A Colorado man whose wife was found deceased in a gruesome scene in the shower has been arrested after claiming she died by suicide.

Lindsey Barnett, 37, was found with her throat slit in her bloodied Lakewood, Colo. home on Thursday, Aug. 13, the Lakewood Police Department said in a statement.

Her husband, 40-year-old Patrick Theodore Barnett, has been arrested in connection with her killing, per the statement.

Patrick called 911 around 6 a.m. Thursday frantically claiming Lindsey had “cut herself and her throat,” according to an arrest affidavit obtained by PEOPLE.
He allegedly told police he was asleep in the basement and came up in the morning to apologize to Lindsey because the two had had a disagreement the night before.

He found her bleeding in the shower, moved her head and called 911, he alleged, per authorities.

The evidence at the scene didn’t substantiate his insinuation that Lindsey killed herself in the shower, however, investigators said in the affidavit.

Officers found a large amount of blood on one side of the bed, plant with dirt knocked over next to the bed and some of the soil that got dragged to the bathroom, the affidavit notes. Police also saw a “dainty” bloody footstep, seemingly that of a female, between the bed and the bathroom.
While the bed was drenched in blood, the bathroom had little blood, police said, adding that blood patterns in the bathroom further indicated Lindsey’s body had been repositioned.

Lindsey’s body also had bruises all over, including on her arms and legs, and some of them appeared to be defensive wounds, the affidavit alleges.

Patrick told investigators Lindsey suffered from postpartum depression — an issue that’s garnered national attention in light of the trial of Lindsay Clancy, who is accused of killing her three children in what her defense claims was a psychotic break she suffered owing to postpartum psychosis.

According to the affidavit, investigators learned Patrick was having an affair with a woman he met online three months ago. The woman called for a wellness check on Patrick on Thursday afternoon because she hadn’t heard from him.

She said Patrick had indicated he and Lindsey were going to get a divorce, that Lindsey had been in a psychiatric unit and that she had attempted suicide just the weekend prior.
