10 dead following Broad Peak valanche in Pakistan on 7/30/2026

At least four people have died, and an American climber and the star of a Netflix documentary are among 10 people missing, following an avalanche on one of the world’s highest mountains.

The avalanche hit Broad Peak in Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan at around 12 p.m. local time on Thursday, July 30, and there has been no communication with the team since.

Mallory Geis, a U.S. national, was part of the expedition, along with six Nepalese nationals and one climber each from China, Pakistan and Oman.
Gilgit-Baltistan Police announced in a statement on Friday, July 31, that four bodies had been recovered as search efforts involving two Pakistan Army helicopters were underway.

However, the Alpine Club of Pakistan reported in a statement that the bodies of Omani national Nadhira Al Harthy and Pur Bahadur Gurung “Yukta” of Nepal had been recovered.

Among the other climbers in the group was expedition leader Nirmal Purja. Purja, a Nepali national, rose to wider prominence when he starred in the 2021 Netflix documentary 14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.
