WOW I dont know how someone could survive that.

The video brings up bad memories of when my moms aunt and uncle crashed and died. They played the video on a loop on the news. It went up in a fire ball like that. No survivors.

I read they were crew members (FA's most likely) in the tail section, so probably seated on the aft jumpseat. The tail section was the most recognizable after the crash.

Did bird strike contribute to South Korea plane crash? What we know so far

The Jeju Air plane came off the runway before colliding with a wall at Muan International Airport in the south west of the country.

The plane, which was returning from Bangkok, in Thailand, was carrying 181 people - 179 of whom have died, while two crew members were rescued from the wreckage.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash, which fire officials have indicated may have occurred due to a bird strike and bad weather. However experts have warned the crash could have been caused by a number of factors.
A South Korean transport official said that the plane had been attempting to land but was forced to hold off after air traffic control gave a bird strike warning - an alert about the risk of a collision with birds.

About two minutes later, the pilot called in a Mayday and air traffic command gave permission for the plane to land from the opposite direction, the official said.

One video appears to show the plane touching down without using its wheels or any other landing gear. It skidded down the runway and crashed into a wall before erupting into flames.

A witness told the South Korean news agency Yonhap that they heard a "loud bang" followed by a "series of explosions".

Videos from the scene show the plane ablaze with smoke billowing into the sky. Fire crews have since extinguished the fire.

Lee Jeong-hyun, the chief of the Muan fire department, told a televised briefing that the tail section of the plane was identifiable but "one cannot recognise the shape of the rest of the plane".
One passenger on the flight messaged a relative, saying that a bird "was stuck in the wing" and that the plane could not land, local media reported.

Officials, however, have not confirmed whether the plane did actually collide with any birds.
Hubby theorized that IF it was a birdstrike that it may have damaged the spoilers because he says they were coming in a lot faster than they would have on a landing approach and the spoilers are used to slow the plane down, and they are on the wing.

@RBW I watched a Youtube video breaking down the crash by a pilot of that same model and he mentioned that he could tell that the spoilers were not active at the time of the crash. He could see it in the slowed down video of the approach. He mentioned that there was also a manual way to do this if the hydraulics were out, but couldn't understand why they didn't resort to the manual levers. If the spoilers were somehow damaged, this would explain it. You can tell that they had absolutely no braking from no landing gear and no other way to slow down.

People have complained that the concrete wall shouldn't have been at the end of the runway, but that's exactly why it's there. The plane would have continued on to two other roadways, a neighborhood and a freeway if it hadn't stopped them. I can understand trying to protect the surrounding public even though it's sad to lose all of those people.

I saw the video of the engine going "Poof" up in the air on approach so my guess is also birdstrike. It's terrifying

RBW I forgot about the jump seats, they do seem more insulated.

Im a dummy when it comes to planes, I assumed the bird was sucked into the engine. What are spoilers and do you need them to fly?

It makes sense they crashed if they couldnt slow down.

Still confused about the sound of the explosions heard.

Ok googled it, and still dont know how they brought the plane down, you will have to explain it to me like im 5.

I don't know much about planes and what I read online confused me so thank you, all of you, for the explanations.

Ang, the explosion is probably what they call a compressor stall. If something (say a bird being sucked in or a broken fan blade) interrupts the flow of air over the fan blades it causes this, it's almost like a backfire on a car but really amplified because the engine is so much more powerful.

The flaps and the slats are parts of the wing that can be moved to different settings. By interrupting the flow of air it affects the lift of the wing and can help either with taking off or landing. If they didn't work for some reason, then the pilots wouldn't be able to use them to slow down the approach.

There is definitely a way to bring the gear down if the hydraulics fail. I have watched videos and I see no gear on the first landing attempt or the final landing after the go-around.

The two flight attendants who survived the crash were found in the tail end of the plane, the most intact part of the wreckage.

One was a 33-year-old man, with the surname Lee, who was rushed to a hospital in Mokpo, about 25km (15.5 mi) south of the airport, but was later transferred to Ewha Womans University Seoul Hospital in the capital, Yonhap news agency reported.

"When I woke up, I had already been rescued," he told doctors at the hospital, according to its director Ju Woong, who spoke during a press briefing.

The survivor, who suffered multiple fractures, is receiving special care due to the risk of after-effects, including total paralysis, Ju said.

The other survivor, a 25-year-old female flight attendant with the surname Koo, is being treated at Asan Medical Center in eastern Seoul, Yonhap added.

She has sustained head and ankle injuries but is reportedly in a stable condition.

The two black boxes on the Boeing jet involved in the worst aviation disaster on South Korean soil stopped recording about four minutes before the accident, the transport ministry said on Saturday.

South Korean investigators previously said the flight data and cockpit voice recorders were key to finding out the cause of last month's crash that killed 179 people.

It happened about four minutes after the pilot of the airliner operated by Jeju Air (089590.KS)

Authorities investigating the crash plan to analyse what caused the black boxes to stop recording, the ministry said in a statement.
The voice recorder was initially analysed in South Korea, and, when data was found to be missing, sent to a U.S. National Transportation Safety Board laboratory, the ministry said.

You can't turn it off, but you can pull a breaker. It has to be that way in case they caught fire.

Duck DNA in both engines of Jeju Air plane that crashed, report says

Both engines of the Jeju Air plane that crashed last month contained duck remains, according to a preliminary report on Monday, with authorities still trying to determine what caused the deadliest air disaster on South Korean soil.

Although it is rare for such preliminary reports to go beyond factual details, the report gave no indication about what might have led the aircraft to land far down the runway without its landing gear deployed, highlighting the lack of immediate clues after the plane's black boxes stopped recording four minutes before impact.
    https://www.independent.co.uk/travel...-b2694030.html

All airports in South Korea have been ordered to install bird detection cameras and thermal imaging radars following the Jeju Air crash in December.
A preliminary investigation released last month confirmed that bird strikes played a role in the fatal crash, with feathers and blood stains from Baikal teals, a migratory duck species, found in both engines of the Boeing 737-800.

Bird strikes scare the living shit out of me. I wish there were a way to protect the engines from them somehow. It's hard for me to believe that with today's technology that they can't come up with some sensible solution to prevent these things from happening. Birds are not going to stop birding so it's up to us to figure something out.

I *think* they can safely shut off the engine with a bird strike, but im not sure.

How high? Do you not realize that planes take off and land on ground level and have to fly through all altitude levels to get up to their cruising height?

Birds hit planes all the time. When they get sucked into the engine the engine is done. Sometimes it will just catch fire and they can shut it off and land. Sometimes it explodes/comes apart and further damages the plane.

It sounds like the first engine was damaged in a bird strike and when they tried to go around they may have sucked another bird into the other engine, but that's just my opinion.

When I worked as an accountant for an airport we would buy 'bird bang', which is like ammunition that is a blank, and there was a machine that would shoot it off to try to keep the birds away from the airport. Low level flight into and out of airports is where the real danger is...like Sully. This kind of stuff is in the media at all times. I don't understand how this wouldn't be common knowledge.

I forgot this occured in the landing phase. I meant when the plane is at a high altitude, I didnt think ducks specifically flew that high.

They don't. I don't understand why that isn't getting through. Bird strikes happen as planes are taking off or getting ready to land.
