly away from work. The attorneys get to ask questions so that they can determine who would be support their angle. Generally each attorney gets to choose their half of the jurors. They will each try to select jurors they think would be supportive of their case.
They often end up having to summon in more people as numbers get narrowed down - especially in a big case like this. I was in jury selection with this same judge and it went on for at least two days (I was released at the end of the first - whew - but they were to report the next day). In the middle of the first day, they brought in additional potential jurors, to add to the numbers. The judge mentioned they would add even more the next day. It can be a VERY long process and I would guess this case took several days or more to pick a jury. Tax dollars at work!!! Sigh...

I cannot handle this fucking bitch. Granted, different people have different triggers and I am kind of a cry baby, but the lack of/inappropriate emotion is hard to comprehend. When other people are hurting, I just lose it.

She is too lax and seems to have little control of her own court room. The trial is half over before she decides to limit the massive bench conferences. Fricken people talking and chewing gum and laughing. Damn there's still a murder victim here, how about a little decorum. Now, she's going aginst the sheriff who has a duty for his own regulation to be followed. Ridiculous.
