On Wednesday afternoon, June 24, 19-year-old Marly Kinney of Ashland, Kentucky, went out on a rented pontoon boat at Grayson Lake Marina in Carter County with a group of friends. She did not return with the group.

Her disappearance triggered an exhaustive, five-day search led by game wardens from the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources.

On Sunday, June 28, search teams recovered Kinney's body from Grayson Lake.

While her remains have been sent to the Kentucky Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort for an autopsy, an official cause of death has not yet been publicly released.
The initial missing person report was triggered when the boat's operator, 23-year-old Cameron Conley, informed marina staff on Wednesday that he was unable to locate a female passenger who had been on his watercraft.

A Kentucky State trooper noticed that Conley had bloodshot, glassy eyes and smelled of alcohol. Conley admitted to drinking while operating the boat. A subsequent preliminary breathalyzer test revealed his blood alcohol content (BAC) was 0.137%.

He was booked into the Carter County Detention Center, released the same day, and is scheduled for arraignment in July.

While an arrest has been made regarding the operation of the vessel, the broader investigation into the exact circumstances leading up to Kinney's death remains open.
