Tyler Sabapathy (18) fell off a light pole while celebrating the Philidelphia Eagle's NFC championship game win

An 18-year-old man who was celebrating the Philadelphia Eagles victory over the Washington Commanders in the NFC championship game on Sunday has died after he fell from a light pole during the celebrations, officials said.

Temple University announced the death of first-year student Tyler Sabapathy, 18, who sustained critical injuries over the weekend and died on Tuesday.

The tragedy happened Sunday night at 15th and Market streets in Center City Philadelphia where video shows the teen above on the street pole before he fell onto the concrete sidewalk flat on his back, hitting his head, according to ABC News’ Philadelphia station WPVI.

He was taken to Jefferson Hospital with a brain injury and pronounced dead two days later.

Sabapathy was a Toronto native and accomplished gymnast with over 120 medals, was majoring in exercise and sport science at Temple’s College of Public Health, school administrators said. He was also a dedicated member of the university’s club gymnastics team.
Is it bad that I feel like as a gymnast he should have stuck the landing better???

That is sad. I wonder if alcohol was involved? He was so young.

@RBW, I'm going to hell along with you because that was my first thought

I hate to say it, but this is a definite Darwin Award situation. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. It's a shame because it sounds like he had a bright future in front of him.

    Dear Kids,
YOU ARE NOT INDESTRUCTIBLE. You can and will die doing stupid shit so don't do it.

Part of me is like, well he got what he deserved doing something dumb. But then I think back at that age, I did some dumbass things, too. Not realizing something bad COULD happen to me or not thinking things through. I would probably have less sympathy for someone who did this that was like, 35.

I agree with you, Nic. When we are young, we do stupid things because we feel invincible. He did a stupid thing, but he was only 18. That's sad.

@Boston, ok, you made me feel better because I felt like everyone else was judging me. I'm not saying he deserved anything, but I do think the manner is kind of ironic for a gymnast.

I'm not judging you at all. I wish I was as clever to think of that first thing.

I felt bad when no one said anything, like I was being an ass...but that is literally where my mind went as soon as I read he was a gymnast. My smart-ass mind, it's my blessing and my curse.

Yeah, I don't even bother 99% of the time because I suck at it. I just assume you will do it for us, lol.
