She obviously loved him and put a ton of work into taking care of him if he was in such good condition on the surface that most people didn't know.
Very sad that the one dog went for a vet procedure and then was likely resting in the cage due to that and couldn't get out.
I lived out near the border of NM at that time and people were freaking out about the hantavirus in the 90's. This was back during the time when Ebola was always in the news and there were several best sellers about deadly viruses, and TV/movies about them. Overall it's very rare even for people in the environment with rodents, but it was scary.

The weird thing is, he didnt show signs of dehydration?
From Marsh's post: "Hackman was likely home with his deceased wife for one week before he died, Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza said. There was no food in his stomach, which means he had not eaten recently, but he had also no evidence of dehydration, officials said."
Gene Hackman's will has been unveiled and the two-time Oscar-winner left every penny of his fortune to his wife, Betsy Arakawa.
His three children, son Christopher and two daughters Leslie and Elizabeth, are not named in the will.
Betsy's will leaves most of her assets to Gene, but there's a provision which says if they died within 90 days of each other, it would be considered a simultaneous death, and in that case, her will provides all of her assets would go to charity.
New Mexico is a community property state, so assuming there's no prenup, Betsy's estate could have a lot of money and her share would go to charity.https://www.tmz.com/2025/03/14/gene-...tate-children/As for Gene's estate, despite the fact he did not include his children in his will, they would presumably get his share since they are the most direct living heirs.
Andrew M. Katzenstein, a prominent California trust and estate attorney, has reportedly been hired by Gene's son Chris, indicating he may challenge the will.
Hackman discussed his difficult relationship with his children over the years, admitting he wasn't around much during Chris' formative years. He had gotten closer to his kids in more recent years.
All you have to do is state what you want to happen in your will if the primary beneficiary were to die simultaneously...it's not hard and anyone that doesn't get legal advice on providing for a contingent beneficiary has a bad lawyer and is kind of ignorant. Spell out exactly what you want to happen in your will, don't leave it up to interpretation. It sounds like Gene ONLY put a primary beneficiary and that's why there's some ground for someone to fight..if you name a primary and contingent most valid and legal wills are pretty contest proof. The idea that people can easily fight and overturn a valid and legal will with a primary and contingent beneficiary is a myth.

"Preliminary cell phone records revealed Gene Hackman's wife, Betsy Arakawa Hackman, did not die on Feb. 11, as once believed, according to the Santa Fe Sheriff's Department.
Betsy's autopsy determined the manner of death as natural, and authorities previously believed she died on or about Feb. 11. Toxicology results remain pending."
""We can now confirm that Mrs. Hackman’s phone was utilized on the morning of February 12 to call a medical center in Santa Fe, Cloudberry Health.
"A total of three calls were made that morning, all to the medical center. One incoming call was made to Mrs. Hackman from the same medical center that afternoon. That appeared as a missed call on Mrs. Hackman’s cell phone."

New details were released about the death of one of Gene Hackman and wife Betsy Arakawa's dogs, whose body was found in their Santa Fe home, along with the deceased couple, in late February.
The dog, Zinfandel (nicknamed Zinna), likely died from dehydration and starvation, according to a necropsy report obtained by the Associated Press and ABC News on Friday. The AP cites the New Mexico Department of Agriculture’s Veterinary Diagnostic Services as the source of the report, while ABC News sourced the report from Santa Fe Animal Control. The 12-year-old Australian Kelpie mix's stomach was mostly empty, with the exception of "small amounts of hair and bile," the news outlets reported. The report also said there was no evidence of infectious disease, trauma or poisoning, per the AP and ABC News.
A date of the dog's death was not reported, but outlets stated the autopsy showed "partial mummification" and "severe decomposition."
