A pressurized oxygen chamber exploded Friday, killing a 5-year-old patient and injuring his mother at a suburban Detroit medical facility.

The hyperbaric chamber explosion occurred about 8 a.m. at the Oxford Center in Troy, north of Detroit.

The child, from Royal Oak, Michigan, had been inside the machine and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Those things freak me out. In school we had to go visit one for an afternoon and I always worried about their safety...particularly the damage that can occur to the human body.

A variety of reasons from burns to CO2 poisoning. It is essentially a chamber where the body is exposed to high-pressured, pure oxygen.

We used to have one in the building I did accounting in and I was always a little scared of it. Ang, some of them are used for people who get the bends from diving but a lot of times they are used to get wounds to heal faster. Some people believe that they can help/cure autism and I think this is what was going on here. https://www.nationalhyperbaric.com/h...ditions/autism

The 5-year-old boy who died after a hyperbaric chamber exploded has been identified.

Lawyers representing the child’s family have identified the victim killed in the explosion as Thomas Cooper, according to the Detroit Free Press and CBS affiliate WWJ-TV.

I am questioning why they need 65k for his funeral.

Ah got it, thanks. For some reason I thought they were used for migraines.

I dont see how it could help autism.

Holy crap 65k. And they are almost at their goal. I would imagine they will get a pretty penny by suing as well.

Holy shit, one person donated 10k

It does matter about the money. It wont bring the kid back. I know everyone knows that, but losing a kid leaves a hole nothing can fill.

There's a boy I used to follow that had a TBI that used one to help with that.

Although it's terrible and I know funeral expenses can be high, but they've now raised it to 75K. It's not like the kid was the bread winner of the family and now they are left without an income. I'm not one to usually point out people that capitalize on the death of a family member, but it's hard for me to believe that they aren't doing that in this case.

Did not see this coming; the parents can also sue in civil court if negligence occurred.

Three people have been charged with second-degree murder after a 5-year-old boy was killed when a hyperbaric chamber exploded at a medical facility in Michigan earlier this year, officials announced Tuesday.

Safety protocols from the National Fire Protection Association and the manufacturer of the hyperbaric chamber were "completely disregarded" at the time of the boy's death, according to Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel.

"Due to many failures by men and women who would call themselves medical professionals, and wanton or willful disregard for the likelihood that their actions would cause the death of a patient, 5-year-old Thomas Cooper was killed," Nessel said.
The owner of the Oxford Center, 58-year-old Tamela Peterson, and two other employees of the facility -- safety manager Jeffrey Mosteller, 64, and Gary Marken, 65, the primary management assistant -- have now been charged with second-degree murder in connection with his death.

They also face an alternative charge of involuntary manslaughter. Nessel said a jury will ultimately decide if the state has enough evidence to prove the murder charge.

Nessel said they are confident the second-degree murder charge, which could potentially lead to a life sentence, is appropriate.

    And there is more.

Disturbing details emerged about the CEO and founder of the Oxford Center in Troy at her arraignment Tuesday for a hyperbaric chamber explosion that killed a 5-year-old boy.

Tamela Peterson is charged with second-degree murder and was given a $2 million bond after being described as flight risk with reported incidents of interfering with the investigation.

Kessel was concerned about Peterson being a flight risk, due to her having plenty of cash on hand from her business - offering non-traditional health treatments like the chamber for Cooper's sleep apnea that were not covered by insurance.

Peterson has a China Visa, and recently purchased an amount of uncirculated Iraqi currency, he said, adding she has ties to people out of the state and country.
Among the claims made about Peterson's interference into the case:

*Peterson allegedly ‘wiped her laptop' to dispose of potential evidence.
*Peterson is accused of overseeing the tampering of the hyperbaric chamber to "turn back" the number of cycles it had been used for.
*Peterson allegedly lied to investigators to prevent access to video of chamber's explosion in the case.
*Peterson allegedly ran from detectives when they asked for her to hand over her phone.

I read somewhere that they were "treating" this poor kid for sleep apnea and ADHD. With this chamber?! Shady fuckers. Anything for money.

Is it something you need a special license for? I would assume so.
